Those were some frantic final 15 mins. Whew!

Klinsmann has done well with the USA team. Belgium's superior skill-level showed at the crucial juncture and made the difference in the end.
So this brings an end to the Round of ET.

Just a reminder, here's the QF schedule:

FRA v GER - Friday 9pm.
BRA v COL - Saturday 1am.
ARG v BEL - Saturday 9pm.
NED v CRC - Sunday 1am.
Semis will be played in that sequence as well.

Argentina and Belgium both haven't been particularly exciting, and we're going to see at least one of them until the semis. That sucks.

I feel so bad for the Swiss. Benaglio made some saves that a better-known keeper might have conceded there. Outstanding stuff.

Those was some tense final moments :hah:

Argentina go through by the skin of their teeth. I only caught ET where the Swiss were dominating. Messi just needed some space and he assisted a goal.
Di Maria is a fantastic player.
Honestly speaking, the way Argentina have played in this world cup so far, I think it's safe to say they won't make it past the semis. Switzerland and Iran both displayed how to control the game against Argentina. Drop deep and defend at the edge of the box whilst never allowing Messi much space.

Meh, both Argentina and Brazil don't deserve to go through to the finals imo.

That's perfectly possible. Or perhaps they're simply late-bloomers and we'll see Argentina's best in the quarter-finals and onwards. I remember they peaked early in the previous two World Cups only to be sent packing in the quarter-final stage.

  • For the first time ever, group leaders advanced to the QFs.
  • For the first time ever, 5 out of 8 Round of 16 matches went into Extra Time.
  • Since 1970, this is the first time there is a balance of European and American footballing nations. BEL, GER, NED, FRA and BRA, COL, ARG, CRC
  • Colombian goalie's age is about 43 and has conceded only 3 goals so far.
  • Since 1998, whenever France has advanced from the group stage, they have reached the final.
  • So far, only Netherlands and Colombia have won each of their matches.
  • Netherlands came back from behind thrice in four matches.

Quarter-final fixtures

i think the stat means winning in the 90 minutes of regulation time....
Ah that makes sense although it would be a technically incorrect thing to say.

Sad I'll have to miss most of the France vs Germany action. Highlights just don't cut it. Brazil vs Colombia ought to compensate for it somewhat I think.

It's probably gonna go to penalty shoot-out, so you might catch the ending. @Ottoman
I dunno. A gut feeling says France will prevail and match will end within the stipulated time. Both teams had a bright start but they've faltered as the tournament went on.

The French merely require an inspired performance from one individual and they could go all the way to the final.

Germany will prevail and in the alotted time...

Brazil and columbia could be tough, with neymar getting quite some injuries during the chile match, he was like wobbling by the end if someone saw that.....

My gut concurs with yours, but I am doubtful that Benzema will be able to convert the midfield's hard work into goals. The French forwards (barring Valbuena) is their weakest link. Valbuena and Matuidi will have to work some magic and Pogba will have to not be so wasteful.
