Pakistani Activists Smell A Mole In Government’s Proposed YouTube Filtering Plan

After ignoring repeated requests to appear in a court case challenging the Pakistan government’s year-long YouTube blackout, the country’s elusive IT minister is expected to appear at a hearing later this month to outline plans to drop the blanket ban — and instead selectively restrict “blasphemous” and “offensive” material on the video-sharing site. However, activists have decried the move as a Trojan Filter that will precipitate a far-reaching Internet surveillance regime.

Specially when TV channels can show all kinds of violent and gruesome scenes in the name of Freedom of Speech.

The real problem lies in non-technical people being appointed at posts directly interfering with technical infrastructure of the country. Even if they implement such a filter, can you imagine how destructive that move would be when whole country's traffic will have to go through that bottleneck.

There will be work around, There will still be same content available else where. What's more shameful is even if they would have initiated a corporate level treaty with google as other countries do, Google could do that from there end, but no, we always have to do stuff in typical twisted Pakistani way. This is why we are behind the world and still considered as Jahil nation.

I'm at work so Youtube was never blocked for us...


I'm sure it wont work for me at home - I'm on PTCL... it seems they've got the most disgusting illiterate molvis working for them cuz they never unblocked youtube... even for that one day when gov. announced an unblock...

I'd like to see if anyone is lucky to have the service restored?

Dont really understand this.... youtube is just a tool like anything else.. it can be used to spread knowledge or hate...

Just like a pencil... you can write just as many hateful or blasphemous things with a pencil... or just as many inspirational and teaching things..

But you dont ban all pencils lol...

same goes with the positive and negative aspect of nearly every tool.

^ Yep, Point. I have learned so much from YouTube that i actually developed a respect for it. I learned my way around my bike'e engine. I repaired my Keyboards & Mouse. Many DIY (Do It Yourself) tutorials. Even preparing dishes.

So far banning of YouTube was nothing more than a political decision and i am not sure if they are ever going to open it up.

Just like a pencil... you can write just as many hateful or blasphemous things with a pencil... or just as many inspirational and teaching things..

I like the analogy but I won't say its a tool like a pencil but rather its more like a library. The camera would be a tool.

Eitherway - it is like banning a library because it carries one book kept somewhere within the depths of its billion or so book collection.

I'm seeing a very wrong trend occurring in PK with Maulvinization. I am seeing a lot people now going way off into the 'religious' mode not knowing how wrongly they are interpreting Islam. These people believe it is ok to hurt others in the name of Allah (SWT). They believe the world (west) is out to get them and they have to fend for themselves. They create chaos and disorder and shove their opinion down ur throat (by blocking websites etc). And to them, all of this is normal and OK. Yet they have no idea that the Prophet (SAW) promoted education and knowledge. They have no idea that HUMANITY is what Islam is all about. They do not understand that PEACE is what they should be promoting.

I had one molvi convert correct me when I said Humanity First. He said, Allah first, then humanity. I was baffled... You do Humanity for Allah. Since Humans are Allah's creation and you should love and cherish everything He has created... Love for All, Hatred for None.

All of these molvis create chaos just to show that they Love the prophet more than the others, they have the highest love for Allah. The question is, does Allah and Prophet love what you are doing to others? Do they love how you show your love for them?

Seriously these molvis are fuckin our country over!... Enough for my rant! I can go all day lol!

Yes there's some news. The IT minister of Pakistan has announced that YouTube will soon be localized, i.e. a YouTube.com.pk site will be created. That would be under control of the Pakistan government probably.
