I am operating Windows 8. Recently it has started to take up too much RAM. I have 8 GB installed, and when completely idle, the task manager shows that 5.7 GB out of that 8 is being used. This is while all programs are closed.
Any idea what could be the issue, and how to resolve it?

check task manager for any process which is consuming that much ram , also do check your computer for any virus infections, if the previous steps wont help then its a memory leak possibly done by Catalyst control center in combination with BF3 and BF4. it a common problem with people having Win 8 and AMD hd 5xxx and 6xxx series card. to fix this high consumption of ram you have to restart the computer (if its done by AMD catalyst control center). that the only fix that helps me .

well it happens specifically with BF4. but i have noticed this high consumption often before running the game as well. also, i cant seem to find any such process in task manager that justifies the consumption.
any other fix for this memory leak? iv'e tried a lot of reboots...

This problem persist when the OS booted or you run any application or game after that this happened ?
It happens every time. just after the boot, or after / during a game.

Uninstall every software that you have installed after the windows installation and install the software one by one then observe which one is causing the problem. If this is not gonna work reinstall your windows and let me know.

No need to worry about ram consumption. 64Bit windows usually consume 1.5+ GB of ram after boot on Idle,

I just completed a virus scan, it didn't detect anything. But now whenever i boot, the antivirus shows that it had quarantined or taken effect on something 'file replication malware' or something like that. I guess thats the issue, because after RAM usage drops back to normal (1.3gb at most at idle).
ANy idea how to remove this sucka?

Scan the whole HDD with Malwarebytes, reboot the system..

now open command prompt as an administrator and do a system files check

enter this command
sfc /SCANNOW

Open up task manager to see what's taking up the ram. Our can kill a task using high ram. One you know the culprit, take water actions you seem are necessary..

Try adding your game EXE & main folder in your AV's exception list. Usually when you run a game AV starts scanning it thus eating alot of RAM.

[sarcasm]Make sure that your bathroom's door is closed, it can be a reason for unnecessary RAM usage.[/sarcasm]

Scan your system for viruses/trojans using some popular software like Malwarebyte, S&D and such. Usually this happens when your system is not fully protect from threats.

saadi939! NOTHING is wrong with your Windows. If you want to check the "actual" ram consumption, then check Resource Monitor (>Memory Tab).

If you are using a Mechanical Hard Disk Drive, and you have more than 4GB RAM then Windows will keep more ram ready (on standby; i.e. cached), to use it instantly when needed.

You will never run out of RAM, so you should stop worrying about more RAM consumption and let Windows do its job. When a program (or a game) will require more RAM, Windows will provide it. (Otherwise, Apps would start to Crash, including your Desktop or even an OS crash via BSOD)

Yup, it was malwares...

Scanned my system through Malwarebytes, and removed a whole lot of them.
Now my system is back at normal, 1-3 GB at idle that is.

Thanks a lot for the replies!

saadi939! Could you PM me (or post here, if you still can) a screenshot (or a text log) of the result?

I wana see the names of those "Malwares" disturbing your RAM. :)

Did y'all see the new Assassin's Creed trailer? They finally made a AC set in Japan & then they put a negro as the male protagonist. Ubisoft is taking cues from Disney, and it isn't gonna end well for them, just like Disney. Go woke, go broke!
