What Makes a good gaming pc

My laptop is filled with viruses and i am trying to replace it with a new desktop computer. All what i need my computer is to play Counter Strike 1.6, because thats what mainly i do. I just needed some help regarding the new computer. Could someone please tell me about the approppriate drivers and stuff needed for the new desktop which would make my game run extremely smooth and totally lag free. Please tell me the best specifications i should put forward to the guy making my pc. Please specify the cards etc and can into any details because i don't even know about the basic stuff . Help required immediately and any help would be appreciated, any questions please ask!

since your requirements are fairly nominal i suggest the following:

2.6 GHZ
Dual Core
800Mhz 2MB LGA775 E5300
5950

Asus P5KPL-AM Second Edition (Intel® Core™2 Quad Ready) - 4500

get yourself a pair of 2gb sticks of corsair xms2 or even kingston 667's, make sure u get 4gb so you can turn of the paging file for any os that you use without fear of running out of ram..you can buy used ram as they are long lasting so isnt much of a risk if u get one used!

cm460 psu
hdd according to ur needs get a western digital just make sure its not one of those green eco friendly versions....
get a low end graphics card ati 4650 (inno3d or xfx) make sure its the 512mb version
other then that additional things are to your own liking, this should serve you with cs 1.6/ source and hl2 based games just fine...

A good gaming PC primarily depends on your usage. For some people even an Atom is good for others even i5s are not enough

Right now in the mainstream market there are two main CPUs you can get. Core 2 Duos and their replacement the Core i3. What you buy mainly depends on your pocket and your budget.

Here is what I'd suggest:

1) Core 2 Duo system

Intel Pentium Dual Core E6300 (same as Core 2 Duos but its cheaper so more value for money)
Asus P5KPL-CM or P5KPL-AM depending on availability

Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800MHZ 2GB RAM (even Kingston KVR will work for your usage but nothings wrong with better RAMS for a bit more money so Corsair is preferred :wink2

Seagate hard drive (space depends on your preference just make sure it is the Seagate 7200.12 drive not any older model like 7200.10 etc)

Normal casing and PSU (probablu costs abt 2-3k) and DVD RW for abt 2k

Graphics card: Depends on wether you want to play anything else except CS.

Alternatively if you want you can go for Core i3 although I wouldnt recommend that UNLESS you plan on getting into proper gaming and want to get a good GPU etc. In that case you can either get a GPU with the above system or spend abt 15-20k more on a mainstream Core i3 gaming PC.

The Core 2 Duo system should cost BELOW 25k depending on how big a hard drive you choose

1. What are the specification of your current laptop?
2. Why are you going for a new system? Just because of the viruses ?
3. Would you play only Counter Strike 1.6 on it?

4. What is your budget?
5. At what resolution you (want to) game? Or what is the size of your monitor?

p4 HT Produces lot Heat and performance goes down or go for P4 with 775 pin
Dont go for 478 pin

yaar maira setpup daikh lo... i only play hd movies and cs 1.6... i have an e5200/2tb hd space/samsung p2370/2gb of ram only/p5n73-cm/builtin gpu 7100gt/mx518/deathadder/ms3.0/salmosa/hd200 headphones/450w chincese psu/goliathus control/logitech keyboard...

this is everything i got... and i run 1.6 super smooth.. never falls below 100 ever... but the thing is that as promod is coming you should get a better pc than mine as i get like 60-90fps on the source engine from this pc due to the bad gpu... so get something like mine and get a good gpu... good enough gpu and overclocking you cpu will help u even run heavier newer games at lower settings...

i think this is normal system very sufficient to play cs and if by any chance u wanna play new games aswell go for a HD 4850 instead of HD 4650!!

no it doesn't... i have been playing this game for 8 years+ so i have tried it on many setups... software mode is not good enough trust me...even p4 has problems... atleast a 3.0ht processor is required other wise constant fps drops...

guys he doesnt want to do future gaming, he just wants a smooth pc for cs gaming...so even the cheapest of all stuff would do! you can run cs1.6 fairly well with any low end system made today! for a constant fps just add in a low end gfx card and your good to go!

man, a good gaming pc is something like dual cores, dual gpus, dual rams

but if you just want to play CS, then buy a dual-core or a pentium D, with 1 GB of ram and a cheap 4k video card. it wont be a good gaming pc but it will let you play couple of latest games and would come cheap toooo

Seagate 250 GB is more than enough for your needs... Get that ..

I would second that.
If you want a decent PC for just light work, then 250 GB is must, because below that, your PC would look very jammed, and you will encounter low hard disk space. 250 GB is good because it will make your PC a bit future proof too.

with a good mobo for overclocking!!!
apart from that...the hear of a gaming cpu is the Card..
nothing below a 9800GT....or 250..GT...
and the a good dual core cpu or a cheap core 2 duo..

Ok guys so what im going for is
Intel Dual Core E6500 / INTEL CORE 2 DUO E7500 2.93GHZ

RAM : Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800MHZ 2GB RAM

Graphic Card: Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT

Hard disk: 250 GB Seagate

Is this good enough or should i go for something better?
Secondly if a processor's OS is Vista, can XP work on it like Vista would ?
and thirdly which of the 2 processors mentioned above should be bought?
