Yeah I don't think it's NVMe; that would be too expensive. It's probably more of a custom solution based on SATA SSDs.

I don't think every sentence in the article should be taken at face value, a lot of it reads like PR speak, eg "highest fidelity textures" on the XBX reveal, where as in reality, we've only seen 2, 3 games since it's release which maybe have actual higher resolution textures over base Xbox One, let alone PS4 Pro.

SSD, sure. But "High-end SSD" is what I'm talking about. Maybe they just meant to say high speed storage, aka *any* SSD over a normal mechanical drive.

I dont know... "Extremely fast" "high end" is quite a deliberate choice of words for the first time revealing specs of your next gen console.

And 15x faster than Pro in their test case? Nothings getting lost in translation here.

Like I already said, SSD is the surprise here.

But there's always one genuine surprise when it comes to a next-gen console specs reveal and in the case of the Sony next-gen console reveal, that's the nature of the storage solution the platform holder is employing.

It's said that the new PlayStation's SSD has bandwidth that exceeds the best that the PC has to offer. To put that into perspective, a top-tier NVMe drive like the Samsung 970 Pro achieves sustained sequential read/writes of 3.5GB/s and 2.5GB/s respectively. To better that in a console would be a revelation.

SSD's have gotten shockingly cheap in some places. I picked up a 250GB (or was it 150 ? I forgot) for a relative's laptop from Amazon for $24.99 a few months ago near the start of the year.

Eh. I, personally, don't believe the specific part about the super high speed SSD until I see some actual examples in the reveal/whatever they do.

I'm *far* more excited about the confirmed PS4 backward compatibility. Incredibly easy trade-in of my Pro for a PS5 if this holds true.

This was expected ever since they announced Pro. But the PS5 is probably going to cost $499. High speed memory and SSDs are not cheap.

Hybrid SSDs already exist. Smaller NVMe combined with larger but slower SSD is probably what they are hinting at.

The chart *does* include both stock PS4 and Pro drives. Just cause 3 is, for some reason, slower on the Pro but every other game has a 1 to 12 second advantage.

Yeah it wont be uniform across all games. The fast travel scenario, comparable to Spiderman scenario, in Witcher 3, is only 2 secs faster. Project CARs is basically the same. Just Cause 3 faster on base PS4.

Some of these times are ridiculously long (even for Skyrim) and I'm really glad I invested in a USB SSD for my Pro when I bought it, lol. The difference is tremendous. I remember I tested Arkham Knight as the first game and loading times were halved from the stock drive.
