THE FLASH Now Set To Be Introduced In His Own Pilot Rather Than Episode 20 Of ARROW

Barry Allen's debut in episodes 8 and 9 of Arrow has been so well received by the CW that they've now decided to scrap plans for The Flash to make his debut in episode 20 of that series, instead committing to telling his origin story fully in his very own pilot. Read on for details!

Deadline have revealed that there has been a change of plans for The Flash's small screen debut. While Grant Gustin will still make an appearance as Barry Allen in a two-part episode of Arrow a couple of weeks from now, "the CW has opted to film a traditional standalone Flash pilot instead of doing a backdoor pilot as Episode 20 of Arrow. With Episodes 8 and 9 serving as an origin story, the plan was for The Flash character to make his debut — red costume and all — in Arrow‘s Episode 20. He will now do it in the pilot." Bosses at the network were apparently extremely impressed with episodes 8 and 9, and this is clearly a sign that they have faith in a live-action series featuring Gustin. The obvious advantage here is that the team behind the episode (Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, Geoff Johns and David Nutter) now have chance to tell the story of Barry's transformation into The Flash in it entirety. It may also help keep the grounded world of Arrow away from superpowers for the time being.

[h=1]‘Ghostbuster’ Ernie Hudson Could Join ‘The Flash’ TV Series[/h]

When we first heard about the inclusion of Barry Allen a.k.a. The Flash (Grant Gustin) on Arrow season 2, there was some question as to whether or not the character – a lighthearted superhero with quasi-magical super powers – could fit comfortably in the gritty, vaguely realistic universe created in Arrow season 1. Of course, that was before all the other crazy stuff was introduced in Arrow‘s second season (Black Canary, the league of assassins, super powers, and bad guys galore). Suffice it to say, Barry fit in just fine by the time he arrived.

Now that we know The Flash is officially getting its own pilot – instead of a backdoor pilot as was originally planned – we’re starting to get some news about what that might entail (character descriptions, interviews, et cetera). Today, we learned that Ernie Hudson is up for a role.

Hudson recently joined the Ghostbusters-related Cross the Streams podcast where he talked a bit about his upcoming projects. Here’s what he had to say (via CBM):

“In the meantime, there’s a spin-off of ‘Arrow’ called ‘Flash.’ I’m meeting the creators next week. So, I have to prepare for that. [I'm up for the role of] his adoptive dad – or the dad of – “

Hudson cut himself off for a moment, perhaps for fear of giving away too much information, before finally saying:

“[Barry Allen's] dad has a problem.”

Anyone who read our previous story about the Flash character descriptions likely already knows which character Ernie Hudson will be playing if he gets the part. Here’s the description in question, just in case you need a refresher:

DETECTIVE WEST – Late 40s to Early 50s – African American – Detective West is an honest, blue-collar cop who’s seen it all. A soulful, funny caring father to Iris, and a surrogate father to Barry, West came up through the foster system himself. He took in Barry after his mother’s murder and his father’s imprisonment. He believes in Barry and supports Barry’s efforts to prove his father’s innocence.”

For those who don’t know, Detective West is the father of Iris West, who, in the comics, went on to marry Barry Allen. She was also the aunt of Wally West (a.k.a. Kid Flash I a.k.a. The Flash III) and grandmother of Bart Allen (a.k.a. Impulse a.k.a. Kid Flash II a.k.a. The Flash IV). That’s a lot of Flashes.

While Ernie Hudson is best known for his role as Winston the fourth Ghostbuster in Ghostbustersand Ghostbusters 2, he’s also made a pretty solid career out of playing police officers a la Detective West – including Sergeant Albrecht in The Crow, Sergeant O’Malley in Airheads, DEA Agent Baxter in For Which He Stands, Detective Gresko in Best of the Best 4, Detective Glen Teal in Red Letters, Detective Ron Mills in Paper Bullets, Senior Deputy John Henry Barnes on 10-8, Detective Ridley on Desperate Housewives, Captain Frank on Private Practice, Captain Lubbock on Heroes, and the list goes on. Obviously, Detective West won’t be too much of a stretch for him.

Ernie Hudson in ‘The Crow’

As for the problem Barry Allen’s dad has, Barry spelled it out pretty clearly on Arrow: When he was a child, his mother was murdered by a “blur” (probably the Reverse Flash), and because the police don’t arrest homocidal blurs, Barry’s father was charged with the crime instead. Now, some 15 years later, Barry is working as a Criminal and Forensic Science Assistant for the Central City Police in hopes of finally solving her murder.

Fans of The Flash will doubtlessly recognize this origin story – murdered mother, incarcerated father, Reverse Flash’s involvement, et cetera – as the one Geoff Johns created for the Flash’s semi-reboot in Flash: Rebirth (2009-2010).

While some bemoaned Johns’ injection of grim-n’-gritty into the backstory of one of the last remaining superheroes whose parents deaths didn’t inspire him to don a mask, there’s no doubt that a little mystery works wonders for a serialized live-action show. And if the tone, whimsy, and leitmotif used in the Barry Allen episodes of Arrow are anything to go by, the producers are heading down the right path already.
What say you, Screen Ranters? Are you looking forward to seeing Ernie Hudson as Detective West in The Flash TV show?

_____
The Flash will probably debut in fall 2014. We’ll keep you apprised of any new information as it becomes available.

David Nutter to Direct Pilot Episode for The Flash

David Nutter, the director of the pilots for Arrow, Smallville and the Red Wedding episode of Game of Thrones, is set to direct the pilot episode for CW's The Flash.

While speaking with The Directors Guild of America, David Nutter, the director of the pilots for Arrow, Smallville and the Red Wedding episode of Game of Thrones, revealed that he would be directing the pilot episode for The CW's Flash pilot. Nutter also talked about his history with comic books.

"My father died when I was a year-and-a-half old and my mother raised me as a single parent. I lived in West Virginia and the one thing I used to do as a child was buy comic books. I would cut out the characters, and their angles, and how they looked and so forth, and create my own characters for these stories. I’d have Captain America, or Iron Man, or The Flash, or Superman, and I’d create my own stories."

[h=1]Law & Order's Jesse L. Martin Cast in CW's Flash[/h] [h=2]The seasoned crime show actor trades in one badge for another.[/h]
Late last year, we reported that Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson was up for a role in CW's Flash spin-off series. That role was Detective West, an honest, caring cop and surrogate father to Barry Allen (the Flash). Today, it was announced that the role has gone to a different actor.
According to Deadline, Jesse L. Martin will play the detective. It's a role that fits perfectly in Martin's wheelhouse considering that he played Detective Ed Green for nine years on NBC's long-running crime series Law & Order. There is still no word on who will play Detective West's daughter and Barry Allen's love interest, Iris West.

Jesse L. Martin in Law & Order.

Flash was originally planned to begin with a backdoor pilot in the current season of Arrow, but CW execs were positive enough to give the spin-off its own pilot. Network president Mark Pedowitz believes a standalone pilot will allow Flash to "start off with a bang the way Arrow did."

[h=1]‘The Flash’ TV Show Casts Reverse-Flash & Killer Frost[/h]

[WARNING: This article contains POTENTIAL SPOILERS for The Flash TV series.]
-

Spoiler: show
DC’s big-screen universe may be stalled for now – than again, maybe not – but its television universe established by The CW’s hit series Arrow is going strong, with its return from mid-season hiatus carrying the subplot that will spin off into The Flash standalone pilot.

With Glee‘sGrant Gustin in the lead as Central City CSI Barry Allen, The Flash‘s pilot has added Law & Order alum Jesse L. Martin as Barry’s surrogate father Detective West, and as expected, we now have news of even more cast additions.

According to Deadline, Rick Cosnett (The Vampire Diaries) and Danielle Panabaker (Shark) have joined the pilot’s cast. Cosnett will play Detective Eddie Thawne, described as “a recent transfer to the Central City Police Department, whose past is a mystery and who harbors a dark secret.”

Panabaker’s character is Caitlin Snow, “a highly intelligent bioengineering expert who lost her fiancé during an explosion at S.T.A.R. Labs.” Murky histories, dark secrets, and haunted pasts – this sure sounds like a CW superhero show.

The casting of Cosnett – who has a recurring role as Dr. Wes Maxfield on The Vampire Diaries - follows the CW’s pattern of placing the network’s established faces into other properties. They did the same with Arrow star Stephen Amell, who had short runs on both The Vampire Diaries and 90210. Panabaker has been a familiar face on television with roles on The Glades and Necessary Roughness, and has appeared in genre films such as the Friday the 13th and The Crazies.

Rick Cosnett & Danielle Panabaker

Perhaps most interesting, though, are the characters – Eddie Thawne is almost certainly a variation on Eobard Thawne, who in the comics goes by the codenames Professor Zoom and Reverse-Flash. The Reverse-Flash is arguably’ The Flash’s greatest enemy, a man from the future with all the powers of The Flash and similar fashion sense (he wears the same costume, albeit primarily yellow with hints of red; hence, “Reverse”-Flash) who is determined to ruin Barry Allen’s life. He’s also responsible for murdering Allen’s mother via time travel, which will likely be a large part of the plot of the new series.

Likewise, in the comics, Caitlin Snow was a scientist whose body was accidentally fused with ice, which transformed her into Killer Frost. She’s basically a “heat vampire” who can, for some reason, turn heat into cold. Her entire body is covered in ice and she can also create deadly ice projectiles and instantly freeze anyone she comes into contact with.

The initial character descriptions for the TV versions of Flash characters Detective West and Iris West led some to believe that The Flash would not be quite as dark and broody as Arrow, but the addition of more characters with painful backstories – with this version of Barry Allen already obsessed with solving the murder of his parents – may negate some of the source material’s more colorful, fantastical and somewhat lighthearted elements.

That is, unless the creative team behind the pilot are aiming for a blend of Arrow‘s Christopher Nolan-influenced dark tone with some of the lighter elements of the Flash’s universe. Arrow co-creators Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti have said that they intend both shows to be as distinctive as possible, so expect the Flash’s adventures in Central City to deal with themes and issues similar to Arrow while keeping a somewhat more buoyant tone.

The casting announcements for The Flash are sure to keep coming, so stay tuned for more.

[h=1]The Flash Adds Iris West and Vibe[/h] [h=2]The Flash gets a love interest and, possibly, a helping hand.[/h]
Casting for The Flash is picking up steam. After the casting of Detective West and two villains last month, Grant Gustin's Barry Allen now has a love interest and a fellow superhero.
Deadline reports that Candice Patton (The Game) has been cast as Iris West, "Allen’s fast-talking, quick-witted best friend who is also the daughter of Detective West [Jesse L. Martin], who serves as a surrogate father to Barry."

Candice Patton in The Game.

The site also reports that Broadway's Carlos Valdes, currently starring in the musical Once, will join the show as Cisco Ramon, "a mechanical engineering genius and the youngest member of the team of scientists at STAR Labs." In the comics, Francisco "Paco" Ramon becomes Vibe, a superhero who creates shockwaves with powerful vibrations.
Looks like CW's somewhat grounded DC universe is about to explode with metahumans.

[h=1]How ‘The Flash’ TV Show Will Differ from ‘Arrow’[/h]

With Arrow in its second season and only growing in popularity, the time is ripe for DC to capitalize and add to their burgeoning TV universe. Late last summer, it was announced Arrow producers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim were developing a new series for The CW based on The Flash, with the intention being to introduce him on Arrow season 2 before he appears in his own series next fall.

Barry Allen made his debut (played by Grant Gustin) in the Arrow season 2 two-episode arc – “The Scientist” and “Three Ghosts – and CW execs were so happy with it that they scrapped plans for a backdoor pilot and gave the go ahead for a full pilot instead. Since then, we’ve seen a bunch of casting announcements (Reverse-Flash, Iris West, Vibe, etc.) and now we’re hearing from the showrunner about what we can expect from the new superhero series.

Talking with Digital Spy, showrunner Berlanti talked about how The Flash will differ from Arrow by contrasting the series’ stars:

“Barry is different from Oliver (Stephen Amell). He’s a man of science and has more of a sci-fi bent, whereas Arrow has a bit more of a crime bent.
“We often talk about how Oliver comes off like a pessimist, but deep down he’s an optimist and has hope. Barry lost his mother at a very young age, his father was sent to prison for murdering his mom, he went through a lot of stuff – on the surface he’s bubbly and upbeat and seems like an optimist, but deep down maybe there’s no hope left.
“So they’re a really nice contrast to each other and the show functions in that way, I think. Certainly in the pilot script Barry has an effervescence and a lightness, but there’s still a dark well beneath that.”

Barry and Oliver were a bit at odds during their first meeting. Mostly because Oliver didn’t find Barry serious enough for crime work and didn’t approve of the flirtatiousness between him and Felicity (whom Oliver has grown very protective of).

There’s been no official word on whether or not we’ll see Barry appear again on Arrow before season 2 is through or if Oliver will guest star on The Flash. Though seeing as how they want to build these series into a shared universe, having characters travel back and forth between Starling City and Central City seems a given.

From the beginning, Arrow was meant to be a more grounded look at DC’s emerald archer, and for the most part, super powers have been used in a limited capacity. The Flash series, however, will have super powers in play from the get go.

Berlanti hints at S.T.A.R. Labs playing a larger role in The Flash:

“We’ve talked a lot on ‘Arrow’ about the particle collider and Harrison Wells and S.T.A.R. Labs and so you’ll see S.T.A.R. Labs as an active part of the show.”

Might they be the source of the growing population of superpowered heroes and villains?

Whether The Flash gets picked up for a series or not, Gustin will remain Barry Allen for Berlanti:

“Fingers crossed we don’t screw it up and he gets his own show! If he didn’t, I don’t think we would ever want to let Grant go. He’s too valuable. That would be our hope, I think – no matter what, to keep Barry part of the universe.”

It took almost the entirety of Arrow‘s first season for fans to warm up and accept Stephen Amell’s more modern spin on Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, but Gustin seemed to win over audiences pretty quickly. Hopefully that excitement over seeing Barry Allen on Arrow will spill over to when Gustin first appears as the crimson speedster on his own series.

How did you feel about Gustin’s portrayal of Barry on Arrow? Did it make you more or less excited for The Flash getting his own series on the CW? And how do you think the more sci-fi Flash series will stack up against the more crime-oriented Arrow?

There's A Plan B For Grant Gustin's FLASH Should Series Fail

Greg Berlanti, the Executive Producer of Arrow and Flash, says he has a plan B for Grant Gustin's Flash if the fastest man alive's solo TV series fails to grab an audience or get picked up. Plus more on Felicity's involvement in Barry's life. Read on for more!

In an interview with Digital Spy, Greg Berlanti (executive producer of Arrow and Flash) lets us know that he has a plan B should plan A for Grant Gustin's FLASH fail to grab an audience or get picked up this fall.

"Fingers crossed we don't screw it up and he gets his own show!" he joked. "If he didn't, I don't think we would ever want to let Grant go. He's too valuable. That would be our hope, I think - no matter what, to keep Barry part of the universe."

So Barry will be returning to Starling City as a series regular on Arrow if Flash doesn't do well. He also hints that Barry and Felicity's chemistry will be explored in great detail and that Felicity will make frequent guest appearances on the Flash TV show. With the recent revival of Sara and Oliver's romance, Olicity has taken a back seat in Arrow's remaining season 2. Thus, opening up the opportunity for Felicity to move to central city for a brief arc.

Original '90s TV 'Barry Allen' John Wesley Shipp Joins THE FLASH

That's right, the man who played Barry Allen/The Flash in CBS' short-lived '90s series is set to return to Central City as part of the upcoming CW series which will see Grant Gustin play the Scarlet Speedster. Who will be playing?

It has been revealed today that John Wesley Shipp - the actor who played Barry Allen/The Flash in the cult classic '90s series - will guest star in The CW's upcoming Arrow spin-off. As of right now, his role is a mystery, although it's thought that it will become a recurring part if The Flash is ordered to series. My bet? Barry Allen's imprisoned father. Grant Gustin will play the titular hero, with Candice Patton (Iris West), Jesse L. Martin (Detective West), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Roman), Daniele Panabaker (Caitlin Snow), Rick Cosnett (Detective Eddie Thawne) and Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells) all joining him. Who do you think Shipp will be playing in the series?
