Base to enhance versions are not cross-gen releases which is the main difference about this announcement.

Sony forced Last of Us PS3 owners full price of whatever Remastered version on PS4 launched at. There was no option to just get the upgrades. Even if you make the case that PS3 > PS4 conversion isn't trivial, Ubisoft did a digital discount for a bunch of games if you owned them on PS3 (Blackflag).

I don't see how Sony, or any third party publisher, can justify charging for "remastered" versions now when this precedence is being set by MS and CDPR.

Let's not make it sound like this is the first time something like this is happening. Sony has had cross-buy games across PS4/Vita (and some PS3 games) for a while as well.

Secondly, while we're calling out Sony, MS published games like Rise of TR's 360 or XBO version didn't have any kind of discounts either .. and the 360 to XBO conversion would be far more trivial than PS3 > PS4.

Finally, using the base to enhance model here makes sense here because at least CDPR's tweet implies an upgrade based system, not a full re-release with the kind of enhancements something like TLoU remastered did from PS3 to PS4 (eg, completely re-rendering all video files in the game from 720p to 1080/60 and adding new elements in Factions MP not possible on PS3 because of memory constraints etc)

Of course this is a good move on MS/CDPR to announce this, but it's gonna be shocking if any publisher tries to charge for something like this.

There was cross-buy and there was also Play Anywhere titles. Yet remasters were $40-$60 re-releases. TLoU remaster was a simple up-res and frame rate boost. Lets not pretend that enhanced patches haven't already gotten the same quality of upgrades this gen. People were forced to buy the packaged deal, as opposed to giving the existing owners of the base game and DLC an upgrade path option to just get the "enhanced" visuals features like a Pro patch.

No one said MS has always had this strategy. But MS is the first to take this step here and this probably won't be a one off case. Now its Sony's turn to follow suit.

Everybody expected remastered versions of late gen games (TLoU 2, Tsushima, Cyberpunk etc) like GTA V and TLoU were remastered for a price last gen. This announcement officially sets the opposite expectations for next-gen remasters. So in a sense, this is a first. Would be interesting to see if Rockstar does RDR2 remaster and still charge for it.

Bayer also confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 wasn’t scheduled to appear at the event regardless of CD Projekt Red’s attendance.

    Started Dead Island 2, and i find it pretty lame. The story is shit. The characters are either cringe or bland (all 6 of them), The gameplay isn't fun. Even the goddamn zombies don't behave like proper zombies. They're all fast & intelligent unlike how zombies are supposed to be like. Any fan of "zombie" genre cannot possibly like this shitfest of a game. Dying Light 2 was million times better than this shit.

    tbh gaming industry as a whole is failing much like tech industry. They have buckled down too much to Corporate suites then relying on passionate and innovative people. A corporate only believes in financial growth and shareholders.
