‘Batman vs. Superman’ Casting Rumors – Who Could Play an Older Batman?

It’s still hard to believe, comic book fans: not only will Man of Steel 2 include a brand new Batman, but screenwriter David S. Goyer let it slip that the dark knight and Superman will meet as opponents, not partners. While that announcement may have guaranteed Warner Bros. as much, if not more anticipation and buzz for their sequel than they enjoyed with Man of Steel, it also opened the door to brand new rumors and gossip surrounding potential casting.

Since the cat was let out of the bag, word has arrived that director Zack Snyder and Goyer are not looking to ‘reboot’ Batman in the traditional sense, but want to cast an older, more experienced Bruce Wayne to counter Cavill’s Kent. It was only a matter of time before rumors of a shortlist surfaced, with names now ranging from downright ridiculous to… fairly believable.

The early list of names being circulated around the studio comes courtesy of THR, although the sources themselves claim that Snyder is a long way from beginning the casting process. But the call for an aging Batman has apparently already brought Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad) to the forefront – among others.

While Brolin’s career has certainly seen a surge of activity in recent years, it seems highly unlikely for Snyder to cast a Batman who is only a few years younger than his on-screen Super-father, Russell Crowe. However, even if Snyder may be looking for a Batman close to forty, an actor pushing fifty is a long shot (even if Brolin’s Bruce Wayne being introduced to Diane Lane’s ‘Martha Kent’ would be interesting for… several reasons).

Unfortunately, most of the names tossed out (admittedly nothing more than rumors at this point) easily fall into the ‘too famous,’ ‘too unproven,’ or ‘been there done that’ categories. Whether it’s Joe Manganiello (who previously pursued a role as Superman and remains hopeful for Batman), Matthew Goode (who worked with Snyder on Watchmen) or Max Martini (most recently seen as part of a father-son team in Pacific Rim), the rumored actors fail to grab our attention; not only are their resumes somewhat sparse, they’re unsurprising.

Taking a quick look at the trend in superhero casting – Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and now Chris Pratt on the Marvel side, Henry Cavill for Warner Bros. – implies that studios aren’t just after actors who won’t break the bank for lengthy contracts, and directors are after leading men who aren’t well-known to North American audiences. In other words, not Ryan Gosling, who fails to fit any of the criteria for the new Dark Knight (older, rougher) yet continues to crop up in any fan discussion.

Yet in today’s film industry, casting an iconic hero like Batman seems to go against the studio’s usual rules to follow for building a blockbuster. He lacks star power to attract an audience? That’s fine, he’s playing Batman, in a Superman movie. Not in fighting shape? We’ll have him hit the gym and be unrecognizable.

All the director needs is an actor who sells the part, and while finding a proven-yet-unknown actor who passed his ‘heartthrob years’ long ago may be a challenge, a few can certainly be found (if not in America, then abroad).

It’s no surprise, then, to see our top pick for the next Batman Richard Armitage among those being discussed. As a seasoned British actor with his size and relative anonymity among American audiences (and currently sitting at the age of 41), he’s one name we’d list among real contenders. He’s currently in the process of turning heads as Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit Trilogy; next seen in The Desolation of Smaug (2013) alongside yet another of our Batman contenders, Luke Evans.

Having recently been signed to star in the upcoming reboot of The Crow, both Evans and Armitage are talented leading men who are not only being turned to as cornerstones of movie franchises, but remain relatively unknown to mass audiences. Both are young and physcially fit enough to pull off action convincingly, with the looks to make both the slick Bruce Wayne and grizzled Batman seem believable.

That being said, it’s unclear whether size and muscle mass is required to sell Batman as the deadly protector of Gotham City. While Brolin and other aging actors may be able to throw a strong punch, Man of Steel proved that a hero who relies solely on strength may not captivate audiences in an extended fight sequence. Perhaps a thinner, leaner, faster martial artist would be more faithful to the Batman mythology than someone who’s simply ‘big.’

Since Batman’s strength is dwarfed next to the likes of Henry Cavill’s Superman, wouldn’t it be better to cast an actor who was noticably smaller than Cavill? These are all questions that Snyder, Goyer and executive producer Christopher Nolan will have to ask themselves, but with a script still a long way from being completed, it is far too soon for any actor – let alone some of the most famous stars in the world – to have an inside track.

We’ll keep you updated as the production progresses, but for now, we’d recommend every casting detail be taken with a grain of salt. At least until Snyder and Goyer know what the movie will be about, if nothing else.
Shitty List apart From Mathew Goode who would be excellent , he was also in list for super man , i think he deserves a shot he could be mean and tough ,ozymandis he played in watchmen he looked superhero material

‘Superman vs. Batman’ Rumor: Mark Strong or Bryan Cranston as Lex Luthor?

The topic of the Batman vs. Superman sequel to Man of Steel is heating up something fierce. While we’ve been discussing fanboy goodies like reasons why a Superman/Batman movie can be a hit or what comic books to draw from, other websites have been digging for any scoops they can related to the film, resulting in some conflicting casting rumors that are (in our humble opinion) good either way, no matter what turns out to be true.

We’ve already discussed why a Clark Kent/Bruce Wayne/Lex Luthor setup is best for Man of Steel 2, and even actor choices to play a mature Bruce/Batman – but what about Luthor? Which actors are suited to portraying Superman’s archenemies, a serpentine businessman who is also the greatest criminal mind of his time?

According to El Mayimbe at Latino-Review – via some not-so-subtle Twitter hints - Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston is the man Warner Bros. is looking at to play the new Lex Luthor:

elmayimbe @elmayimbe Actor for Lex is so painfully obvious/on the nose, u wouldn't believe me even if I told you. Hell, I don't believe it myself. Take a guess?

However, Digital Spy has a conflicting report (actually, it’s not so much a report as an interview) in which they spoke to Kick-Ass and Green Lantern star Mark Strong about rumors that he has been approached to play Luthor in the next Superman film. Strong’s response to the query was a bit too cryptic to be ignored: ”All I can say is… watch this space.”

From a credibility standpoint, either actor is a believable enough choice. As Mayimbe stated, Cranston is = finishing up a chapter of his career with the final episodes of Breaking Bad, and could indeed be looking for that big franchise payday as reward for his years of hustling in the industry. Meanwhile, Strong is one of the, well, strongest character actors working today – not to mention, he has a relationship with DC/WB, having played a major supporting role in their Green Lantern tentpole.

The downsides? Well, Cranston will be nearly sixty by the time Batman vs. Superman is released, and having seen him go bald for major stretches of Breaking Bad, the man certainly looks his age (read: too old, arguably, to stand against Henry Cavill – even if Cavill will be standing next to a somewhat older Batman). Strong (at age 50) is no spring chicken, either, but it’s hard to debate that something in his Austrian/Italian genes is preserving him well: he looks like he would be a better Lex to stand against Cavill’s Superman and an older Batman.

Sure, Strong has already been cast as a major DC Universe character (Sinestro in Green Lantern), but A) He was under enough makeup that the casual moviegoer likely didn’t recognize him, and B) DC/WB currently seems intent on ignoring Green Lantern’s existence in the universe they are building. Taking those points into account, a Mark Strong DC movie double-dip shouldn’t be that much of a problem. Plus, Sherlock Holmes (another WB tentpole) proved that Strong is more than solid as a diabolical criminal genius; taking on an icon like Lex would be no problem for an actor of his caliber. Cranston on the other hand, can get a little hammy in his film roles (sorry, I said it).
Provided that even ONE of these options is true – who would YOU rather see play Lex Luthor?

Personally i'd say mark strong ! but i think its going to be bryan cranston for all those above twitter comments

According to a new eBook called Beyond Batman: The Unauthorized True Story of Christian Bale and His Dark Knight Dilemma by Vince Russel, Bale may put on the cape one more time for Man of Steel 2.

Bale was allegedly offered $50 million to play Batman again, according to the Beyond Batman publisher. Bale has not commented on this claim, nor have any studio executives at Warner Bros., but if it is true, the offer may be too much to refuse.

Bryan Cranston Wants To Play Lex Luthor In Batman Superman Man of Steel 2

Bryan Cranston achieved super stardom portraying Walter White in the hit TV series Breaking Bad, and now the actor says he is interested in tackling Lex Luthor for Zack Snyder's Superman/Batman movie, sequel to Man of Steel. "Give me a call,” he said, with Metro adding it was with a grin. “I like Lex Luthor. I think he’s misunderstood. He’s a loveable, sweet man,” Cranston offered. Cranston plays a chemistry teacher sticken by cancer turned crystal meth maker and cartel boss known as "Heisenberg" in a role that sees the character undergo extreme transformation from a loving husband and father to a major player in the drug scene due to his ability to create a pure form of the drug coupled with a keen intellect. During previous seasons of Breaking Bad, many fans have pointed out that Cranston's Walter White mirrors Lex Luthor with his shear ruthlessness and cunning smarts. Actually in an episode, Walter White is even described as looking like Lex (video below). Bryan Cranston also has a starring role in the upcoming Godzilla 2014 movie where he plays another super smart character in the form of a scientist. Mark Strong is also rumored for the role of Lex Luthor in Man of Steel 2, and a former Lex has expressed interest as well with Michael Rosenbaum. Superman/Batman, the sequel to Man of Steel, goes into production next year for a 2015 release starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

Exclusive: Christopher Nolan Recommends Wes Bentley For New Batman; Jake Gyllenhaal, Luke Evans, Ben Affleck Contenders

DC Entertainment source has provided the following list of names that are said to be offered screen tests for the new Batman alongside Superman Henry Cavill. We're told one of the spare Dark Knight Trilogy Batman suits will probably be used for the screen test. The source gave us an update in regards to Tyler Hoechlin in that it looks like production feels he is too young for the role and won't be getting a screen test. Wes Bentley, Jake Gyllenhaal, Luke Evans, and Ben Affleck are the names provided. Wes Bentley is said to be Christopher Nolan's recommendation. Bentley has a prominent role in Nolan's Interstellar, which is currently in production. David Goyer is said to be a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, with it previously said Gyllenhaal was Goyer's pick for the Dark Knight in Batman Begins. Luke Evans is an up-and-coming actor who starred alongside Cavill in Immortals, had roles in The Hobbit, Clash of the Titans, Fast and Furious 6, and has landed the lead role in the new Dracula movie. Affleck, we are told, may decline, but WB is still asking. There was also a previous rumor about Scott Adkins trying out for the new Batman role, but our source says Adkins definitely hasn't screen tested because auditions have yet to take place. It could be that Adkins auditioned for the stunt double or fight choreographer. The actual Batman auditions look to begin in September with an announcement not coming until mid-September/October. Our source recently filled us in that Mark Strong was up for the role of Lex Luthor, which the actor seemed to confirm as well as some scenes and info from the Man of Steel. Regarding the source's Justice League movie news, that is said to have been in the plans, but Warner Bros. decided to go with a Batman/Superman movie. It's said Zack Snyder wanted a stand alone Man of Steel sequel leading to Justice League, but Snyder recenty stated he has to go the route WB wants him to. Other factors also played into why WB is going with Batman/Superman in 2015.
