Official GTA 4 (PC) Thread

It just like pauses for a few seconds. I bought it from Islamabad. I am playing it at 1280*1024 res, everything on max. I am getting 34fps. Every thing latest is installed. I was runnig this game on " 4850 + C2D E8200" it was running smoothly. But when I changed my graphics card to 4870 this problem occurs.

try updating ur drivers. That can solve this issue i beleive.

defrag your hard drive. Most probably there are some bad sectors in your hard drive.
& Check your CPU usage too while playing GTA4. & can you post a GPUz screenshot here ... showing the temperatures?

I have done all these methods but not getting the desire result. Temperature is not an issue. My CPU usage was 68%.

Which PSU do you have? You might be getting poor performance due to lack of power.

Post a screenshot of the settings you are using in GTA 4. Let me remind you, if you have CRANKED up all the bars to 100 or whatever their limit, then you are getting 10 times better quality than a console....and 34fps is VERY reasonable in that case.

Texture Quality High
Reflection Quality Very High
Water Quality Very High
Shadow Quality High
Texture Filter Quality Highest
View Distance 40
Detail Distance 100
Shadow Density 16
Vehicle Density 30
Defination ON
VSync ON

But the problem isn't that I am getting lower framerate, I have also got the framerate of 50,51,53. But the problem is that it hangs up for few seconds.

Turn OFF Vsync. Did it use to hang up with your previous setup as well? Those specs are quite high...esp detail distance = 100 is wayyy too much.

I used to play it with same specs with my previous setup i.e. HIS HD 4850, Intel Core 2 Duo E8200, it was running very smoothly on my previous setup. But this problem occured when i changed my graphics card to HIS HD 4870 ICEQ 4+ Turbo.

And now you seemed to have changed the E8200 to Q8200? Is that correct? Because I thought GTA 4 favored Quad-Core CPUs...so that is strange as well.

You most probably did not uninstall the previous drivers correctly before you installed this card. Did you run a software like Driver Sweeper? Went into safe mode and deleted all the files and THEN installed the new latest drivers? That conflicting driver could be causing the slow downs.

There is no way in hell your performance would degrade on the SAME settings by UPGRADING your video card.

Yes you are right. I upgraded from E8200 to Q8200 due to this problem only. But still have same problem. As far as your next question is that I might have not uninstalled previous drivers is that i refresh my whole window after installing new card.

Any chance you are mistaken that you were getting higher frames before? Because it is impossible for that to happen since you upgraded both your CPU and GPU.

Maybe some background processes are slowing it down? Anti Virus or something? Did you install it on the same hard drive as before? My frames were low when I installed it on IDE but increased greatly when I installed it on SATAII.

Are other games slower than before as well? Or is it just GTA 4? That way you can rule out that your hardware is faulty or not.

My other games like crysis warhead, Far cry 2 etc. have been boosted up but gta iv has a unique kind of problem

I think I might be the only one who didn't experience any bugs with GTA 4, thats why I can't think of anything else at the moment. Because the problem is now definitely with the game and not the hardware.

No problem. I still think turning OFF Vsync would boost the frames alot.

i had the same problem with a few games , i turned the virus scanner off and the problem was gone..
