As Above, So Below

This movie is about a search for the philosopher's stone and the horrors they face trying to get it.

The movie is shot in a found footage style manner with multiple camera perspective. These types of movies always have that introductory period where characters are introduced and are seen just going about their lives etc and almost always it's boring. This movie however did it in a different manner, using the plot to turn that period into a clue hunt of sorts, and it was interesting.

As most of the movie takes place underground, it had a nice dosage of claustrophobic feeling. Some scenes amplified the effect and were pretty tense. The horror aspect was wasn't that profound though. There were maybe a scene or two that actually gave me the creeps. I did, however, loved how it dealt with hell, was just refreshing and great to something different like this on a very common thing.

Perdita weeks, who acted as the main lead and the one who was after the philosopher's stone, was pretty good. I liked her, and it helped that she looks great. The main dude, who acted as the language expert and the love interest, was also nice. The rest of the cast was OK. In movie like these, you never care for the secondary cast as you know they're just there to be used for deaths.

The movie felt really interesting from the start and it kept that momentum until the final act, which sadly just kinda fell apart and felt too rushed. If they have kept it together here, this movie would have been a good watch overall. Also, there were some jump scares, surprise surprise, which just felt too lazy. I saw them coming a mile away. Stuff like this just ruins the creepy build up and atmosphere.

6.8/10

Ant-Man: The movie turned out to be a whole lot of fun. The humour worked PHENOMENALLY well and some of the characters in the film are truly hilarious. Plenty of references to the larger marvel cinematic universe. The plot was largely shallow and generic but the fight sequences were really unique thanks to the shrinking element; those scenes really were spectacular. Really had a blast with this film. 8/10

Yep, a nice movie but the footage style... Arrghhhh
Hate every movie that followed the suit of Blair witch. The viewer is there to see so at least they showed show what they intend to. be that anything ;)

Jurassic World (2015)

"Don't worry. It's gonna be just like taking a walk in the woods... 65 million years ago."

Just came back from watching Jurassic World and it was certainly a different beast from the original. It set itself up more as a heart stopping thriller than anything else, and granted, it managed do that exceptionally well. This made the story highly predictable, however. If you'e planning on going to see this, the proper mindset would be to go see giant dinosaurs wreck shit, not to experience a masterpiece in story telling.

The action itself was pretty thrilling when it got going and thankfully there was lot of it. But even so, every now and then you had the occasional scene or two reminding you that this movie did indeed have a story. Personally, I found it pretty intrusive compared to the rest of the movie. Like every over-the-top action thriller, it had the sense of urgency mixed in with some comic relief in the form of a cheesy one-liner. The latter feeling a wee bit too much, but like I said, you have to kind of shut your mind off and enjoy it for it is, a spectacle.

There were a few in-between scenes that were handled pretty well. Like:
Spoiler: show
The call back to the park from the original movie.

Spoiler: show
The introduction to the water dino

Spoiler: show
Basically every scene with the Velociraptor

And
Spoiler: show
That heartwarming scene with the Brachiosaurus. It had me swept up enough to not notice that I spilled some of my popcorn. :p

Casting choices were okay, some better than others, none that raised the bar. Chris Pratt definitely deserved the lead role, I can't imagine a serious actor faring too well for what this movie was trying to achieve. He managed to strike a balance between outlandish funny guy and cliched heroic badass. Can't offer the same level of praise for the female lead, though. Irfan Khan acting as the go to Indian guy for the umpteenth time was nice too. :tv:

Music was passable. Some of it was remixed from the old movie, some of it was new. Didn't really find it as hitting as the original movie.

Overall, I'd say you get your share of kicks for the price of admission. It doesn't draw on Speilberg's movie, it modernizes it, and that's to be expected. But hey, it was better than Godzilla, so there's that.

Jester, I just watched it a day or two ago (will post my review soon) and completely agree with you, except for better than Godzilla part. :p

Anyway, I can see why it is making shit tons of money. It is just a very entertaining and thrilling movie even with its issues. If there was a cinema nearby, I would have probably went there several times to watch it.

Spoiler: show
DAT FINAL FIGHT THO!! The Jurassic Fan in me screamed when T-REX appeared. And when both T-REX and Raptor teamed. SO MUCH WIN!!

Godzilla just didn't do the franchise justice. It felt like they kinda missed the point of the older movies. A lot of the fans (me included) expected a movie about a giant behemoth terrorizing a city or fighting a memorable antagonist. What we got was a movie that tried to be a little too serious for it's own good. Godzilla barely gets about 20 mins of actual screen time while the rest is spent on side plots and exposition. The other monster was just a Mothra clone that was somehow worse. And the while the cast had some really well known actors, they didn't really have much to work with and you ended up getting paper thin characters. The movie was a total flop for me.

I'd suggest you still try to catch it on the big screen if you can. Hearing those dino roars on full blast was a sizable chunk of the experience. :p

Spoiler: show
Yep, and water dino coming out of nowhere and dealing the finishing blow. Ignoramus got rekd :yerli:

To me, the tone felt great, the cinematography was utterly BEAUTIFUL, and the tension/anticipation was meticulously crafted. Sure I would have loved to see more of Godzilla, but the short screen time really didn't bothered me. Also, I knew Godzilla will be fighting an enemy and they way they handled him was different from my expectations but I kinda liked it, and the MUTOs were great in my opinion. Big bugs that needed to be squashed. :p

Spoiler: show
I was hugely disappointed when Bryan Cranston character died early on though since he was the best in the movie.

The characters could have definitely been better, I agree. But after re-watching the movie three times, they don't really bother me that much now. :p

I so wanted to watch it in a cinema, but Exams and ramazan came in the way. If only I lived in Islamabad/Lahore/Karachi.
If it is in cinemas after Eid, I'll definitely try to watch it. Have to go for Mission Impossible 5 anyway.
