Selma
"Our lives are not fully lived if we're not willing to die for those we love, for what we believe."
Directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Paul Webb, Selma is an epic story of Martin Luther King's reltentless campaigning to have equal voting rights.
I should not have ignored this movie but I kind of got carried away. I have noticed how a lot of people compared this with 12 Years a Slave and how the former won the Oscar and this couldn't. Let me get this straight; the topic discussed in 12 Years a Slave was something that wasn't exposed before, we had never heard of Solomon Northup but we all know about Martin Luther King and his endeavours. Now that the point has been abolished, let's move on to the movie itself.
The movie stars David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King and to be very honest, he does a wonderful job in portraying King. Other big names include Oprah Winfrey, Tom Wilkinson, Giovanni Ribisy, Martin Sheen and Tim Roth (powerful, memorable but a short lived role as George Wallace)
I loved the direction but it kind of lacked some final touches; nothing that can't be forgiven. Acting was obviously subpar, the cinematography was on point and my favourite aspect was how good the background music was. Selma is an genius movie that could have been flawless had there been some technical improvements but don't let that keep you away from how good it gets.
