[h=1]‘Daredevil’ Showrunner Talks Easter Eggs, Season 2, Frank Miller Inspiration & More[/h]

Fans of all things Marvel can look forward to the studio’s long-term plans for their Cinematic Universe, with their television offerings poised to fill in the gap until the May 2015 release of The Avengers: Age of Ultron. We’re currently in the middle of a robust, re-energized second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., with the Hayley Atwell-starring Agent Carter premiering during the AoS midseason break.

Meanwhile, down on street-level, the first of five interconnected Netflix series, Daredevil, is set to premiere sometime in 2015. The show has been filming on location in New York throughout the summer of 2014, and while saw the first official images and early footage at NYCC and heard about the “much darker” tone from star Charlie Cox, the big picture has so far been kept under wraps.

Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight took to Twitter on Halloween 2014 to answer fan questions and confirm that we won’t see Bullseye on season 1, among other choice details. Now, DeKnight has once again used a holiday as an opportunity to engage with the fan community for another Twitter Q&A, this time as he prepares to direct the Daredevil finale.

Here is a breakdown of what DeKnight revealed, followed by some of the key tweets:

  • While the black, ninja-like costume is reminiscent of Frank Miller and John Romita, Jr.’s influential ‘Man Without Fear’ miniseries, this incarnation of the superhero is not directly based on that source material. Rather, it’s “just drawing inspiration” from it.
  • Though there’s no official word on whether or not Daredevil will have any more seasons beyond the first, DeKnight said there “probably will be more.”
  • We will not be seeing the other Netflix shows, such as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, in 2015.
  • Fans should expect a lot of Easter Eggs when the full season premieres. Some will be obvious, others more obscure.
  • DeKnight side-steps the question of whether or not The Punisher could show up in Daredevil by saying he’d love to write and direct a Punisher movie.
  • Lastly, he stated that he’d like to include Wilbur Day A.K.A. Stilt-Man in the show if he could.

The inclusion of a great deal of Easter Eggs is kind of a given, since this Daredevil universe is an extension of the one established by the MCU and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sincethe “street-level noir” world of The Defenders is one unlikely to include cameos by characters like Iron Man or Thor, the use of strategic allusions to the larger MCU will most likely be kept out of the way of the main storyline, for the most part.

These details are fun to pour over, and if DeKnight is planning to use holidays as a means for sharing even more, we can possibly look forward to another round on Christmas Day… but we still don’t know much more than we did a month ago. The only things here that resemble “official” info are the hint that we’ll be seeing a second season and the flat denial that any of the follow-up Netflix shows will debut in 2015.

The wording of DeKnight’s Punisher reply invites speculation, even if he might be teasing about including the recurring Daredevil arch-foe Stilt-Man. We’ve explained why Frank Castle/Punisher is a character who deserves his own TV show, and a recent, seemingly offhand line of dialogue on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. contained a sly reference to one of the character’s supporting players. (And let’s not forget the theory about The Punisher appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.)

Daredevil has plenty of world-building in its own right, with the other Netflix shows expected to tie in to the Man Without Fear’s initial outing, but might we expect one of Daredevil‘s later episodes to set up a potential Punisher origin story? As the MCU becomes more and more cosmic in scope and with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter likely to focus on global threats, tracking the street-level crime-fighting from the unique perspective of The Punisher would provide a fascinating contrast to the super-powered nobility of characters like Thor and Captain America.

What do you think, Screen Ranters? Are you looking forward to Daredevil and the surprises in store?

[h=1]‘Daredevil’ Series Will Be a ‘Crime Drama First’; New Image Revealed[/h]

Marvel Studios and ABC’s television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is half-way through its second season, but has already opened the door to new parts of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Similarly, Daredevil – the first of the four New York-based Marvel superheroes series planned to premiere on Netflix (not counting their planned team-up miniseries, The Defenders) – will explore the crime-fighting life on city streets in a way that no Marvel project released thus far has.

Daredevil show-runner Steven DeKnight is familiar with the sort of creative freedom that comes with making a Netflix series (he also created the very adult Spartacus TV series for Starz), though in a new interview he re-emphasized that his Marvel show is going for a tone that’s not quite R-Rated. Similarly, Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb is sticking with his past claim that Daredevil won’t just be the small screen equivalent of your average Marvel superhero film.

Loeb, speaking with EW, re-emphasized what Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has said before, about how Daredevil is more a grounded crime series where the protagonist is a costume-wearing vigilante; as opposed to, a more fantastical superhero adventure.

‘There aren’t going to be people flying through the sky; there are no magic hammers. We’ve always approached this as a crime drama first, superhero show second.”

That approach is in keeping with the influence of Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.’s “The Man Without Fear” Daredevil comic book mini-series published in the 1990s, which DeKnight has likewise acknowledged as being a significant influence (though he says the show is not at all a direct adaptation). So much can also be observed in the first costume that’s donned by Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) on the series, which was unveiled during the 2014 New York Comic-Con and is also pictured in a newly-released official Daredevil still, below. (Don’t worry, Murdock will get to wear his red, devil-horned, outfit on the show at some point.)

Daredevil footage shown at NYCC 2014 (listen to our editors describe it on the Screen Rant Underground podcast) resembled that of a hard-boiled crime tale, albeit with superheroes living in its neo-Noir world. Daredevil may not reach the same level of “mature entertainment” as DeKnight’s Spartacus series or other Netflix shows (like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards), but there was definitely a Dark Knight-esque quality to the Comic-Con preview.

As DeKnight told EW:
”It’s a little grittier and edgier than Marvel has gone before, but we’re not looking to push it to extreme violence or gratuitous nudity.”

The casting for Daredevil alone is pretty impressive, with Cox joined by the likes of Vincent D’Onofrio as Daredevil’s enemy, Wilson Fisk a.k.a. Kingpin, as well as Rosario Dawson, True Blood alum Deborah Ann Woll, and Scott Glenn in key recurring and/or supporting roles. Marvel is getting its Jessica Jones Netflix series ready to go (with a star and show-runner in place) after Daredevil next year, so here’s to hoping this trip to Hell’s Kitchen starts off well.

[h=1]‘Daredevil’ Showrunner & Star Tease Villain Love Story, and More[/h]

In 2015, Marvel Studios will be continuing its storyline concerning Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers: Age of Ultron as well as introducing Ant-Man to the cinematic universe. On the television side, Marvel is also expanding. Agent Carter will premiere on ABC and run during the midseason break of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which will pick up its second season after an impactful (and far-reaching) midseason finale.

Aside from those on ABC, two other Marvel TV series will debut on Netflix: Daredevil and A.K.A. Jessica Jones. From showrunner Steven S. DeKnight, crime drama Daredevil will be the first of the Netflix series to premiere. Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) stars as Matt Murdock, a blind defense attorney based in New York City who doubles as a masked vigilante. In a recent interview, DeKnight and Cox, along with head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb, discussed the characters of Daredevil.

While talking to EW, DeKnight revealed that Daredevil will focus on the titular character as well as the show’s antagonist Wilson Fisk a.k.a. Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. DeKnight said Fisk’s character development will be fleshed out and include the story of how he fell in love with his wife; you can read the showrunner’s full quote, below:

“Fisk has very many different aspects so it’s not all, ‘I want to conquer the city and make a lot of money.’ In our story, we tell the story of how he met his wife Vanessa and how they fell in love – our antagonist actually has a love story. That’s the love story you’re following, the one you’re invested in, and seeing how that affects him and changes him. I think Vincent just brings such depth to it, his performance is just astounding.”

The series will be about the rise of both a hero and a villain, as Loeb said, so viewers can expect a fully developed villain in Daredevil. Some criticisms of Marvel films have centered around the villains – particularly that many, such as the Dark Elves in Thor: the Dark World, were underdeveloped. However, it appears DeKnight is attempting to avoid those problems with Daredevil.
On the topic of whether or not other comic book villains would appear in the series, DeKnight previously shot down the idea that Bullseye would have a role in the first season. Now, DeKnight has said “it’s not not to say he wouldn’t be in the series at some point.” In the Ben Affleck-starring Daredevil movie, Bullseye was the main adversary and DeKnight didn’t want to rehash the villain’s story – or cram too many antagonists into one season.

As for the hero of the show, Cox revealed that Daredevil’s title as the “man without fear” will have a less literal meaning in the Marvel television series. This is because, according to Cox, a man without fear wouldn’t have much character development and wouldn’t be compelling to watch.

Read Cox’s full quote:

“Someone who does not have fear – literally does not experience fear – is not that interesting. The way I like to think about it is that he is a man with fear, but he on a daily basis decides to confront that fear and to overcome it. So the title of ‘the man without fear’ is almost a title that the public in his world gives him just because of what he does. But inside himself, he’s very afraid at times. And he finds a way to confront those fears and punch through it.”

Although Marvel has become well-known for its superhero blockbusters, on the television side – especially with these Netflix series – it appears the studio is focusing more on character than action. In Daredevil, Murdock and Fisk will be at the center of the series’ first season. Whether or not these characters can sustain the show on their own remains to be seen, but it seems Cox and DeKnight are confident in their hero/villain story.

[h=1]‘Daredevil’ Showrunner Talks Black Costume and ‘PG-16′ Rating[/h]

Manhattan may have borne the brunt of Loki’s ambition during the final battle of The Avengers, but Hell’s Kitchen isn’t in much better shape thanks to the proliferation of crime and supervillains like The Kingpin. Luckily help is on the way in the form of Matt Murdock: lawyer by day, vigilante by night, and the eponymous protagonist of upcoming Netflix/Marvel TV team-up Daredevil.

The first of five Marvel shows that will be set in Hell’s Kitchen and cross over with one another, Daredevil has the responsibility of setting the tone for the future of Marvel on Netflix. No pressure. Boardwalk Empire actor Charlie Cox plays the lead, and the cast is rounded out by Vincent D’Onofrio, Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll and Rosario Dawson.

There’s been a lot of chatter over Daredevil’s costume, as featured in the trailer and the numerous promotional stills for the show. The character is most recognizable in a red suit with horns, but the TV version of the character will start out wearing a very conservative black outfit with a simple mask over the top half of his head. Speaking to Empire, showrunner Steven S. DeKnight explained that Matt simply doesn’t have the resources or skills to make a sophisticated costume when he first starts out; fine stitching doesn’t come easily to a blind man.

“Without giving too much away, this show is Matt learning to be a hero. He starts in that first iteration of the Daredevil outfit which is taken very much from Frank Miller and The Man Without Fear. But I always questioned [the main costume]. I mean, one, he’s blind. Did he stitch it together himself? How did he manage all that? So, actually getting him to that point I thought was really interesting.”

Costume designer Stephanie Maslansky offered more details on Daredevil’s crime-fighting outfit, including a promise that the classic red version will show up later on: “In the end, somebody else [in the story] makes his Daredevil costume. What’s really exciting is the evolution of it, and how he comes to have it made.” Who is this person that Matt will end up revealing his secret identity to in the show?

Charlie Cox and Steven S. DeKnight

The other contentious issue related to Daredevil is just how mature the show should be content-wise. BBFC ratings for the first three episodes warned of “strong, bloody violence” that should please some fans, but others have expressed concern that an R rated superhero would be out of place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, limiting the possibility of Daredevil appearing in any of the upcoming movies. DeKnight concedes that the show’s attachment to the Marvel Studios brand (and its parent company, Disney) has created a need to hold back a little.

“Netflix, of course, they don’t have a problem with pushing it. I mean, they go anywhere from G to NC-17. But the Marvel brand, that’s a little different. They’re obviously not comfortable going that far with it, though they’ve allowed us to push it much further than you’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since starting with Iron Man. It is much more geared towards adults. We call it PG-16. We don’t quite get to R, but we kiss right up to it.”

It will take more than just pushing the rating to make Daredevil a success, but luckily there are only a few weeks left to find out if Marvel and Netflix managed to kick off their partnership the right way.
Daredevil comes to Netflix on April 10th, 2015.

[h=1]Meet ‘Daredevil’s Kingpin in New Images & Vincent D’Onofrio Interview[/h]

While comic book villains have a bit of a reputation for being two-dimensional and cackling over their evildoing, some of them see themselves as the good guys and believe that putting a stop to upstart vigilantes and so-called superheroes is what’s best for mankind. According to a newly released character description, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk (A.K.A. The Kingpin) in upcoming Netflix series Daredevil will be the latter sort.
D’Onofrio is the third actor to play the Kingpin on screen, preceded by Jonathan Rhys-Davies and the late Michael Clarke Duncan. The full-length trailer and promotional stills for Daredevil have teased the arrival of Hell’s Kitchen’s powerful crime lord, but the latest official stills have offered our first good look at D’Onofrio in the role.

In Marvel comics, Wilson Fisk is traditionally depicted as being as wide as he as tall – sometimes even wider – with an obese physique that conceals immense strength. D’Onofrio told USA Today that he gained 30 pounds for the role, bringing him up to an intimidating 280 pounds at 6 foot 3 inches tall.
I wanted him to have an appearance of being super-powerful so that when he throws a punch, it’s a major punch. There’s a lot of weight behind it,” the actor explained, making it clear that the Kingpin won’t be afraid to get physical if the situation calls for it. Check out the first images of D’Onofrio in character below.
Click for Full-Size Version:

Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) is the show’s hero: a blind attorney whose four remaining senses are extremely heightened, and who decides to use his abilities to fight crime and injustice as the masked vigilante Daredevil. The character’s red, horned costume from the comics doesn’t exactly make him look like one of the good guys, though, and his utilitarian black outfit in the show isn’t much better. Perhaps because of this, the official character description for Kingpin indicates that not only does Wilson Fisk see himself as the good guy and Daredevil as the bad guy, some of the people of Hell’s Kitchen are inclined to agree with him.
The shadowy figure behind organized crime in Hell’s Kitchen, Wilson Fisk has one mission in mind: to save Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter the cost. This immediately puts him at odds with Matt Murdock’s vigilante alter-ego, who also seeks to protect the city – but sees the criminal element as the root of the city’s problems.
Central to this conflict is that Fisk truly believes he’s doing good for Hell’s Kitchen and at times may seem more of a hero to its people than Daredevil. Intelligent, complex and physically imposing, Wilson Fisk is the perfect foil for Matt Murdock, and the two will collide dramatically in Marvel’s Daredevil.
Fisk certainly sounds like a formidable enemy for Murdock, and according to D’Onofrio the character’s volatility makes him someone you definitely wouldn’t want to stand too close to: “In one sentence [he] could easily go from being a child to a monster, depending on where his emotions take him.”

[h=1]Daredevil: Charlie Cox Talks Red Costume & Joining The Avengers[/h]

In just under a month, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will welcome its next big blockbuster film, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and then a few months later, fans will finally get to see the highly anticipated Ant-Man on the big screen. But Marvel Studios isn’t only interested in taking over theaters everywhere, they’ve also slowly been making their way into TV.
ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which follows a covert agency as they track down people with superpowers, has already been on the air for two seasons. This spring saw the midseason premiere of Agent Carter, a series built as a prequel to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the other films. However, for Marvel Studios’ next foray on the small screen, they decided to sell their newest series Daredevil to Netflix.

Daredevil stars Charlie Cox as blind lawyer Matt Murdock aka Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as villain Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin, and it’s Marvel’s first proper live-action superhero series since joining with Disney in 2009. The move to Netflix seems to have paid off, too, because the series is already getting rave reviews from critics. So it’s not surprising that the stars of Daredevil are already talking about a season 2.

Cox and D’Onofrio sat down today for a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), where they answered fans questions about the upcoming series. And Cox had quite a few interesting things to say about his transformation into ‘The Man Without Fear.’
-
[h=2]The Costume[/h]

Recent trailers and stills for Daredevil have shown the superhero’s origin story, complete with his first costume used to fight crime. It’s a very simple black ninja costume (seen above), so many fans have been wondering if we’ll get to see the character’s red suit. Cox confirmed that we do, and it’s also his favorite:
“I love both of the suits. Obviously, it was great to involve the John Romita Jr. black ninja costume, but the day I first put on the iconic costume is a day I will never forget.”
Cox has obviously done his homework, referencing John Romita Jr.’s work in the Daredevil: Man Without Fear miniseries where the ninja costume was introduced. But the actor seems to have gone even further in preparing for the role and caught up on a lot of the Daredevil comics:
“Obviously, I had to learn quite a few skill sets for this role. The main ones being: Blindness, forms of martial arts and the American accent. However, the greater part of my preparation was spent reading comics. I think you will find influence from many of the DD writers and illustrators over the years. Personally, I found Bendis/Maleev runs incredibly helpful in terms of the tone of our show.”
The conversation on comics also took a turn to his favorite story arcs: “I really love the issues when Matt Murdock is defending the White Tiger. It was so cool to read a comic book with such a compelling courtroom scene. I also have to mention Jeph Loeb’s Daredevil Yellow. So touching.”
And Cox later talked about villains he’d like to see on Daredevil if they’re renewed for season 2: “I have no idea if it could ever work in our show, but I would love to see Stilt Man make an entrance. Maybe even Jester.”

Yet it’s Cox’s comments about joining the Avengers that will leave comic book fans excited to see it happen. Despite the fact that Daredevil does appear in the Civil War seven-issue series, so far we haven’t heard any mention of the character being in the film adaptation Captain America 3: Civil War. But Cox says if Marvel were to call, then he’d be ready:
I have no idea if this is even a possibility, but I can tell you that I would love nothing more. I don’t see why the character from our show couldn’t fit in with the Avengers, if he was invited

But with the movie reportedly having started shooting this week, time is running out for the Daredevil to appear. Especially, if Cox wants to be able to work with some of his favorite actors/characters in the MCU:
I really think Chris Evans does an amazing job as Captain America, and I happen to think him and Daredevil would work well together. Other than that, Black Widow?…Can you blame me?

But what do you think, Screen Rant readers? Do you think Daredevil should be in Civil War with the Avengers and Spider-Man? Let us know in the comments.
Daredevil will be available for streaming on Netflix starting April 10th, 2015.

DAREDEVIL:-

The flash is probably the most exciting comic book series ever for fans due to "superpowers" involved. But DD is the best comic book series for sure. Arrow is boring as hell since the start... only deathstroke excited me. The action is similar to DD but arrow has repetitive action and it gets boring with those same moves which all look very fake. The action is grittier here. But the action is not as good as "banshee" which has the most lovely action scenes i have ever seen in a series(hand to hand)... spartacus was good too but not as good as banshee. Anyway, talking about comic book series here.
It was really a good build up toward the end and it shows and is really rewarding. The acting and story is solid. The villain is very good as kingpin but there are flaws in his acting. He overacts too much and is too old to be threatening on a physical level... what was shown of him, i could have taken him down with my okayish boxing skills and strength. So seeing him fight in a comic verse "effectively" disappointed me a bit. The other characters were solid as well.
The style of the show is for binge watchers and i think that is good for comic book series. Agents of shields is a horrendous show with the worst action i have seen ever and puke worthy story. Peggy carter was a snail for me and nothing ever interesting happened in it(even binge watching). This show is gonna endure and make sure that shows like agents of shield and arrow pick up their act. It is a dark themed series like the arrow but it does it in a very "batman" like style. I feel that it would have been as good as a batman series could have been if ever made for tv(though batman would be much cooler but DD picked it up in the last action sequence).

Just trust that this is the best comic book show ever created. And I see amazing things now happening from both dc and marvel in the future(as well as netflix) to match what has been shown in these 13 odd episodes.

it is great no doubt... much better than arrow... the action is still not too good as people would say(banshee has better than action and the fake fights of spartacus are better as well)... but it is mostly because it is more of an origin story in the first season... it got awesome right at the very end...

as i said... flash exictes me much more and only at the very very end in the series, that i felt that satisfaction that i see from flash... but we are talking about quality over here and that is much higher... if a batman story is made with similar quality then that would be better and much more exciting... arrow has been pretty bad other than the deathstroke storyline and the action of arrow is better, although, the action of arrow looks fake, too fake infact. And GOT is just subpar show in high budget which no one can see due to the high budget bling...

daredevil is better as it is binge watching(best thing) and not episodic at all... there are only a few characters so the character development is great... GOT sucks the biggest just because it has no character development and is a haphazard mix of bad writing and story with no head or tails... if it was a weekly affair then DD would have been a lot less awesome for people and i think this is the best way to watch a series... a really long movie with good quality and few characters...

The music at the opening title sequence of Daredevil = UFF!!! :O
QFT!!! Plus Charlie Cox is damn good as Matthew. I loved the whole series. I wouldnt say it was better than Flash and Arrow combined but yeah it was a lot better than Arrow and at par with Flash. Although am a Flash fan but the guy who did Daredevil took it off limits in acting than the guy who plays Flash.
