They literally brought up a free cam in the beginning of the demo to close up on the ground to show the detail and textures lol

Lets see if actual games can avoid the current gen trappings and have a meaningful difference w.r.t. gameplay. As it stands, this demo doesn't give any idea for gameplay possibilities (yes even the ending lol) as it was literally just one character moving in a straight line between static geometry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This tweet wasn't even being discussed between Chandoo and myself. Direct Storage API is exactly meant for that. Even without that, Tim proved himself wrong when he said current NVMe SSDs can run the demo with "awesome performance". Not to mention Nanite also heavily depends on teraflop compute power (also in his own words), not just SSD, of which XSX and PC have more of.

If the other platforms couldn't even reach or sustain 30fps Sweeney wouldn't shy away from screaming that from the rooftops. UE5 is a multiplatform engine after all that Sweeney wants to be used everywhere, but the marketing partnership with Sony keeps him from going into detail about other platforms as of yet.

Direct Storage API is exactly meant for that.
Direct Storage only makes the software side of it more efficient. It does nothing to overcome the hardware-related hurdles Sweeney mentioned. After all, the API is only one part of XSX's velocity architecture, which also includes a hardware decompression block for further efficiency.

Tim proved himself wrong when he said current NVMe SSDs can run the demo with "awesome performance".
They probably do run it well, because the demo is likely to be far from maxing out the PS5's I/O throughput. I also expect the XSX to run it well. What people have been criticizing Sweeney for is his remark about the PS5's I/O system being ahead of what PCs can do today, because, as he explained quite well in his tweet, conventional ssd speeds are theoretical numbers that only represent data throughput from drive to kernel memory. What about gpu memory?

Of course, all that geometry does need to be rendered at the end of the day. But that's why we have things like dynamic resolution and VRS to reduce gpu load during instances where compute performance peaks out. Much like with the mid-gen refresh consoles, the XSX's advantage will usually translate to a higher resolution.

Multiplatform games will always work with all target platforms in consideration, but that doesn't mean a multiplatform engine can never take advantage of hardware features unique to a platform. It's the PS5 exclusives that will truly take advantage of its fast and efficient ssd, and the good news is that UE5 is equipped with the tools to make it happen, should some 1st-party studio wish to license it for their next game.

No we are still shitting on these corporate ramblings. Ofcourse Xbox X has more teraflops (a term coined by Sony to give positive spin to PS4 pro). So this is sort of Sony's reply.

I mean PC tech especially storage tech is not driven by how it plays video games. SSD was available back in 2010. But since we have few Sony Corporate Enthusiasts here, let this marketing shenanigans commence.

Everyone is going to sell the PCs and start buying PS5 because how advanced its SSD is hehe. Maybe Google will install PS5 instead in thier data centers.

What are the biggest Unreal Engine games on PS? I think they are trying to shed that XBOX label because of all the Gears of War partnership.

Too bad they do not have any real games to show off. At this point last gen, I thought Sony had Killzone Demos available.

Remember the Killzone hype by Sony fanboys lol. It was like the second coming of Jesus. I play pretty shitty games sometimes, but Killzone was so bad I left it half way. And it was like 7 hour long game.

So the simpler language is, he was testing the performance on most efficient hardware available to him. I hope it dramatically improves the performance on Sony console in future. But I doubt any first party developer from Sony is even using UE. In the end all this potential is like the Cell processor from PS3 age. Lot more juice for devs compared to XBOX, but economics will never let the developers fully utilize all the extra bandwidth.

im not a hater of any console or pc but i dont know why people are naming it "PS5 graphics" when its clearly a engine which means every game made on that engine will look like that. What does PS5 has to do anything with that ?

lol Nanite doesn't mean just using Quixel megascans. Also, a lot of current-gen games use them. The advertised list of partners on the front page of their official site doesn't even mention 4A Games lol.



As for ray-traced lighting, it may be more physically correct, but the quality of lighting here is ahead of that seen in other engines. In the end, that's what matters.

TLoU 2 looks borderline next-gen as it is.
Agreed, especially in the animation department. It's a step above the quality of animations seen in other story-driven single-player games, even those that have used motion matching.

A lot of people use screenshots alone to judge visuals, but that's only half of what determines it. How it looks in motion is also extremely important. Some of Metro Exodus' animations are laughably bad. But hey, "next-gen" lol.
