THE RAID 2: BERANDAL (2014)
~ "
Suck it up. Don’t fuck it up."
Let me start by mentioning my utmost praise and likeness for the first The Raid: Redemption (2012), which was a massive introduction by Indonesian cinema. I loved it for its original plot, the extremely crucial and wonderfully done stunts, and the overall cinematography where the director had done an incredible job at it.
In many ways,
The Raid 2 does
some things right, and looks stupid. Let me explain. In first movie, protagonist
Rama was stuck in a tall building with everyone trying to hunt him and his team down, so he was bound to improvise, utilizing hand to hand combat making it more natural, and acceptable given the atmosphere. However, in Raid 2, the environment asks for a Guns Blazing action. No one in his right mind would attack a huge block of people without any sort of weapons. It doesn’t have to be a gun. Heck, pickup a f*cking baseball bat. BUT NO … it had to be hand to hand. So there you go, STUPID. (Plus, i don't like this new naming scheme which "
immediately" hints the non-seriousness of the movie. Who the f*ck names movies like "The Raid
2". Learn from Christopher Nolan you idiots on how to name movies. Batman Beings >>> The Dark Knight >>> The Dark Knight Rises ... THATS how you choose names)
However, forget its drawbacks for a minute. Because what was crucial in first movie, is still the same. Fights are more violent, more brutal, engaging and quite simply
explosive.
That prison yard fight scene was quite simply the most amazing scene i have watched in a long time. Further into the movie, we see Weapons including hammers, baseball bats, knives, machetes, and yes ... "
Hands" :tv: It feels pure to the roots. Who needs guns when hand to hand combat is THIS dangerous. Scene are shot so beautifully, that its hard to tell the CGI involved. Magnificent piece of work, and one of the most amazing camera work i have ever seen. I loved the fact that fight scenes were mostly kept music-less, which gave them a stronger and punchier feeling, making them more effective and engaging.
The Raid 2 doesn't just excels there. It starts from the same place, the first one ends. Some of the characters make a come back. It perfectly creates a thrilling atmosphere throughout opening sequences, and neatly builds up its story.
How the gang war builds up, was important to the plot, which is why it takes its sweet time, via 2 hours & 30 minutes time line. The "
personal stuffs" are kept to absolute minimum which i also adored in the first movie. The main villain is a corporate asshole, who is just as brutal as it can get, which is not bad. Btw, am i the only one who thinks that
Hammer Girl was quietly badass and mildly amusing? :looking: However, i almost stood up for a round of applause when her sun glasses fell off, showing
why she wore them.
Another tiny thing bothered me a little.
Rama’s involvement. It is major,
but his appearance seemed reduced, and more emphasis was being given to the tension buildup between gang wars. But that could be just me. Because i forgot everything, when i saw that
final fight sequences mano-a-mano with that bent-knives-welding Assasssin. That actually gave me some goose bumps. Not the most noteable scene, but certainly the most intimidating one.
Overall, i have nothing but solid praise and love for The Raid 2, and i would happily ignore its problems for its positives. It will be one heck of an action movie you'll watch in Years, and not to forget ... is
pure to its core.
9/10. Give
Iko Uwais a standing ovation for his marvelous achievement.
