Ex Machina (2015)
I love techno thrillers and this was one of the best. It had a simple setup (if AI has reached the point of consciousness or not?) but it built it in a way that felt fresh and intriguing (unlike generic movies like Transcendence).
Alex Garland has written some pretty interesting movies (28 Days Later being my favorite) and he brought the same social critique and thought provoking sensitivity to his directorial debut, which is stylish, thrilling and at the end, chilling.
The setting consists of a remote location of a genius recluse played brilliantly by the ever impressive Oscar Isaac. Domnhall Gleeson is the viewer substitute, and we see him from becoming a naive coder to a doubting cynic. Alicia Vikander is the machine which is the central mystery of the movie and probably stole the show from its capable leads.
I will watch this movie again, I am sure. It makes you think, it involves you and absorbs you.
P.S. If you like stuff like this, I recommend Black Mirror.
8.5/10
