well i think that the one fighting flash was thawne's future relative otherwise he might have killed eddie or hurt him... that makes sense... but i also think that dr. wells is zoom the one who travels faster than anyone else due to him manipulating time rather than utilizing speed force... it could be opposite though... isn't zoom wally west's villain? haven't read comics much so i just know outline stories...
yes, the guy we saw in this finale midseason was indeed reverse flash from the future who is thawne's relative and that's why did not hurt thawne as to not get vanished from time himself :p and wells is zoom who is conspiring with thawne ... yup so far but don't wanna go into much to save me the surprise... so why they are doing it let the show speak for itself

and yes zoom is wally's villain that's why at the start of the show comic readers got the hint that wally indeed might show up in the show aswell ! let's see man... this is turning out to be REAL GOOD

[h=1]‘The Flash’ Casts ‘Mad Men’s Peyton List as ‘Golden Glider’[/h]

The first half of The Flash‘s inaugural season may have given just a tease of the speedster’s classic Rogues Gallery, but it looks like the second half will be calling on more than fans thought likely. The latest casting keeps the parade of DC Comics villains going, with actress Peyton List (Mad Men, The Tomorrow People) cast as Lisa Snart a.k.a. Golden Glider.

The announcement comes courtesy of Access Hollywood, confirming our suspicions that with Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) now established in the show’s fiction, the way was paved for his little sister. However, the first details on List’s role show some serious differences from the comic book origin:

While Leonard is cold and calculating, Lisa is a wild child and anxious to prove to her older brother she’s got what it takes to be in his criminal gang. She is sly, charming, and even a little sadistic. She’s also not afraid to use her sexuality to get what she wants, which will put her on a collision course with S.T.A.R. Labs employee and friend of The Flash — Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes).

In the classic comics, Lisa joined forces with her brother, putting her skills as a figure skater to work in the line of crime (it’s possible) and taking the name ‘Golden Glider.’ In the New 52 reboot, Glider was given a new story: the specifics are unclear, but when an explosion leaves her in a coma, it’s an astral projection of Lisa that starts making trouble.

The synopsis offered by AH doesn’t offer any insight into which version of Lisa viewers may see, but it’s clear that Cisco Ramon’s weakness for a pretty face is going to steer him – and the rest of the S.T.A.R. Labs team – into trouble when she makes her debut in Episode 16 – suitably titled “Rogue Time”. Her casting also means another reunion is in store, with List and Robbie Amell (The Flash‘s Ronnie Raymond) having shared the screen (and a few love scenes) on The CW’s The Tomorrow People. It’s becoming clearer and clearer that joining The CW these days brings with it some job security.

Cisco will have some help (we hope) when Glider makes her first appearance on The Flash, as it was also announced that Sleepy Hollow‘s Nicholas Gonzalez (The O.C.) will also be introduced in Episode 16 as Dante Ramon, Cisco’s brother. Unfortunately, the details reported by TVLine may imply family drama to go along with Cisco’s romantic drama, with the charming older brother secretly resentful of Cisco’s brilliance.

The synopsis for the episode is still a mystery, but the producers have made no secret of the fact that a Rogue team-up is imminent. Beginning with Captain Cold and Heat Wave, Mark Hamill is set to reprise his role as Trickster not long after, and now an even more outlandish villain is confirmed as well. We’ve already offered a few other contenders for The Flash‘s metahuman ranks, so with Glider down, who’s next?
Are you Tomorrow People or Mad Men fans happy to see List join the cast (in a potentially recurring role)? Or do you have your doubts the a villain like Golden Glider can be faithfully adapted to the TV series?

[h=1]‘The Flash’: Mark Hamill Talks Reprising The Trickster[/h]

The CW’s The Flash has already seen success in its debut season by breaking ratings records for the network both with its premiere and a crossover event with Arrow. Even before The Flash premiered, executive producer and DC Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns, touted the series as “the most faithful DC Comics adaptation ever.” In addition to the comics, The Flash has also paid homage to the 1990 CBS series about the speedster.

The previous show’s star, John Wesley Shipp, plays the father of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), Henry Allen. In the midseason finale, Amanda Pays reprised her role as Dr. Tina McGee – albeit a new version of the character – on The Flash. Additionally, Mark Hamill recently spoke about returning to his role from the 1990 series as The Trickster.

In an interview with IGN, Hamill talked both about reprising his role as The Trickster for The Flash as well as the iconic Luke Skywalker for 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, unlike Luke Skywalker, The Trickster will be a different incarnation of the character, and Hamill has some idea of what the new version will look like.

Read Hamill’s full quote:

“Well listen, it’s really in the embryonic stages. We discussed it over the phone. I like these guys, what they’ve already done with the show. I’m a fan. I had watched all seven or eight episodes that they had at the time… When they asked me to be a part of it, the last thing I was thinking was that I would be returning to that specific role, but I think you’re going to be really pleased with what they’ve come up with. It was totally unexpected.”

In his previous role as The Trickster, Hamill played the criminal psychopath James Jesse, who was based on the original incarnation of the villain from the DC comics. However, in the early 2000s, Axel Walker, created by Johns, took up the mantle of The Trickster from Jesse.

It’s difficult to discern from Hamill’s comments what The Flash producers Johns, Andrew Kreisberg, and Greg Berlanti may be planning for The Trickster. But, perhaps a storyline involving both James Jesse (played by Hamill again) and Axel Walker could be “totally unexpected” – or simply wishful thinking.

Though he may not have given away too many details on his return to The Flash, Hamill did say it’s an unexpectedly enjoyable experience, as it was with Star Wars:

“I said this before [about Luke Skywalker]. It’s like putting on an old pair of pants in the back of the closet and finding out there’s a 20 dollar bill in the pocket. It’s like ‘Oh, wow! I forgot all about this!’ And it’s more enjoyable because it’s so unexpected.”

Certainly, fans of Star Wars and The Flash alike will be excited to see the actor reprise his roles of the past. Though, in the case of The Flash, there will be a little more room for reinvention, which adds another interesting component to Hamill’s upcoming appearance in the series. However, according to the actor, fans should enjoy the new incarnation of his character.

[h=1]‘The Flash’ Adds ‘Spartacus’ Star Liam McIntyre as ‘Weather Wizard’[/h]

If there was any doubt that the minds behind The CW’s Arrow and The Flash were looking to Roman-era action/drama for their casting, the latest confirmation should put it to rest. With Barry Allen’s path to superheroism looking to get even more challenging when the show returns from its winter hiatus, it seems fans can look forward to one more member of his classic Rogues Gallery being brought to life.

After some speculation online, it seems ComicBook.com has confirmed that Australian-born Liam McIntyre (Spartacus: War of the Damned) will be joining the show as villain Mark Mardon a.k.a. Weather Wizard. How another metahuman with control of the weather will pose a threat to Central City isn’t clear, but the seeds for the character’s addition go all the way back to The Flash‘s premiere episode.

For those watching the show from the start (and keeping track of the various villains’ comic book past) it was assumed that Weather Wizard had already gotten his moment to shine in the pilot. In the episode, mastery over wind and precipitation was granted to Clyde Mardon (played by Chad Rook), one half of the infamous ‘Mardon Brothers’; responsible for a number of armed robberies. But when the S.T.A.R. Labs disaster turned the pair’s plane to scrap metal, the other Mardon brother’s fate was never explained.

Presumably, until now (or, to be more exact, several weeks from the time of this writing).

In keeping with the comic source material, it will be Mark Mardon who fully adopts the mantle of Weather Wizard, apparently blessed with the exact same (or similar) powers of his now-deceased brother. With Detective Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) responsible for his brother’s death, it’s safe to assume that Barry’s adopted father will be his prime target. That means he’ll have Central City’s Flash to contend with (assuming Firestorm hasn’t emerged on the scene by that point as well).

However, the rest of the antagonists being recruited implies that McIntyre (only the latest Spartacus alum recruited to The CW’s shared universe) may make some powerful allies of his own. The second half of The Flash‘s first season already promises to bring more of the Rogues to the screen than fans likely hoped. Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell) are set to join forces, Cold’s sister Golden Glider (Peyton List) isn’t far behind, and even Mark Hamill’s Trickster is getting a return appearance.

The only real risk facing the showrunners is keeping the Rogues, as a team and individually, compelling for the long run. Fans would have gotten on board with introducing even a single Rogue or two per season, so while cutting to the chase is sure to be well-received, it brings its own set of challenges.

Whatever the writers have planned, adding another popular actor among their target audience can’t hurt. It’s particularly good news for Spartacus fans, as McIntyre joins Arrow‘s Manu Bennet (Deathstroke), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Amanda Waller), Nick Tarabay (Boomerang) and Katrina Law (Nyssa Rhatko) as former members of the Starz series.

[h=1]‘The Flash’: First Look At Official ‘Firestorm’ Costume[/h]

There’s no question that the outfit lacks the flair of The Flash himself, but it would seem that it’s the chest device that fans should pay closest attention to. The glowing chest piece was previously teased by Amell himself, but the fact that the clothing shown above doesn’t match either that teaser image or the one shown below is telling.

Those viewers who witnessed Raymond’s powers in action know they aren’t exactly ‘heroic’ at first glance. The ability to burst into flames and project blasts isn’t quite useful without training, and if the show is taking further cues from the comics, a containment suit – or device? – may be the solution. Apparently, a device capable of being worn over nearly any article of clothing (who said the team at S.T.A.R. Labs couldn’t pair function with fashion?).

[h=1]‘The Flash’ Casts ‘Dexter’ Actor Devon Graye as the Second Trickster[/h]

When The Flash returns from its midseason hiatus, there will be plenty of villains, both new and old, for Barry to go up against. We’ve already met Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), and the two will team up in next week’s midseason premiere. Liam McIntyre will join the series as Weather Wizard, seeking revenge for his brother who was killed in the pilot. And even Cold’s sister, Golden Glider (Peyton List), is set to appear

When it comes time for another of The Flash’s infamous Rogues to join The CW show, there will apparently be two of them. Earlier, we were (pleasantly) surprised to learn that Mark Hamill was reprising his role as James Jesse a.k.a. The Trickster from the original Flash television series. For this version, however, Hamill’s Trickster will be serving a life sentence in Iron Heights, and when a copycat criminal starts terrorizing Central City, Detective West and Barry ask Jesse for help in taking him down.

ComicBook.com has learned that Devon Graye – best known for playing teenager Dexter Morgan on Dexter – will play that copycat criminal, Axel. Presumably, this character is Axel Walker, who in the comics becomes the second Trickster after Jesse quits the criminal lifestyle. On The Flash, it’ll be Axel’s emergence on the scene that spurs Jesse into helping the police put a stop to this Trickster imposter.

Devon Graye as a teenage Dexter Morgan on ‘Dexter.’

When it was first announced that Hamill would again play The Trickster (coincidentally reuniting him with former Flash John Wesley Shipp) many had guessed we’d see something along these lines, with Hamill as an older, possibly retired Trickster and another actor as a new incarnation of the character. That appears to be exactly what’s happening, but the twist of an incarcerated James Jesse helping to thwart his impersonator is a fun spin on what’s already been done before in the comics.

Both versions of The Trickster are set to appear in episode 17 of The Flash, though an exact air date or title is unknown. Whether or not we’ll see Graye’s Trickster join up with the rest of The Rogues is also unknown, but before then we’ll definitely see Captain Cold and Heat Wave join forces in next week’s midseason premiere, “Revenge of the Rogues.”

Sure seems like Barry will have more Rogues than he’ll know what to do when The Flash returns.

Do you think the series is at risk of introducing too many villains too soon? What do you think of Devon Graye’s casting as the second Trickster, Axel Walker? Let us hear from you in the comments below!

[h=1]‘The Flash’: Grant Gustin Teases ‘Big Twist’ on the Way[/h]

The Flash returns tonight after a fiery mid-season finale that brought Barry Allen closer than ever to finding out the truth about what happened to his mother, in his pursuit of the mysterious enemy known only as Reverse Flash. There’s also the return of Caitlin’s presumed-dead fiancé Ronnie to deal with, as Ronnie seems extremely damaged by his trauma and will require a little training before he can become the comic book hero Firestorm.

In fact, there’s a whole lot that’s going to be thrown at Barry in the second half of The Flash‘s first season. Weather Wizard (Liam McIntyre) will arrive on the scene to claim revenge for the death of his brother in the show’s pilot; the Trickster (Mark Hamill) acquires a copycat criminal (Devon Graye); and there’s even going to be some time travel thrown in for good measure.

In between battling baddies there are quite a few unanswered questions for Barry to solve, such as the question of who killed his mother and the identity of Reverse Flash. There are plenty of fan theories speculating as to how these mysteries will be solved, but in an interview with EW actor Grant Gustin promises that the show will find a way to surprise its fans:

“There’s a big twist that even surprised me. I’ve seen all the predictions online. No one has predicted the big twist that’s coming at the end of this season.”

Of course, telling people that there’s a big twist will only make them work even harder to try and figure out what that twist will be. Perhaps Gustin is bluffing and the twist is that there is no twist.

The second half of the season will also see the return of Leonard Snart a.k.a Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), who teams up with Mick Rory a.k.a. Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell) in his efforts to take down the Flash. Purcell explained that the two of them have “a very powerful love/hate relationship” and that Leonard’s cooler, collected nature is often needed to rein in Mick’s hot temper.

“I have heard rumors that there is a larger plan, but at the moment, Snart is eager to reestablish himself as top dog and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen… My motivation is to figure out where Flash’s weak spots are. I’ve already figured out that he has a heart and he cares about people. He’s got a team and everyone on that team is vulnerable to predators like Cold and Heat Wave, and if I can go through them to get to The Flash, I certainly will.”

Out of all of Barry’s compatriots Leonard should probably target Cisco first as revenge for landing him with such a dorky nickname, but apparently it’s another member of the team who is attacked in order to get to Barry. Captain Cold was easily one of the best villains showcased in the first half of the season, so it will be great to see him back on the show.

[h=1]‘The Flash’: Firestorm Actors Talk Costumes & Spinoff Potential[/h]

Central City forensics expert Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) will face some serious challenges when The Flash returns for the second half of its debut season, but he won’t be the only DC Comics superhero taking the spotlight. Sharing super-duties with the scarlet speedster is Firestorm, played by Robbie Amell (The Tomorrow People) and Victor Garber (Alias, Argo) – and the dual credit is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what makes Firestorm one of a kind.

Introduced as the lovable fiance of Caitlin Snow Ronnie Raymond (Amell) was presumed dead after the events of the series’ pilot. Raymond would later emerge as a crazed, tortured vagrant able to turn his body to flame, making him a far cry from a costumed superhero. Now both Amell and Garber have offered more details on their shared form, the technology used to separate them, and why heroism may require a sacrifice from them both.

We’ve already offered a breakdown of the essential Firestorm facts fans should know, but the short version of the origin story sees Ronnie and Dr. Martin Stein (Garber) fused into a single form: two minds forced to occupy the same body. Speaking with CBR about their upcoming arc, the actors touched on the challenge of portraying that intimate a relationship – but why they’re eager to tackle it:

Amell: Our first episode together, we’re supposed to have been battling for control mentally against each other for over a year now, so there would be a familiarity — and we already had that. We went out for dinner before we shot anything together, in Vancouver — we saw each other at the table read, and went out to dinner that night, and got to catch back up. It was nice to come in knowing and having a friend, and having fun.
Garber: There’s an immediate trust, that you can just throw the ball, and they’ll bat it back. That’s what acting mostly is. It’s just listening and responding, and Robbie is really good at that.

Amell promises that although the ‘new’ Ronnie isn’t the one Caitlin was set to marry, that version will be back on the scene before long. Apparently, it seems that fans will have a device – seen in previous promotional photos – to thank for that.

According to Amell, that device is known as the ‘Splicer,’ presumably what makes it possible for Stein and Raymond to be separated, and allow Ronnie to return to his former self. But it may be too early to call it an actual “costume”:

Amell: [The Firestorm costume] will definitely evolve. Right now, it just happens to be the wardrobe I was wearing when the splicer gets put on. The splicer is really the only piece of the costume that I think will be consistent, and that’ll be a staple. I think the rest of it is interchangeable.
Garber: They’re going to have more money next season, so they’ll change it. [Laughs]

Both Stein and Raymond may be eager for some time apart once they’ve parted ways in the coming episodes, but just like in the comics, that division comes with a price. The two men being joined is what makes Firestorm – and his mastery over atomic structure itself – possible. Amell claims that the duo will have to team up and aid The Flash, meaning Stein must give up his own identity to save the day.

It’s not a typical take on a superhero, but that reluctance is something Garber sees as a chance for character development and some lighter humor:

In my second episode, we come together knowing that we have a responsibility, and we both take that seriously… From there on, of course, there will be banter and conflicts, which is what makes it fun.
[Dr. Martin Stein] is sort of a reluctant hero. He’s somebody who came into this without meaning to, this conjoining experience, and then, when we are finally separated… He doesn’t know quite who he is or what he is. I think it’s a process of rediscovering his atoms, and finding himself again. He’s a really smart guy who the Flash enlists for help. Barry comes to him, and they have a great meeting. I think he becomes sort of an advisor, mentor guy.

The personal and mutual sacrifices required of Ronnie and Dr. Stein is what made the hero a lasting one in the comic books, so it’s nice to hear that it will be kept alive and well in the character’s early appearances. Of course, when you have a leading man like Robbie Amell and a supporting character in (the seemingly enthusiastic) Victor Garber, a small role could seem like a bit of a waste. Especially with The CW already discussing their next superhero spinoff.

Could Ronnie Raymond and Dr. Martin Stein’s superhero duo(?) to join the shared Arrow/Flash universe? Apparently, the actors don’t have any clearer a sense of what the network is planning than the fans:

Garber: Honestly, we really don’t. Like Greg [Berlanti] was saying, there’s a lot of talking going on, and I’m sure that we’re part of that, but we’re not privy to any of that.
Amell: They don’t tell us crap. You guys will probably know before we do.
Garber: Really, I think all will be revealed at the same time, and it will come as a surprise to all of us.

There’s no question that the actors have the skills necessary to carry a CW series (with Amell having previously led the short-lived Tomorrow People), and the full reveal of Ronnie’s powers in The Flash‘s midseason finale likely convinced any skeptics. But as the characters are fleshed out over the second half of the season, it should be easier to see just what aspirations the producers have for Firestorm in the near future.

What would you like to see from Firestorm? Should the duo join the S.T.A.R. Labs team as backup for Grant Gustin’s speedster, or leave the scene once their very own mission is adopted? Share your own hopes or concerns in the comments, and we’ll keep you posted as more Firestorm details arrive.

[h=1]‘Arrow’s Felicity & Ray Palmer Are Coming to ‘The Flash’[/h]

Following the epic Flash vs. Arrow crossover event from this past December, The CW is wasting no time in getting some of its various cast members together again. Though Felicity Smoak – the computer genius member of Team Arrow and potential love interest to Oliver Queen – already appeared on The Flash prior to said epic crossover, it looks like she’s going to do it again.

As stated in a new report from Variety, Felicity will be returning to Central City for the 18th episode of the Arrow sister series, and she’ll be bringing Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer a.k.a. ATOM along with her.

Said producer Andrew Kreisberg:

In episode four of ‘Flash’ when Felicity came by, it wasn’t just a gag… It really was integrated into the story. When you reach what’s going on in ‘The Flash’ at that point in the season, Barry is really at a crossroads. Having Felicity come by exactly when he needs her really plays into the whole storyline. It’s fine because… Ray Palmer is all about technology and STAR Labs is all about technology. We get to see Ray so happy to be in STAR Labs… With Cisco [Carlos Valdes] and Ray, they’re new best friends. The STAR Labs team is going to help Ray further his ATOM project.

Of course, this raises speculation as to whether or not The CW’s planning to back-door pilot a new ATOM series in The Flash. And while that’s an intriguing thought, that possibility is probably still at least another season off. If there’s one thing we can’t call The CW, it’s greedy. They could have easily used Flash to quickly launch yet another series for their slate, or they could’ve picked up Greg Berlanti’s Supergirl. Instead, the network has chosen to play the long game with its superhero series, not unlike Marvel and its movies.

What Palmer heading to Flash indicates more than anything is The CW’s commitment to building a DC world on their network people can be proud of. Does this mean they’ll compromise the integrity of a show to expand it? Doubtful, especially when the network has already announced less than standard plans to expand the universe with the likes of an animated series for Vixen that will air on CW Seed.

We – hopefully – aren’t going to see iZombie meets Arrow. We – probably – aren’t going to see Vixen meets Flash in live-action form. However, we will most likely watch The CW continue finding moments to sell its universe as a single organism that can grow and change with every new major event, and the best way they can do that is by having cast members pop in and out of each other’s series whenever they have the opportunity to do so.

‘The Flash’ To Introduce Time Travel With ‘Groundhog Day’ Episode

CW spinoff series The Flash has certainly lived up to its role as the weird, sci-fi counterpart of Arrow. Centered around the preternatural crime-fighting efforts of Barry Allen, the fastest (actually, second fastest) man alive, The Flash has already featured a number of superpowered villains including Multiplex (who can create clones of himself), Weather Wizard (who can create weather effects), Plastique (who can cause things to explode by touching them), and Girder (who can turn his skin to steel).

Things are going to get even stranger by the end of the The Flash‘s first season, as a few weeks from now an episode will introduce Barry and his friends to the phenomenon of time travel. The show has already laid the groundwork for the possibility of time travel through the mysterious exploits of Dr. Harrison Wells, and it could have very interesting implications for Barry’s investigation into the death of his mother.

There are a lot of potential outcomes of time travel in a TV show (some of which can get really, really complicated), and The Flash executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly that Barry’s first encounter with time travel will result in an episode that blends very different tones.

“There’s an episode coming up where there is inadvertent connection to the Speed Force that results in probably our funniest hour as well as our darkest hour as the dangers of time travel come to light. It’s a mashup between Back to the Future and Terminator—the good version of time travel and the bad version of time travel.”

Kreisberg has talked about time travel being “played both for hilarity and darkness” in the past when referring to episode 15 of the series, which will introduce Liam McIntyre as the second incarnation of Weather Wizard. Fans of the comics will no doubt be excited to hear about the show establishing the existence of the Speed Force, the energy from which Barry derives his superspeed. Since the Speed Force is timeless and touches upon all points in the past, present and future, it may well end up being the catalyst for Barry’s adventures through time.

As for the way that time travel will be implemented, The Flash star Grant Gustin said that it will be similar to the 1993 comedy Groundhog Day, the title of which has entered into popular vernacular as a way to describe any plot that involves repeating the same day over and over again. Just about every sci-fi show from Star Trek to The X-Files has had an episode dedicated to the concept, and now it’s The Flash‘s turn.

“It’s a complete accident the first time [he time travels]. It’s really confusing because now we’re playing with timelines and we’re having to shoot things a couple different ways. It’s like a Groundhog Day-type element. It’s really funny and really exciting… He’s not handling it incredibly well. It’s freaking him out a little bit.
“He realizes, ‘Holy s**t, this an opportunity to change things with my family’s past. He doesn’t know yet to maybe not do that, but that’s where Barry’s at when he realizes what he’s just learned that he can do, that he can maybe save his mom.”

Man fans have speculated that the red blur that young Barry Allen saw on the night that his mother was killed, which whisked him out of his house and down the street, was actually his future self battling Reverse Flash in an attempt to save his mother. Will he ever manage to succeed? Kreisberg didn’t give much away, but he did say that Barry’s attempts to fix the past will have “massive repercussions for the show… After that episode, things are never going to be the same on The Flash.”

[h=1]‘The Flash’ Casts ‘Walking Dead’ Alum Emily Kinney as the Bug-Eyed Bandit[/h]

As CW’s The Flash sprints its way to its first season finale, the show is looking for as many heavy hitting guests stars it can to round out the remainder of its cast. Most recently, the show nabbed Mark Hamill in a reprisal of his famed Trickster from the original 90s Flash series.

CW’s latest hit DC TV show has just nabbed another guest star that’s sure to bring in a hefty fan base: Emily Kinney a.k.a. Beth Greene from AMC’s hit zombie series The Walking Dead.

PUNKD Images has posted a photo of Kinney recently arrived in Vancouver for an appearance on the Flash TV show as a new, female take on the Bug-Eyed Bandit – this time named Brie Larvan. The Bug-Eyed Bandit has been around in comic book form since the mid-1960s and is traditionally able to control insects to do their bidding. Considering the character’s ties to Atom, one has to imagine Kinney’s appearance on Flash could eventually spin-out into Arrow - or, if The CW gods see fit, an Atom spin-off series.

Gender-swapping aside, it’s not clear how much of the Bandit’s origins and dynamic is going to be changed for Greg Berlanti’s small-screen universe. However, considering the character’s abilities are based in scientific research not super powers, we would hope this iteration goes more the way of Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold. As seen in the Flash vs Arrow crossover event (and Cold’s other appearances on the series), one doesn’t necessarily need special abilities in order to be a formidable adversary to Barry and his team; they just need to be willing to go one step further than him.

Emily Kinney as Beth on ‘The Walking Dead’

So far, The Flash has done a great job at presenting a cache of villains that really do well in their respective one-off episodes. However, as Arrow has been doing lately and Flash experimented with through Captain Cold, we would love to start seeing these villains get more than a single episode to shine. Given the lore connections in print, Larvan’s story seems like one that would be perfect for multi-episodes arcs within the universe, similar to what we saw through the appearance of Tockman earlier this season.

Of course, there’s no real reason to be concerned about the minutia of all of this. Berlanti and his creative team have proven successfully on more than one occasion they know how to handle this lore properly. So, for now, we’re just going to sit back and watch the chips fall where they may.

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW.

[h=1]How The CW Used ‘Flash’ To Pitch a ‘Firestorm’ Spinoff[/h]

[WARNING: this article contains spoilers for The Flash Season 1, Episode 14.]-
There are few entertainment landscapes as harsh as that of the TV Pilot; some make it to air, some make it to fans, and others never see the light of day. Few are able to avoid the gauntlet, but with the success of Arrow, the producers and network tried a more subtle approach: use one DC Comics superhero adapted to television to help launch another. And so it was that the success of Green Arrow helped bring The Flash to life.
Fans have hotly discussed the possibilities once two new superheroes-in-the-making were added this season – Brandon Routh‘s Ray Palmer and Robbie Amell‘s Ronnie Raymond – as The CW looked to expand its shared universe (and a Firestorm series our early favorite). Even so, Episode 14 of The Flash took us by surprise, feeling much, much more like a backdoor Firestorm pilot than even Barry Allen’s introduction into Starling City ever did.

Some may have enjoyed the episode as just another dose of metahuman/science fiction, but when spinoffs are not being teased, but outright confirmed, the amount of time and energy put into establishing the strengths of a Firestorm series can’t be ignored. Some might doubt the character’s staying power, but allow us to lay out the reasons we’re already giving The CW the benefit of the doubt – and awaiting more hints that Firestorm will be the next CW spinoff.
-
[h=2]The Talent[/h][h=2]
[/h]Considering how rarely superheroes are adapted to live-action (or were, before The Flash‘s debut), it was encouraging to hear that Robbie Amell, previous star of The Tomorrow People had joined the cast as Ronnie Raymond – the man who might one day become ‘Firestorm The Nuclear Man.’ With executive producer Greg Berlanti’s past work on Tomorrow People, Amell was just the first cast member to find a new role in the Arrow/Flash universe.
We had minor suspicions at the time that Amell’s casting could hint at a larger role down the road, having previously starred in the comic book-y CW drama. But those suspicions skyrocketed when producers Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim called on their Eli Stone alum Victor Garber to play Firestorm’s other half, Professor Martin Stein. Amell’s time in the spotlight may have been short-lived, but Garber’s involvement seemed far too substantial for a minor role.

With decades of film and TV under his belt – from Alias and Damages to Argo and Titanic – and with an open schedule, we felt his veteran experience paired with Amell’s broad appeal and their combined fanbase could have the makings of a solo series. When appearing in flashback, Amell showed that his cousin (and Arrow) star Stephen Amell wasn’t the reason he had nabbed the part, but the show’s most recent episode allowed the actor to cast off his Garber impersonation, separating ‘Firestorm’ into its component parts/actors.
The result largely confirmed both sides of the equation: Amell is at least as capable of holding the spotlight as his Arrow kin, while Garber managed to play both an authority figure, a pizza-loving mentor, and a man as thrilled at the possibilities of time travel and crime-fighting as the audience.

If The Flash has proven anything, it’s that a charming cast with abundant chemistry is half the challenge of launching a modern comic series. With Amell’s current turn in The Duff proving that, in the words of our own Ben Kendrick, “the up-and-coming actor is more than just a TV heartthrob,” both he and Garber have taken to their respective roles noticeably quickly. Their starring episode – titled “Fallout” – will surely have fans wishing to see more of ‘Ronald’ and the Professor sooner, rather than later.

[h=2]The Science[/h]
With each new superhero comes a unique mythology, and Firestorm – or rather, F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. – is no exception. But in a truly devious turn, the writers of The Flash decided to deliver the sci-fi substance in a slow trickle over the course of The Flash‘s debut season. First came Ronnie’s ‘death’ after being vaporized in the particle accelerator meltdown, giving Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) her emotional arc for the first half of the season. But when a dishevelled, schizophrenic, fire-wielding Ronnie returned, fans’ curiosity was piqued.
With a single uttered word – “Firestorm” – both Caitlin and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) set out to uncover the mysterious project, essentially feeding viewers an explanation for Ronnie’s – and Martin Stein’s – fate. To guarantee that everyone understood the central conceit of the science behind ‘The Firestorm Matrix,’ it was offered in layman’s terms by Pied Piper: the two men had become one.

The core premise that two humans could combine into one (and remain permanently in sync mentally and physiologically as a result) isn’t too far out of The Flash‘s usual fiction, but the S.T.A.R. Labs team made sure to walk viewers through the science from day one. As a ‘walking nuclear bomb,’ two minds and bodies occupying the same space can not remain stable – not without a handy Splicer (and well-designed hint of a superhero uniform in-the-making).
Initially used to separate the two men, “Fallout” showed that the Splicer was the key to both men’s survival. Establishing the bond that links these two men forever, it is the Firestorm Matrix (apparently contained within their bloodstream) that draws them back to their union. Made possible without a catastrophic explosion by the Splicer, both men accepting their fate results in balance, the combined intelligence of both, and powers of fire. But fire is just the beginning.

The writers also made sure to plant seeds for the true potential of Firestorm, describing Professor Stein as an expert in transmutation a.k.a. the science of ‘making one substance into another.’ And perhaps most suspiciously, fails to explain just what the device was that Martin Stein was holding when the merge occurred.
The episode concludes by sending the duo to Pittsburgh (where both resided in comic canon) to learn more about their powers – powers that, if faithful to the source material, extend to all matter. That means not only blasts of energy and the gift of flight, but the ability to tear matter down to a molecular level and rebuild it.
It’s easy to see why a hero with control over elements and matter is a unique creature, and with audiences already well-versed in the science beneath it, even a return appearance wouldn’t be enough to capitalize on the potential – only a solo series could hope to. One forever bonded to The Flash in the CW universe, as the Firestorm insignia emblazoned on Ronnie’s chest is the same symbol used for the particle accelerator that forged the two men into one.
