Sony PlayStation 5 : Play Has No Limits

PS5 Release Date, PS5 Games, PS5 Power vs Xbox One X, PS5 Price Speculation - All the PS5 Info lets discuss

Here are all the rumors and speculation surrounding the PS5, including a potential PS5 release date, power, and launch games of Sony's inevitable PS5. Is the PS5 releasing in 2019?

What we Want From the PS5 Speculation aside, what would we ideally want from the PS5? Backwards compatibility for PS4 games would be brilliant, simply because you'd be able to carry over classics like the Shadow of the Colossus remake to the next console generation. We've seen how well Microsoft is handling backwards compatibility with its Xbox One consoles (including getting amazing results updating Xbox 360 games to run in 4K on Xbox One X), and something similar on PS5 would be great.

In terms of pure power, the PlayStation 5 has to significantly exceed the power of the Xbox One X. This means featuring more games running in 4K at 60FPS. If the PS5 can deliver about 10 TF of power we'd be happy, as this would allow devs to create games that look a generation ahead of what we've got now.

But what would the dream launch lineup be for the PS5? Death Stranding and The Last of Us: Part 2 are hugely anticipated blockbuster games, with the former especially looking to push the performance of whatever system it's on to the very limit. We've also mentioned Ghost of Tsushima and a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, and the latter would be the perfect way to kick off a new console cycle from Sony.

Every thing looks believable except for the SSD part. They are just too expensive imo...it might have a dual setup like a 10 gb SSD for system and 1tb HDD for games

[h=1]A Little Evidence PlayStation 5 Might be Backward Compatible[/h]

A new patent filed by Sony could suggest that the PlayStation 5 will have backward compatibility. Before the release of the current generation of consoles, backward compatibility was fairly common as newer consoles could play older games. However, Sony abandoned the idea by the time it released the PlayStation 4. The Xbox One didn't have backward compatibility at launch either.
Microsoft eventually realized the importance of backward compatibility, though. Xbox initially rolled out the feature in 2015 that made many Xbox and Xbox 360 games playable on the newer Xbox One. Although this feature went over well with gamers, Sony never got around to doing the same on the PlayStation 4. As it stands, games cannot play PlayStation 3 titles on the PS4. Instead, Sony began offering PlayStation Now as a subscription service that lets players stream specific older titles on the PS4 and PC, although players can also download specific PS2 and PS4 titles directly to their PS4 consoles. With rumors suggesting the PlayStation 5 will be announced in 2019, with a launch in 2020, most analysts believe that the new console absolutely must have backward compatibility.

Sony recently filed a new patent that could mean the PS5 will have backward compatibility. According to
Twinfinite, the patent outlines a way for a device to check to see if an application is meant for an older device. If so, the device's processor then adjusts itself accordingly so that it can run the older application, basically giving the device backward compatibility. What's most interesting about the patent, though, is it lists Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS4, as its inventor. Cerny's name attached to the patent suggests it is relevant to the PS5.

Although a patent application is hardly confirmation the PS5 will have backward compatibility, it is a sign that Sony is possibly considering it for something. The company has recently filed other patents, too, that could point to PlayStation 5 features. One patent outlines a new VR controller, while another defines a touchscreen controller design.
Sony still has a year or two to figure out what features the PS5 will have. In the meantime, developers have quietly started developing games for the new console. The PS4 just celebrated its fifth anniversary, which means that it's winding down toward the end of its life cycle. Although it still has a lot of exclusive titles set for release in 2019, the future of PlayStation is right around the corner with the PlayStation 5.

Backward compatibility gives the users edge to play the titles which missed due to any reason and gives resale to the older games

100% sure both of the consoles will be backwards compatible this time. It will be foolish not to.

It takes some time for a new console to boast an attractive line up of games. Backward compatibility could also persuade existing PS4 users to start playing their PS4 games on PS5 until a good number of PS5 titles show up. Sony may have to let go of new remasters in that case but they would still be able to make money from remakes of classics.

This is probably the most 'official' information we're gonna get on this until the actual announcement, Wired's article about the PS5 plans and then re-tweeted by the PS twitter itself.

Looks like the leaked specs were fairly accurate. Glad to see the current PSVR headset will be supported on the new console. As for ray-tracing, not particularly interested in the tech. It's the new hurdle in the way of 60fps becoming more of a norm (on PS4, it was the weaker CPU), and therefore I hope it's optional.

They haven't talked about memory yet. Hoping it's around 12-16gb of gddr6 or hbm2 RAM.

Extremely fast high-end SSD storage
Every thing looks believable except for the SSD part.
Do you believe it now? :p

lol @ ray-tracing support. What a waste of R&D resources /s

Only hurdle is developers themselves prioritizing prettier visuals. Those who wanted to prioritize 60FPS managed to work around the limitations.

Do you believe it now? :p
What do they mean by extremely fast here though? Are we talking NVMe based or the significantly slower SATA based SSDs? The former will make higher storage options quite expensive.

Not always, as the mid-gen refresh consoles have demonstrated. A stable 60fps was often held back by the complexity of what went on at the CPU side.

Ray-tracing is a taxing graphical feature that takes a significant toll on GPU performance, so the option to toggle it off in PS5 games in order to achieve higher frame rates would be welcome.

It's nice to have options. I'm sure you wouldn't disagree :p

Going by Cerny's talk of achieving fast travel in Spiderman in 0.8 seconds, it may well be NVMe based, or some cheaper hybrid solution. Either way, SSDs getting closer to becoming a standard for all platforms is great for the industry.

Disregard my previous statement about ps5 not having an SSD. They have gotten a hell lot of cheaper this year! I picked up a 256gb adata one for only 40$! Latest model too! The 500gigs flagships models are even cheaper for like 75$! Just a year ago these prices were unimaginable for me. Although I still believe next gen console will have a hybrid solution of SSD plus HDD cause game sizes are exploding man. Next gen games 150+gb will probably the norm.

Sony mid-gen refresh was poorly specced. Barely a worthwhile upgrade imo.

You were talking about 60FPS becoming more common. The norm will still be 30fps games, regardless of ray-tracing support. Do you expect Naughty Dog to aim for 60fps and fail again mid-development (like with Uncharted 4 lol) or Polyphony Digital to drop down to 30FPS for the next Gran Turismo because of ray-tracing? I doubt it.

Either way, SSDs getting closer to becoming a standard for all platforms is great for the industry.
It's about time, PS4/Xbox One were outdated on arrival. I mean SSDs were commercially available about the same time as the PS3 launched lol

If the SSD in PS5 is actually "high-end" like the tweet says, I expect nothing less than the highest performing NVMe based SSD ie. 3500MB/s Read speed. Remains to be seen if the user will be able to upgrade this due to the nature of the interface; likely not.

The only other question is how much storage can they provide in their price target? If its $399, I expect a lower performing NVMe SSD (1,500-2500MB/s). Which is still a nice upgrade in itself but not what I'd call 'high end'.

If ND is targeting 30fps for their first PS5 game w/ a ray-traced GI solution, the option to toggle it off and replace it with an alternate GI solution would certainly give it a performance boost. On the user end, this will probably be termed as a "favor graphics/favor performance" setting.

The CPU played a big role in them not being able to achieve 60fps for Uncharted 4's single-player mode. They did it for the multiplayer by reducing CPU workload (lowering the quality of physics and almost entirely getting rid of destruction). Model quality was also reduced, but a lot of the graphical features were retained.

If the SSD in PS5 is actually "high-end" like the tweet says
The article gives further details on the matter.

To demonstrate, Cerny fires up a PS4 Pro playing Spider-Man, a 2018 PS4 exclusive that he worked on alongside Insomniac Games. (He’s not just an systems architect; Cerny created arcade classic Marble Madness when he was all of 19 and was heavily involved with PlayStation and PS2 franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Ratchet and Clank.) On the TV, Spidey stands in a small plaza. Cerny presses a button on the controller, initiating a fast-travel interstitial screen. When Spidey reappears in a totally different spot in Manhattan, 15 seconds have elapsed. Then Cerny does the same thing on a next-gen devkit connected to a different TV. (The devkit, an early “low-speed” version, is concealed in a big silver tower, with no visible componentry.) What took 15 seconds now takes less than one: 0.8 seconds, to be exact.

That’s just one consequence of an SSD. There’s also the speed with which a world can be rendered, and thus the speed with which a character can move through that world. Cerny runs a similar two-console demonstration, this time with the camera moving up one of Midtown’s avenues. On the original PS4, the camera moves at about the speed Spidey hits while web-slinging. “No matter how powered up you get as Spider-Man, you can never go any faster than this,” Cerny says, “because that's simply how fast we can get the data off the hard drive.” On the next-gen console, the camera speeds uptown like it’s mounted to a fighter jet. Periodically, Cerny pauses the action to prove that the surrounding environment remains perfectly crisp. (While the next-gen console will support 8K graphics, TVs that deliver it are few and far between, so we’re using a 4K TV.)
I don't expect a low performing NVMe SSD to load up fast travel in Spiderman in 0.8 seconds.

Why not? PS4 has roughly 300MB/s read speed. Even a lower performing NVMe speed is anywhere between 1500MB/s-2500MB/s. There are other factors to consider here as well, mainly game engine and the accessing a travel point from the cache. The lower times will not be same across all games.

Necrokiller Nvme Ssds are hardly any faster than Sata Ssds during game loadings, merely 1-3 seconds difference.

You can check benchmarks for Sata and Nvme Ssds on google.

Nvme Ssds are better for higher data moving etc.

So, imo, simple Sata Ssds are enough for next gen consoles, and are cheaper than Nvme.

Is that the Pro's read speed? Base PS4 has a SATA-2 interface vs the Pro's SATA-3. Load times are notably quicker on the latter, which was used in the Spiderman comparison.

Yeah I don't think it's NVMe; that would be too expensive. It's probably more of a custom solution based on SATA SSDs.
