The only thing my mom has bought for me in the past 3 years is my MacBook. Otherwise I buy everything myself from money earned through writing on various blogs. It's why I started writing in the first place.
A Mackbook ?. World's best mom ever. Period. The only thing my mom has bought for me in the past 3 years is my MacBook. Otherwise I buy everything myself from money earned through writing on various blogs. It's why I started writing in the first place.
I disagree man...actually alot of scientific papers disagree with you. Gaming helps you immensely in problem solving skills, hand eye coordination and focus.Gaming is a waste of intellect. It teach you nothing.
i sooooooo want to make that thread :laugh1:So I can see another potential thread in the making, is a gaming a waste of time and resources? Lets see who's gonna make it. If no one does I'll make it over the weekend. Personally I don't call it a waste, call it unintentional or sub concious learning...you learn. Several studies have proven it. Further I believe if you find satisfaction from doing something you don't call it a wastage.
Now for the topic, had the Atari in home even before got hold of my senses, and then got SEGA and PSOne as a gift but from there I have never asked my parents for funding my gaming habits. Bought PS2 for almost 13k me and lil bro bought it from our savings. I still remember my mother's words "13000 rupay ka hai, bahut zaida paisay hotay hain yeh".
Waited almost 3 years till I was in a position to afford the PS3 and its games. Same goes for my tech hobbies.
Personally I too believe kids shouldn't be spoiled by fulfilling their every need so that they understand the value of things....And I'll stop here as we will drift into another debate.
This right here is (sorry to say) wrong on many levels.Gaming is a waste of intellect. It teach you nothing.
This right here is (sorry to say) wrong on many levels.
Gaming also works on an individual's mind on a subconscious level as well as can offer a better teaching experience in "LIFE" experiences. Over the years, I have read several news pieces which have shown how video gaming had a positive outcome for example a guy saving one person's life because he saw it in a videogame how to administer emergency service something.
Gaming also makes your senses and response time quicker. Shooters are an example of this. You need to think and act quick.
Many games which have a storyline with morality choices and such also do work on a subconscious level and the interactive experience that video games offer work on a much deeper emotional/intellectual level than watching a creative learning movie or a show.
Why do you think children have learning type video games?
Talking about playing professional in Pakistan IS the real waste of time. Outside Pakistan, in the West and also in the far East, professional gaming is respected, a lot and also has many opportunities. A friend of mine who is very good at MP games specifically CS and such who played in a clan and also won 3rd place in the World Cyber Games(?) I think that were held in Pakistan, also got cash and everything BUT what stopped him from pursuing that career was the lack of opportunity.
Because we live in such a society and culture that everyone around us thinks that playing games is a waste of time (and are reminded of it at every step {itnay baray hogaye ho abhi tak games kheltay ho?}), all this also sits firmly at the subconscious level and hence a cycle is then ensured to continue.
There are many boys (Pakistanis and others) who when they play games they have a dream of becoming a video game programmer or designer or such and put their creative ideas to use but the society and the norms suppress that talent and yeah sometimes they don't also have the proper, what should I say, skillset to fulfill it nor the will to work THAT hard?
In short, anything that you enjoy doing, whether a hobby or something professionally, CANNOT be simply considered a waste of time.
@Topic
Initial/big investments in the past were done by parents and after that I did odd jobs or saved money to support my gaming needs. Alhumdulillah now after a job, I got my PS4 and stuff all on my own (after ofcourse tending to my responsibilities at home)
Just because FPS games offer better learning eye coordination and quick decision making and not problem solving doesn't make all games a waste of time and intellect my friend. RTS games do offer better strategic learning but nowadays even FPS games offer squad controlling and better team play options, heck, MP of FPS games, when clans are synchronized, its like great teamwork, shows you how to work in a team, how to put ego or pride aside and sometimes follow orders etc.As an Isolated statement, its wrong I accept. But I said it in the context when you let games take over your life, only then it's waste of time and intellect. I am talking about FPS or dumb games here when you are just learning your hand to eye coordination and making quick decisions. It is an excellent stimulus for motor skills but not problem solving.
However actual decision making when accompanied by long term planning such as in Starcraft 2 and DOTA or Civ V. That actually help you make informed decisions. On the other hand games like COD, CS, etc. are a grind.
When combined with money, and learning, types of games do matter. Unfortunately we Pakistanis can spend 10 hours per day on FPS but think of RTS as game which takes too much time.
We have a culture and society where leg pulling is general hobby of everyone. Seeing bright side of gaming is next to impossible as one generation of parents to another they transfer this most valuable knowledge that if someone is not Engineer, Doctor or Lawyer, he/she has no place in society, gaming as profession is a like trying to shoot the moon with your toy gun.
Waste of time is when your hobby is affecting your life goals.
Job wala hun to khud he karta hun Alhamdolillah! when I was in school so parents and even siblings did everything for me I can't ever repay all they did for me!
Do share ur blogs I like reading stuff written by PG membersI finance my stuff by writing on blogs and such. Its 90% me and 10% parents/elder brother. I hope to be fully self-sufficient soon as relying on siblings and parents for expensive needs isn't good. Earning yourself and buying expensive shit on your own is what I believe in.
On the case of gaming wasting time. Well it depends upon the situation. I think both gaming and usefulness should be equally utilised. It can be a great benefit in the long run with vast amount of knowledge that can even be used to earn money. PC's, aside from gaming can be used for learning. My principle is to manage both equally. Even so, I don't agree gaming is a waste time. It made me a better driver I'll give you that
