THE BABADOOK (2014)
~ "
Don't let it in!"
Well ... puppet-ed Babadook, or him making a phone call "
ba BA-ba Dook! Dook! Dook!" wasn't a very good idea. But this got me thinking, if this movie is just about some sinister presence lurking in a single mother and her son's house. But some theories give a different 'psychological-only' vibe, while the other making you fully believe on Babadook's presence. I am thinking about the ending scene - '
meeting in the basement to deliver foo ... worms', that '
hovering mother' scene, and the '
basement exorcism' mostly, which reflects the latter. Those were some frigging nerve-racking spine chilling moments. By the way, that book was creepy as f*ck.
Add the astonishing performance by the
mother,
Essie Davis. Her pattern shifting to patient and bat-shit crazy, deserve respect for truly understanding a character. (Don't forget that TV Lounge scene, after the possession, right before finishing the family dog). The
son was too mature for his age. How else can he perform being a spoiled brat, testing the patience of his all alone mother. Interesting '
tools' though.
I don't know what to say, but my initial impression wasn't very good. The more i saw it, thought about it, the more interesting it became. Its different from the usual stuff. And i respect it for it. Its not the gore, jump scares, made-up scary faces, hysteria ... or shaky cams (ha!), which makes up for a good horror movie. Its the
atmosphere. And very few movies do that exceptionally well. No CGI, priceless pin drop silence, wonderful sound mixing and soundtrack, superb acting ... what else should i count in
Babadook? It might not feel like the scariest movie you will ever watch, but man its so profoundly made. Tingles with your emotions, and its downright creative.
8/10.
