[h=1]Gotham Season 2 Will Introduce Azrael[/h]
[This article discusses plot points from Gotham season 2, episode 5 that may be considered SPOILERS.]–
Despite being advertised as a prequel and precursor to Batman,
Gotham has taken its fair share of artistic license over the first two seasons. Of course, as with any series, sometimes the changes might make sense to make the show feel more grounded or even fit better within its established universe, but a number of the alterations made on
Gotham have felt like retrogression when compared to the source material.
While
Gotham has improved in its second season, one thing remains certain — it is still not a Batman show, nor should it be. But at points it doesn’t even seem like James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) is the focus either. Instead, producer Bruno Heller and
the rest of the crew behind
Gotham seem to be treating the city of Gotham and its criminal activity as the main character, centering in on the underground crime world and the origins of several future members of Batman’s rogues gallery.
Season 2 has been appropriately subtitled
‘Rise of the Villains‘ to coincide with the emergence of even more villainous characters than in Season 1, and later in the season will be no different it seems. As revealed by tonight’s episode of
Gotham, the Galavans are descendants of the Dumas line, which means that the Order of St. Dumas could become part of the plot to take down Gotham and the Wayne family. Hence, we may be seeing the
assassins of that order emerge before the season is through.
As
Gotham EP John Stevens told
ComicBook.com, the Order of St. Dumas storyline will continue developing as the season goes on, hinting that Azrael will be showing up as well.
“We will be going deeper into the Order of St. Dumas over the next run of episodes, and it will continue to play an evolving role for the rest of the season. And yes, we wouldn’t be telling an Order of St. Dumas story without also intending to tell an Azrael story. Just keep watching.”
For those familiar with the history of Azrael in the comics, the first character that comes to mind is usually Jean-Paul Valley — who briefly assumed duties as Batman while Bruce Wayne was recovering from his back-breaking battle with Bane. However, it seems the version of the character we will see on
Gotham will be more akin to a general warrior class of the Order of St. Dumas, than the more recent iterations, in that it will be a larger group rather than one singular character.
That angle for the character is largely hinted by what the Order priest tells Theo Galavan in the latest episode, saying,
“The day of redemption is at hand. Our brothers are crossing the ocean now, warriors unlike this city has ever known.” Judging off that alone, it seems the Order of St. Dumas will likely be a collective rather than an individual.
That being said, don’t completely rule out an appearance of a singular Azrael character down the line in
Gotham, but don’t bet on it being much like the Jean-Paul Valley version of him. Even then, nothing is off the table; and so far, the creative minds behind the show have shown no hesitancy to
altering the mythology of Batman.
Gotham returns with ‘By Fire’ next Monday at 8pm on FOX.
