[h=1]Rumor Patrol: ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel to Be Called ‘Batman Vs. Superman’[/h]

In an attempt to show up Marvel continue to expand DC’s Cinematic Universe, Warner Bros. announced at Comic-Con 2013 that their follow-up to Superman reboot Man of Steel would be a Batman/Superman pair-up - and not the direct sequel to that film many were expecting – and not the headlong rush into a Justice League film many were kind of dreading.

Now, scant days after that announcement, a new rumor is burning through the interwebs: according to DC’s screen story guru David S. Goyer (Christopher Nolan’s collaborator on his Bat-films, and co-writer of Man of Steel), the next film will actually be called Batman Vs. Superman or Superman Vs. Batman rather than Man of Steel 2 or Batman and Superman.

According to ComicBook.com, Goyer spoke during a Superman 75th Anniversary panel at Comic-Con – running at the same time as 20th Century Fox’s panel, which apparently blew so many minds that this news was overshadowed for awhile. Here are Goyer’s words:

“So over in Hall H at the Warner Bros.–I guess most people know now–at the end of the Warner Bros. panel, Zack came out and he brought Harry Lennix, who plays General Swanwick in Man of Steel and we–actually, Harry read a bit from [The Dark Knight Returns] and so the next film we’re making, we’re already in pre-production, comes out in summer of 2015 and it’s–we’re actually not sure whether the title is Superman vs. Batman or Batman vs. Superman but yes, it’s–that rematch, that combination, the two guys onscreen and that’s happening.”

Goyer is referring to Lennix’s reading of the following passage from the seminal Frank Miller comic book The Dark Knight Returns, which focused on an older, bitter Batman who is forced to go up against Superman, now a pawn of the American government:

“I want you to remember Clark, in all the years to come. In all your private moments. In all the years to come, my hand at your throat. I want you to remember, the one man who beat you.”

It turns out that Warner Bros. has registered a few domain names which back up Goyer’s information: the studio owns BatmanVsSuperman.com and SupermanVsBatman.com – which ComicBook.com pointed out may have been purchased for possible future comic book tie-in titles – as well as BatmanVsSupermanMovie.com.

They have not registered SupermanVsBatmanMovie.com, which may end up being the best tangible evidence that Batman Vs. Superman may end up being at the very least the working title of the film (it has the best ring to it, anyway).

So this is happening. It’s something our new Superman, Henry Cavill has said he’d like to see, we have that now-famous Easter Egg in Man of Steel - the satellite with a “Wayne Enterprises” logo on it - and Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov has already teased the possibility of this kind of thing: “What Zack and Chris have done with this film is allow you to really introduce other characters into the same world.”

What story might they tell? Well, we here at ScreenRant have offered our choices, Zack Snyder’s reference to The Dark Knight Returns hints at the antagonistic nature of the duo’s initial big-screen team-up. This fits in with some of Snyder’s claims that future Superman adventures will have to address some critics’ biggest problem with Man of Steel: the heavy collateral damage left in the wake of the third act chaos.
And frankly, if Warner Bros. wants to establish a cinematic universe with a common enough tone for all its characters to fit into (by 2015?), it will have to convincingly pull off Batman Vs. Superman first.

Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale are done with the character, and their trilogy is apparently a separate entity from future DC movie entries (much to the likely confusion of audiences and probable annoyance of studio executives).

Fans will have a rough time adjusting at first, but this might be a blessing, overall. We were going to see a new Batman eventually, and even if they ignored some good ideas for a reboot (like a Batman Beyond movie), re-establishing Batman within this Man of Steel universe will offer a good opportunity to reset the tone for the multiple characters who will need to be introduce, all of whom are quite different from each other.

Teen Wolf's Tyler Hoechlin To Play Batman In Man Of Steel Sequel?

Your Daily Dispatch of Celebrity Casting Shenanigans

Let The Caped Crusader Casting Rumors Begin! : Just days after it was announced the sequel to "Man of Steel" would feature Batman (will it be called "Superman vs. Batman" or "Batman vs. Superman"?) reports are surfacing about who might play Bruce Wayne, as Christian Bale has said he's done donning the rubber caped suit. According to fanboy site Cosmic Book News, "Teen Wolf" star Tyler Hoechlin is in the running and will reportedly screen test alongside Henry Cavill. The site also reported that other "better known" actors are in the mix for the coveted role. According to CBN (Warner Bros. has not confirmed any plot details!), the movie will start a year after the events of "Man of Steel" with both heroes not trusting one another, but eventually teaming up to fight villains - two of whom could reportedly be The Joker and Lex Luthor. The site also reported that a few superhero Easter eggs could be worked into the movie, with possible mentions of Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern in the movie.

"Gone With The Wind Fabulous" Money! : In other big money news, "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" star Kenya Moore - who twirled her way into reality TV infamy - will reportedly return for Season 6 of the Bravo series for a whopping $600,000, according to Us Weekly. The mag also reported that fellow stars NeNe Leakes and Kandi Burruss reportedly make $800,000 per season. If the former Miss USA keeps twirling and coming up with catchphrases like "'Gone with the Wind' fabulous," we expect she'll be making NeNe coin very soon.

Henry Cavill Talks Superman and Lois Lane’s Relationship in the ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel

73

Warner Bros./DC fast-tracked development on the sequel to Man of Steel even before director Zack Snyder’s Superman franchise reboot had opened in theaters. However, it wasn’t until the 2013 Comic-Con when everyone found out that another staple DC superhero will make an appearance in the film: Batman, to be exact. The Caped Crusader won’t just make a throwaway cameo in the sequel, either, based on the announcement – by returning screenwriter David S. Goyer – that the official title for Man of Steel 2 will probably be Batman Vs. Superman (or possibly Superman Vs. Batman).

The new Bruce Wayne could make things complicated for Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) in both his work and in his personal life, especially if Goyer’s script takes its cues from some of the most famous Batman/Superman stories that’ve been told in the past. For example, in the World’s Finest animated movie (released in 1997), Wayne begins a relationship with Kent’s fellow Daily Planet journalist and romantic interest, Lois Lane – who, in that universe, is still oblivious about her co-worker’s real identity.

******MAN OF STEEL SPOILERS AHEAD!******

Spoiler: show
Things are going to be different in the Man of Steel sequel, if only because Snyder and Goyer’s take on the Superman mythos changes things up – so that Lois (Amy Adams) is well-aware that Clark Kent and Kal-El are, in fact, one and the same – that is, before Clark starts to work at the Daily Planet. Cavill spoke with IGN just before the Batman/Superman announcement at Comic-Con, so the site didn’t have a chance to pick his brains about the Clark/Lois/Bruce dynamic in the film.

Nonetheless, Cavill did address the benefits of having Lois know who Clark really is (logistically-speaking):
“I think it’s essential [for Lois to know Clark's secret] because if we’re trying to base it reality, there’s no way that Lois has these direct interactions with Superman, and then doesn’t recognize Clark sitting next to her in the office. If she falls in love with Superman, and she’s ignoring a guy who looks just like Superman, behaves just like him, and has the same kind of mannerisms and behavior, then what does that say about Lois? I like this relationship. She saves him just as much as he saves her.”

Goyer’s Man of Steel script included a couple scenes that established how Lois was a pivotal factor in Kal-El’s decision to make himself visible to the public’s eye; not to mention, she provided him with emotional support when he killed General Zod. However, while the pair are on more equal footing from an emotional perspective, when IGN asked Cavill if he wanted Clark and Lois to be more equals, he responded:
“More equals? Well… Can you be equal in power to Superman? I don’t know.”

The interviewer then clarified they meant in terms of emotional power, to which Cavill added (while pausing to think for a moment):
“Yes, absolutely, but [brief pause] 100 percent.”

Cavill’s response calls attention to a simple truth about Superman: no matter how emotionally-vulnerable he becomes, he is still a super-powered alien who is without an equal on Earth (as far as pure strength and physical power goes). That is why Snyder’s indicated that the Man of Steel sequel will address the fallout from the first movie - rather than attempt to top its predecessor in terms of pure world-destroying spectacle (by pitting Kal-El against another equally-powerful opponent). Instead, it sounds as though the sequel will challenge Supe on a more personal/psychological level, with the addition of a character like Batman.

Similarly, Cavill assured IGN that the comparatively light-hearted final minutes from Man of Steel do not foreshadow a more jokey tone in the sequel:
“It wasn’t necessarily a comic effect that I was going for. I mean, I’m not looking at it from your perspective — how you see it — when I’m playing a character. I’m looking at it from a character’s personal experience, and what he’s going through internally. And at that stage of the story, he’s finally reached the [point] where he can be himself. And someone’s in on his secret, so he’s not alone any more. And there’s a different kind of energy behind that. There’s no longer this sense of, ‘I’m alone. What do I do? And now there are aliens invading, who are my people, who want to destroy my planet, and the people I’ve come to love.’ It’s now moved on from that. And so I don’t see that as a chance to play comedy, I see it more as Superman evolving and coming into his own.”

Superman’s newfound confidence might not go over so well with Bruce Wayne, who will probably be less than trusting of a super-powered individual who flies around the planet and does whatever he feels is right (not after the destruction he caused in Man of Steel). Similarly, now that Lois knows Clark’s secret, the latter will have yet another person to answer to – whenever he makes a mistake or does anything questionable as Superman, that is. Could Batman therefore use the Clark-Lois relationship to his advantage in the Man of Steel sequel? (Short answer: it’s a definite possibility.)

Man of Steel 2/Batman Vs. Superman is tentatively slated to reach theaters by Summer 2015.

[h=1]Rumor Patrol: ‘Batman vs. Superman’ Production Moving to Toronto[/h]

It’s safe to assume that most fans anticipating news on the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film – a placeholder title for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel – are more interested in plot details, and how the Big Blue Boy Scout and the Dark Knight will be facing off on the big screen than they are on the politics of financing a big-budget blockbuster.

However, as a result of changing incentives previously used to attract American studios to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, production on Man of Steel 2 will be moving to Ontario. If the rumors are true, Toronto may find itself the new Metropolis.

The report comes courtesy of VanCityBuzz, claiming Man of Steel 2 is just the latest in a growing line of productions moving out of the province for more attractive locations:

“…the unofficially announced news is the devastating relocation of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel 2 production from Vancouver. This news comes to us from a reliable source who works deep within the North American film industry. Much of last month’s Man of Steel was filmed in our beloved city of Vancouver. However, Syncopy and Legendary Pictures have decided to move the sequel’s production to Toronto where Ontarian film tax credits are much more favourable.”

Although bad news for local business, the shift does make sense from a certain perspective; since large portions of the original film’s story took place in sound stages or Canadian wilderness, shooting in Vancouver and the surrounding areas made sense (and provided one of the film’s most fateful easter eggs). But if the sequel will be moving to a more Metropolis-focused plot (as hinted at in the movie’s closing moments), the filmmakers are much less restricted.

Although Ontario contains just as many tracts of sprawling wilderness as B.C., the plot details and themes mentioned by Zack Snyder, David S. Goyer and star Henry Cavill seem to hinge largely on Kal-El’s settling in Metropolis. We’d advise Toronto residents to take out extra disaster insurance (in case patterns hold), but even if a fight between Batman and Superman takes place, it sounds like much of the drama in Man of Steel 2 will take place in the offices of The Daily Planet.

Specifically, explaining how the secretive relationship between Lois Lane and Clark Kent can work with modern audiences. Cavill remains optimistic about exploring the idea, even if Goyer admits that pulling it off will require some “story gymnastics.”

Of course, there’s always Lex Luthor to deal with. Although Superman’s arch-nemesis was only present in Man of Steel via advertising, Snyder isn’t ruling him out for the sequel. Until we see how much Lexcorp advertising begins to show up in and around Toronto’s streets, it will be hard to say exactly what will be driving the events of the film. At least now we know where to look.

Man of Steel 2 is expected to being production in 2014, releasing summer 2015.

[h=1]‘Batman vs. Superman’ Movie to Feature Older Dark Knight?[/h]

There are some big, BIG movies on the horizon for 2015 - The Avengers 2, Star Wars Episode VII - but right now, the one that has most people on pins and needles of excitement is the Batman vs. Supermanmovie that will serve as the sequel to Man of Steel. We know that the film will supposedly see The Dark Knight and The Man of Steel at odds with one another (before an inevitable team-up), and that the cause of that friction will likely be Batman’s distrust of (or anger at) a the fact that an god-like alien is engaging in unchecked (and poorly planned) battles that destroyed Metropolis.

Of course, within that reported narrative framework there arose the question of what version of Batman would we see in Batman vs. Superman; and, if a new rumor is to be believed, then the scenario that many fans (and bloggers) initially guessed at will in fact turn out to be the way the film introduces the world to a new Batman.

According to Batman-on-Film‘s multiple sources, the Batman in Batman vs. Superman will be an older, already experienced Batman. How much older, do you ask? Well, the rumors state that mid-40s is the age range being sought – but for our own betting money, we’d say between mid-30s and mid-40s is the age range the filmmakers could pull from. The reasoning should be obvious, and is a topic we’ve discussed on multiple episodes of our Screen Rant Podcast:

The keystone was always Man of Steel; as we said way back: The development of DC’s shared universe rested entirely on MoS‘ reception. If MoS was able to make a favorable impre$$ion (and it has) then star Henry Cavill would headline the franchise and an older, more experienced Batman would be introduced as a guide for the younger, still learning Superman. If MoS had tanked, then it could be written off as a self-contained story (a la Nolan’s Dark Knight continuity) and a new, older Superman could be cast as the wise shepherd for younger superheroes like Batman.

Obviously at this juncture, Man of Steel and Henry Cavill are locked in. And, with recent rumors that Zack Snyder is consulting Dark Knight Returns creator Frank Miller for advice on the Batman vs. Superman showdown, it’s believable that an older, wiser, Batman – an interpretation Miller explored and one we discussed in our own blueprint for bringing Batman into a Justice League universe - will be what we get.

Batman vs. Superman in the ‘Dark Knight Returns – Part 2′ Animated Movie.

Unlike so many other websites, our previous list of potential new Batman actors already skews toward actors in the late-30s/early-40s range – actors who would also be affordable and available for what is sure to be a long-running superhero franchise (so, no to those Jude Law, Josh Brolin, or Jon Hamm theories – and let’s just put the Christian Bale talk to rest entirely). An older Batman (especially one going up against the likes of Superman) needs to be more sagely and strategy-minded – none of those flimsy gadgets or half-cooked scream loud and attack hard tactics seen in the Nolan films. For our money, actors like Hobbit star Richard Armitage or Fast & Furious 6 star Luke Evans convey that type of personality perfectly (Armitage in particular).

A perfect example of a Batman/Superman team-up done right is undoubtedly the three-part “Wold’s Finest” episode of Superman: The Animated Series that aired in 1997. Check out the clip below for example of how an older, more mature Batman keeps step with Superman, and why the worlds of Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne (not just their hero alter-egos) tend to meld so well:

All in all, this reasoning is sound: Batman and Superman having a habit of really helping to inform the other man about who he is, what he stands for, with a nice bit of personal growth inspired by the other man. For Superman of the MoS continuity, this would mean learning to handle problems in ways other than brute force, confronting the death and destruction he caused, and getting a little be less naive about his stature and place in the world. For Bats, coming to trust Superman would pull him a little further out of his dark and cynical world view, would give him something hopeful to truly believe in, and would introduce him to the concept of having friends and relying on others. In short: using the right character setups and development, we could actually get respective Batman and Superman story arcs we’ve never really seen before (i.e. not origin stories!).
________Batman vs. Supermanwill be released sometime in 2015. Stay tuned for more details as they develop.

[h=1]‘Batman vs. Superman’ Casting Rumors – Who Could Play an Older Batman?[/h]

It’s still hard to believe, comic book fans: not only will Man of Steel 2 include a brand new Batman, but screenwriter David S. Goyer let it slip that the dark knight and Superman will meet as opponents, not partners. While that announcement may have guaranteed Warner Bros. as much, if not more anticipation and buzz for their sequel than they enjoyed with Man of Steel, it also opened the door to brand new rumors and gossip surrounding potential casting.

Since the cat was let out of the bag, word has arrived that director Zack Snyder and Goyer are not looking to ‘reboot’ Batman in the traditional sense, but want to cast an older, more experienced Bruce Wayne to counter Cavill’s Kent. It was only a matter of time before rumors of a shortlist surfaced, with names now ranging from downright ridiculous to… fairly believable.

The early list of names being circulated around the studio comes courtesy of THR, although the sources themselves claim that Snyder is a long way from beginning the casting process. But the call for an aging Batman has apparently already brought Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad) to the forefront – among others.

While Brolin’s career has certainly seen a surge of activity in recent years, it seems highly unlikely for Snyder to cast a Batman who is only a few years younger than his on-screen Super-father, Russell Crowe. However, even if Snyder may be looking for a Batman close to forty, an actor pushing fifty is a long shot (even if Brolin’s Bruce Wayne being introduced to Diane Lane’s ‘Martha Kent’ would be interesting for… several reasons).

Unfortunately, most of the names tossed out (admittedly nothing more than rumors at this point) easily fall into the ‘too famous,’ ‘too unproven,’ or ‘been there done that’ categories. Whether it’s Joe Manganiello (who previously pursued a role as Superman and remains hopeful for Batman), Matthew Goode (who worked with Snyder on Watchmen) or Max Martini (most recently seen as part of a father-son team in Pacific Rim), the rumored actors fail to grab our attention; not only are their resumes somewhat sparse, they’re unsurprising.

Taking a quick look at the trend in superhero casting – Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and now Chris Pratt on the Marvel side, Henry Cavill for Warner Bros. – implies that studios aren’t just after actors who won’t break the bank for lengthy contracts, and directors are after leading men who aren’t well-known to North American audiences. In other words, not Ryan Gosling, who fails to fit any of the criteria for the new Dark Knight (older, rougher) yet continues to crop up in any fan discussion.

Yet in today’s film industry, casting an iconic hero like Batman seems to go against the studio’s usual rules to follow for building a blockbuster. He lacks star power to attract an audience? That’s fine, he’s playing Batman, in a Superman movie. Not in fighting shape? We’ll have him hit the gym and be unrecognizable.

All the director needs is an actor who sells the part, and while finding a proven-yet-unknown actor who passed his ‘heartthrob years’ long ago may be a challenge, a few can certainly be found (if not in America, then abroad).

It’s no surprise, then, to see our top pick for the next Batman Richard Armitage among those being discussed. As a seasoned British actor with his size and relative anonymity among American audiences (and currently sitting at the age of 41), he’s one name we’d list among real contenders. He’s currently in the process of turning heads as Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit Trilogy; next seen in The Desolation of Smaug (2013) alongside yet another of our Batman contenders, Luke Evans.

Having recently been signed to star in the upcoming reboot of The Crow, both Evans and Armitage are talented leading men who are not only being turned to as cornerstones of movie franchises, but remain relatively unknown to mass audiences. Both are young and physcially fit enough to pull off action convincingly, with the looks to make both the slick Bruce Wayne and grizzled Batman seem believable.

That being said, it’s unclear whether size and muscle mass is required to sell Batman as the deadly protector of Gotham City. While Brolin and other aging actors may be able to throw a strong punch, Man of Steel proved that a hero who relies solely on strength may not captivate audiences in an extended fight sequence. Perhaps a thinner, leaner, faster martial artist would be more faithful to the Batman mythology than someone who’s simply ‘big.’

Since Batman’s strength is dwarfed next to the likes of Henry Cavill’s Superman, wouldn’t it be better to cast an actor who was noticably smaller than Cavill? These are all questions that Snyder, Goyer and executive producer Christopher Nolan will have to ask themselves, but with a script still a long way from being completed, it is far too soon for any actor – let alone some of the most famous stars in the world – to have an inside track.

We’ll keep you updated as the production progresses, but for now, we’d recommend every casting detail be taken with a grain of salt. At least until Snyder and Goyer know what the movie will be about, if nothing else.
