[h=1]‘Supergirl’ Casting Rumor: Superman Will Cameo in CBS TV Pilot[/h]

Following a list of successful DC Entertainment TV shows, including Arrow, The Flash, and Gotham, it came as little surprise to hear that CBS was interested in developing their own superhero series. However, given that CBS has built their mega-successful network on sitcoms and police procedurals, fans were taken slightly aback when the network revealed their intention to center their DC series on Supergirl Kara Danvers (a.k.a. Kara Zor-El of Krypton) – a character that, given her Superman-like powers, would necessitate some costly visual effects work. Yet, as our own Andrew Dyce has argued on multiple occasions (including a recent Screen Rant Underground podcast episode), the network could take liberties with the character – adjusting her super powers to work within a weekly (super-powered) case of the week series.
Still, recent rumors have suggested that Superman could be a known entity, or at the very least exist, in the Supergirl TV universe – meaning that the show won’t entirely eschew Kara Zor-El’s familial

connections
, and subsequently, her Kryptonian powers. Nevertheless, a significant appearance by the Man of Steel could distract from (or outright undercut) the intended focus – the dual life of Kara Danvers – as well as create crippling suspension of disbelief (e.g., why isn’t Superman zooming in to help his cousin?). Now, a new casting report adds a bit more clarity on how the iconic hero might appear on the series – without causing too many logistical problems for the showrunners.

According to a post at Project Casting, CBS is looking for a DC Comic Superhero “body double” – requesting actors to submit applications under the subject line: “Superman.”

Check out the full report below – including a more complete description of the role’s requisite body type and responsibilities:
‘Supergirl’ Casting Call
Photo Double Casting Call
We are looking for BODY DOUBLE for a DC Comic Superhero –
You must be available for an interview this Thursday and if selected will work several day during March.
This is for a CBS pilot. You can be SAG or Non-Union.
You should be 5’11 or taller and be Square Jawed
and have a ripped physique.
You must send a bodyshot, shirtless, sizes, current contact info and your first five – in the subject line write SUPERMAN.

It’s worth noting that the casting agency is also looking for a pair of twin girls and twin boys for the pilot episode. Though, before anyone gets too excited about the prospect of a Wonder Twins appearance down the line, at this point, it’s unclear if the network is simply looking for two pairs of identical child actors to fill two roles (like the Olsen Twins on Full House) or four entirely separate parts.
Check out the second casting call below:

Twins Casting Call
We are looking for Caucasian, 6-9 month old Identical Twins Boys and Identical Twin Girls for a new CBS TV Pilot. They must have a current entertainment work permit. This will work during the March. Send photos, age, contact info, and a copy of permit – in the subject line write TWIN BOYS OR TWIN GIRLS depending on who’s being submitted.

Given the extremely young age of each set of twins, it’s probable that CBS intends to depict at least one flashback to Krypton, showing baby versions of Kal and Kara, via the combined performance of identical siblings (two boys and two girls) to portray the cousins in a scene pre-Krypton collapse. As indicated, it’s a relatively common practice for casting directors to seek twin actors for young roles – since the studio/network can double-up potential reactions (one child might be more active or smiley), mitigate any potential hurdles (crying or fussiness), while also working within the strict limitations that are placed on how much child actors can be on set.

Still, while it’s unlikely that the twins will appear on the series past the pilot, this pair of casting reports adds further evidence that Superman will be a bigger presence (even if he’s rarely seen onscreen) than some initially believed. Understandably, the showrunners want to place their focus on Kara, so it will be interesting to see how they manage to both insert Superman into the heart of Supergirl‘s mythology – while also preventing the Man of Steel from making regular guest appearances.

Could it be that Kara steps out of the shadows and becomes Supergirl after Superman is critically injured – or decides to leave Earth in search of other Kryptonians in the galaxy? As indicated, based on prior rumors, Superman is reportedly a known hero in Supergirl’s world and, as such, it’s also possible that Kal-El will show up in the pilot. Perhaps after Kara has stepped into the public eye, with a brief word of advice before flying back to his Fortress of Solitude - never to be seen onscreen again.

In either case, assuming the casting report’s “Superman” subject line is accurate, CBS does not appear ready to cast an actual Superman or Clark Kent actor – since the post indicates the network is looking for a body double and not a recurring onscreen role (albeit one that would match Superman’s description: 5’11 or taller, square jawed, and with a ripped physique).

As a result, when Superman appears as an adult, in a scene with Supergirl lead Melissa Benoist, it sounds as if he’ll be viewed from a distance – with the option to find a permanent/higher profile replacement in the future (should the writers decide to include the Man of Steel down the line).

Time will tell if Supergirl can sustain her own series, and if CBS is willing to shell out the coin necessary to make the god-like heroine’s flying and super strength look good onscreen, but it’s nice to see that the network isn’t entirely side-stepping the character’s history either. While it may be hard for some viewers to suspend disbelief that Superman exists in the world but not the show, fans can definitely take some comfort in knowing that the showrunners aren’t erasing Kara’s well-known cousin from the picture, simply for the sake of simplicity.

After all, the existence, and a brief (even blurry) appearance by the DC hero could also help provide a point of comparison and juxtaposition for Supergirl to establish her own approach to superheroing. If something catastrophic happened to Kal-El (or someone he loved), it could help explain why Kara has been hiding – and why she’s reluctant to become a public hero.

[h=1]‘Supergirl’ Actress Promises A Hero That ‘Everyone Will Root For’[/h]

As more and more men and women are cast to bring comic book superheroes to life, a mixture of excitement and overwhelming pressure seems to be the most natural reaction. When it comes to playing a female superhero, the expectations are only more intense. But that’s the challenge facing Melissa Benoist, star of Supergirl.

As the pilot nears production, the network is calling on established talent to round out the cast (and no doubt invest in some impressive special effects). However, despite the ties to DC Comics’ biggest hero, it seem Benoist is most excited about the elements of Kara Zor-El not tied to her Kryptonian powers – and sees them as the most likely to win over audiences.

The unique perception and challenges facing the few female faces in the superhero space – and the rest of the CBS slate of dramas – may make Supergirl seem like a risky bet, but it’s certainly got more proven talent behind it than many other comic adaptations in development. Executive producer Greg Berlanti has learned the hard way how to craft a solid comic series in both Arrow and The Flash, with his efforts now placed on adding a female complement.

Of course, much (if not all) of the pilot’s strength or promise will be placed on Benoist’s shoulders. But when addressing the upcoming role with CBR, the actress didn’t claim that it was the superpowers, the action, or even her very own Super-suit that has her eager to tackle the part:

“What’s so wonderful about her is that she is such a relatable character, amongst her powers… What I’m the most excited about is telling a story about a human being really realizing their potential and their strength, and I think that’s something that everyone will root for and want in their own lives – I’m really excited about that.
“It’s a little daunting… but that’s good. I like being pushed. I work well under pressure.”

Benoist seems to be reiterating the message sent by CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler, who previously stated that it was the strength of Kara’s character (presumably for younger audiences as well as old) that won the network over, which originated in Berlanti and producing partner Ali Adler’s initial pitch. Using terms like ‘feminist’ to communicate what version of Kara Zor-El CBS is wanting to showcase is guaranteed to court discussion and dissection these days, so hopefully, that’s a sign of just how confident the network is in the show and Benoist’s portrayal.

Add in the fact that Kara will be crossing paths with some of the most beloved “Superman” characters around, and that she will apparently share the screen with the Man of Steel himself, and it’s no surprise that Benoist is still pinching herself at the opportunity. With roles in Glee and the critically-acclaimed Whiplash under her belt, Benoist seems all too aware of just how fast her star could potentially rise in the coming months:

“I think if you told my five-year-old self that all this would be happening in this period of time, I would not have believed you! Because it’s been really wonderful. I feel so privileged to be working and doing what I’ve always loved to do since I was four years old… I’m a little overwhelmed by it, to be honest.”

A gracious star is always helpful in winning an audience, but only the finished product will reveal how much potential Supergirl has in finding a regular spot on the small screen. What do you think of Benoist’s comments, and the actress’ fit in the role? Do you think there’s room for another network superhero show following The Flash‘s lead, or do you have concerns?

[h=1]‘Supergirl’ Casts ‘Cyborg Superman’; ‘Flash’ Showrunner Joins Series[/h]

The supporting cast of CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series has swelled by two, with the roles of star Kara Zor-El’s (Melissa Benoist) older sister, and the former CIA operative-turned-superhuman watchdog Hank Henshaw now filled.
For the part of Alexandra Danvers, Kara’s foster sister, the producers have tapped Chyler Keigh (Grey’s Anatomy). In the case of Hank Henshaw, it seems David Harewood (Homeland) will be playing the brilliant man who, in the comics, would eventually go on to become the tragic figure/half-robotic supervillain aptly named ‘Cyborg Superman.’

The casting news comes courtesy of THR, with Chyler Leigh likely best known to audiences for playing Lexie Grey, half-sister to Grey’s Anatomy‘s main character. Leigh was more recently seen in the unofficially-cancelled Taxi Brooklyn on NBC, playing a police officer who joins forces with a New York cab driver.

Adding the character of Alex Danvers to the Supergirl story marks one of the most significant changes to the comic book origin – and likely one way which the show will seek to tap into the family drama that’s proven so successful in The Flash. However, Alex won’t just be helping to “humanize” the Supergirl story, as the previous character details implied that her brilliance and familiarity with superhuman activity could end up leading her to a (highly secretive) government job.

The casting that will surely fuel even more conversation among comic book fans, though, will be that of Harewood. Previously seen on Homeland and the recently-cancelled Selfie, Harewood’s casting as another high-ranking government agent who plays things close to his vest isn’t surprising in the least. In Supergirl, he’ll by playing Hank Henshaw: a former CIA Agent now overseeing the Department of Extra-Normal Operations, and fulfilling the need to have some shadowy government figure who feels a superpowered vigilante is a threat to national security.

That’s not the most original character description, but it’s what lies in Henshaw’s future that will be getting fans excited. Originally introduced in the comics as a doomed astronaut, Henshaw was able to preserve his consciousness in digital form, eventually viewing Superman as his enemy, and constructing a robotic body including residual DNA of the Man of Steel. Ever since, the hard-to-kill Henshaw has kept a tenuous grip on his sanity, meaning an overall paranoia toward Kryptonians is well-founded.

It’s unlikely that such a story will be pursued in the short term, but then again, executive producer Greg Berlanti’s team didn’t delay too many twists in The Flash‘s first season. We’ve known for some time that Supergirl would augment its own character pool with established “Superman” foes (and even include appearances from Superman himself), so add Henshaw to the ‘villains-in-waiting’ category.

Though fans were kept waiting for some time to see which men and women would be bringing established and original DC characters to life, the recent weeks have seen most, if not all fall into place. With Kara (Benoist), Jimmy Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), Alura Zor-El (Laura Benanti), Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), and now the show’s central antagonist now cast, only Wynn Schott – the man who will construct the Supergirl suit – remains to be revealed.

As a final bit of news, it was also announced that current Flash showrunner Andrew Kreisberg has also joined Berlanti to executive produce and write the series – a move guaranteed to add fuel to speculation that Supergirl could introduce a cross-network shared universe with The Flash and Arrow.

What do you think of these additions to the cast? Is Leigh the kind of seasoned actress you had hoped to see play Kara’s ‘big sister,’ or do the changes to the origin story have you anxious to see the pilot before passing judgement? Sound off in the comments, and give us your best predictions for if, and when, Henshaw may take a turn to the… cyborg side.

[h=1]‘Supergirl’ Adds Former ‘Superman’ Dean Cain & Helen Slater in Mystery Roles[/h]

Being a fan of Kryptonians on television just got a massive dose of good news. Not only will Supergirl be bringing the famous DC Comics superheroine to the small screen, but a new report claims that Superman himself will be joining in on the action – that is, actor Dean Cain, who played Clark Kent on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman has been cast in the show’s pilot.

As if that weren’t enough nostalgia for the comic book fans out there, it’s also been revealed that Helen Slater, who was the first woman to play Kara Zor-El on the big screen in Supergirl (1984) will also appear in the show’s pilot.

News of the casting comes via TV Line, and while this update follows hot on the heels of word that the showrunners are looking to cast a Superman stand-in, we would warn that the physical requirements of the role leave Dean Cain out of contention. Nevertheless, Cain’s portrayal of the iconic DC superhero in Lois & Clark endeared him to many, giving a twist on the character’s story that made Clark Kent the ‘real guy’ – and the big blue Boy Scout the real performance.

Helen Slater’s turn bearing the famous ‘S’ may be less well known (and less well-received), starring as Kara Zor-El in a spinoff film to Christopher Reeve’s Superman series. Though the movie is credited with killing that particular film franchise (earning Faye Dunaway and Peter O’Toole Razzies in the process), Slater herself won over plenty of fans.

Fans of Smallville will recognize the pair due to similar throwback cameos, with Slater appearing as Clark’s mother Lara, and Cain as the brilliant-but-obsessed Dr. Curtis Knox. Though their roles in the Supergirl pilot are being kept top secret, fans will be thrilled to hear that the showrunners are wasting no time in tapping into the unsung men and women who have added to the character’s mythology over the years.

As the most recent Supergirl update saw The Flash showrunner Andrew Kreisberg recruited to executive produce and co-write the pilot, it seems the lessons learned with The CW show are already being put into effect. Producer Greg Berlanti had told fans to expect a Supergirl series whose romance and emotion set it closer to The Flash‘s mold, and now it seems the show will also follow The Flash‘s efforts to bring previous actors back to their fans.

The decision to bring John Wesley-Shipp back to The Flash as star Grant Gustin’s father has proven successful for fans and critics, so the immediate thinking may be that a similarly ‘meta’ move is at work here. Of all the characters cast so far, Kara and sister Alex’s (Chyler Leigh) parents have never been mentioned. Could they now have been found?

What do you think of the addition of Dean Cain and Helen Slater to the Supergirl pilot? Would you be happy to see them appear as Kara Zor-El/Danvers’ parents, or would you hope for smaller roles – a Superman voice-over, perhaps?

[h=1]‘Supergirl’ Casts Jeremy Jordan as ‘Toyman’[/h]

The Supergirl TV series, which didn’t even have a home a few months ago, has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few weeks. Greg Berlanti’s new drama set to air on CBS this fall will star Glee alum Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who shares his both super powers and otherworldly origins. And rounding out the cast is Mehcad Brooks (Necessary Roughness) as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Keigh (Grey’s Anatomy) as Kara’s foster sister Alexandra and Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) as Kara’s boss Cat Grant.
For longtime fans of Superman, onscreen and in the comics, there’ll also be plenty of surprises in store when the show premieres later this year. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star Dean Cain and Supergirl film star Helen Slater will appear in the show’s pilot. Then there’s also the casting of a very important supporting character that Superman fans should recognize. David Harewood will play Hank Henshaw, who in the comics becomes the super-villain Cyborg Superman.

But Harewood isn’t the only member of the cast who could end up playing a villain before the series is over. The Wrap reports The Last Five Years star Jeremy Jordan has joined Supergirl as Winslow “Winn” Schott, a tech genius and superstar IT whiz who works alongside Kara at Cat Grant’s company, CatCo. Astute comic book fans may notice that Winslow Schott is the real name of Superman villain the Toyman.
Jordan’s career is clearly on the rise. After getting his start in various Broadway musicals, the stage actor first made it big in Hollywood with a leading role on NBC’s Smash. From there, he did a guest stint on Elementary and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, before truly breaking out in this year’s film adaptation of the popular musical The Last Five Years with Anna Kendrick.
He is now set to guest star in the Supergirl pilot with the potential to recur later on. Jordan responded to the casting news on Twitter:

Interestingly enough, Supergirl could end up being Jordan’s first major onscreen role that isn’t related to a musical. Presumably, there won’t be any singing on the show, so this is a very big step for the stage performer turned screen actor.
His character the Toyman is best known in the comics for using toys to commit violent and sometimes deadly crimes. His weapons of choice are life-sized wind-up tanks, acid-spraying water pistols and toy soldiers that carry real guns. The character even ended up murdering a bunch of children in one issue of the comic. It’s uncertain if the tone of the TV show will be dark enough for something like that to happen on the series.
What do you think, Screen Rant readers? Are you excited to see a younger version of Toyman in Supergirl? What do you make of the show’s cast so far? Let us know in the comments.
Supergirl is expected to air on CBS sometime in 2015.

[h=1]‘Supergirl’ Begins Filming – What to Expect: Premiere, Crossovers & More[/h]

Ever since the announcement that the Supergirl TV show from Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Arrow) and Ali Adler (Glee, The New Normal) had been picked up for a full series commitment by CBS, the show has been moving quickly towards getting into actual production throughout these past few months with filming beginning early this morning.
As we now know, the cast for the show consists of Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, Mechad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Laura Benanti as Kara’s biological birth mother Alura Zor-El, Chyler Leigh as Kara’s foster sister Alexandra, and Dean Cain and Helen Slater in unknown roles.

The series will have most of the same creative team and crew from Greg Berlanti’s other DC television ventures, but other than a simple plot synopsis and the talent involved, not much is known about Supergirl at this point. In fact, while it’s been presumed that the series will premiere sometime in 2015, nothing has been confirmed concerning a premiere date for the show.

As previously mentioned, the filming for the pilot episode began today, with several tweets from members of the cast and crew releasing photos from the set. The hour-long episode will be directed by Glen Winter from a script penned by Berlanti and Adler. The Flash showrunner Andrew Kreisberg tweeted the following image from the set this morning:

A photo posted by Ali Adler (@aliadler) on Mar 4, 2015 at 6:59am PST
Winter has directed six episodes of Arrow as well as three episodes of The Flash at this point, including last year’s momentous “Flash vs Arrow” crossover, so while Supergirl isn’t airing on the same network as its predecessors, it certainly appears as though it will not only be similar in its tone and feel to the other two shows, but also in its aesthetic as well.
Now ever since the series was announced, it’s been rumored whether or not the show would crossover with Arrow and The Flash, with fans crossing their fingers hoping for the good news to come. CBS president Nina Tassler was quoted in the past saying she doesn’t expect the show to crossover with the CW series anytime soon, so the odds may not be looking good. However, Greg Berlanti has come out and said multiple times he would want the three series to crossover with each other at some point, so hope isn’t gone quite yet.

The problem is that crossing over two heroes on the same network is one thing, but crossing over three different superheroes on two different networks may prove to be more complicated for both the CW and CBS than the networks believe is worth the effort. Not to mention that all signs are pointing towards Superman existing within the same universe as his Kryptonian cousin, meaning Supergirl may already have its fair share of superpowered beings on its roster.
In the end, fans most likely won’t know if the three shows will crossover with each other until it’s announced by the networks and showrunners. Unless, Supergirl drops any Easter eggs relating to Arrow or The Flash, which is highly likely considering how well the showrunners on the CW series have been in sneaking links to each other throughout the past few seasons.
Supergirl star Melissa Benoist

Still, the announcement that the series has begun filming comes as welcome news, indicating a likely Fall premiere date for the series after the Summer break later this year. Supergirl seems to be jumping forward with new developments every week and with the series actually beginning filming, fans may just get to see a glimpse of the series sooner than they had originally believed.
So what do you think Screen Rant readers? When do you think the show will premiere? Do you think we could see a crossover with The Flash or Arrow? If so, why? Let us know in the comments down below!

[h=1]‘Supergirl’: Malina Weissman Cast as Young Kara Danvers[/h]

Casting announcements for CBS’ Supergirl TV series – from Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) and Ali Adler (Glee, The New Normal) have made it evident fairly quickly that the show will be shying away from any of Kara Danvers/Zor-El’s (Melissa Benoist) Kryptonian backstory. Beranti’s past DC shows have been steeped in as much reality as possible given the content, so the addition of a show centered around a character like Kara leaves one to wonder just how mythological and out-there the creators are willing to take it.

The casting of Laura Benanti as Kara’s biological mother, Alura Zor-El, led some out there to wonder if the series might incorporate flashbacks to Kara’s time on Kyrpton before its destruction into the story – much like how Arrow is told through a half-present/half-flashback structure. That might well be the case, going by the latest casting update.

Filming on the Supergirl TV show pilot episode is currently underway, but THR is reporting the series has added Malina Weissman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) to the cast as a younger version of Benoist’s Kara during her time on Krypton. She is set to guest-star in the pilot episode, but will most likely return for future installments of the series.

This won’t be the first time Weissman will play a younger version of an iconic character; her role in the TMNT reboot was that of young April O’Neil (played by Megan Fox as an adult), and it looks like Weissman will be appearing via a flashback in the pilot. Whether or not this plot device will be as frequently used as on Arrow, however, remains to be seen, as nothing more on the subject is mentioned in the latest casting update.

Melissa Benoist as grown-up Kara on ‘Supergirl’

Presumably, the flashback with young Kara will also include Benanti’s Alura – allowing the Supergirl pilot a means to show Kara interacting and learning from her mother when she was younger. Which makes even more sense considering Alura’s role in the show has been described as a, “strong noblewoman [whose] wisdom and guidance echoes across space and time.” Much the same could be said for how Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) remembers his mother in The Flash.

It’ll be interesting to see how Krypton is handled on Supergirl, given the series’ available budget (all the more so compared to the planet’s portrayal on the upcoming Syfy series Krypton). Arrow and The Flash have shown no signs of hesitation in going for large-scale sets and high amounts of visual effects in the past, so whether or not we’ll see Kara’s home planet as a society or limited to rooms, will probably only be confirmed when the series premieres.

Supergirl (assuming it gets picked up to series) will begin airing on CBS in Fall 2015.

[h=1]‘Supergirl’: ‘Mentalist’ Star May Play Supervillain Vartox[/h]

CBS’ Supergirl series from Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Arrow) and Ali Adler (The New Normal, Glee) is currently in the midst of production - adding another series to the ever-growing DC TV universe. While not much is known about the series other than the basic plot synopsis, cast, and creative team involved – rumors of certain iconic comic book heroes already existing in the universe continue to point towards Supergirl possibly being the largest DC TV show in scale to date.

It is still unknown whether or not this series will exist in the same universe as The Flash and Arrow – if it does, then fans will definitely be in for an interesting addition to the tone and style of the previously mentioned shows. After all, there has already been confirmation that the series won’t be shying away from Kara’s alien origins; not to mention the rumors about super-powered/alien villains having already been cast in the series.

io9 has recently reported that The Mentalist star Owain Yeoman has been cast in the series and will be playing the DC comic book character, Vartox. While nothing is official as of right now, Yeoman’s name can be added to the other list of comic book heroes and villains rumored to be making appearances in the CBS series. The character has also mostly interacted with Superman whenever he’s shown up in the comics, so this could hint even more towards the Man of Steel having a role in the series.

Vartox is a character from the comics that is a friend (and sometimes foe) to Superman. He is from the planet Valeron, but when his home planet is destroyed, Vartox comes to Earth as a replacement home and at one point falls in love with Lana Lang. His powers are similar and equal to Superman’s and his appearance is said to be an homage to Sean Connery’s character Zed from the 1974 film, Zardoz.

Supergirl certainly seems to be garnering an interesting cast of actors and characters for itself right off the bat (assuming this casting is true) with the previously mentioned alien characters and now an obscure character like Vartox – it doesn’t seem like the creative team is shying away from going deep into the comic book lore with this one.

Yeoman is a TV veteran at this point with roles in successful shows like The Mentalist and Extant, so it should be a welcome sight for TV fans to see him pop up in Supergirl at some point (if confirmed) – and while most are claiming Vartox as a villain in the series, the original report referred to Vartox as a hero, so it looks like his character could go either way in the show.

CBS’ Supergirl is currently in production.

[h=1]‘Supergirl’ TV Show Pilot Has Finished Production[/h]

CBS is preparing to make a bid in the ongoing lucrative superhero TV show game with Supergirl – from Arrow and The Flash co-creator Greg Berlanti and The New Normal co-creator Adi Adler. Leaked photos from the Supergirl pilot set have so far provided an early look at supporting cast members like Mehcad Brooks (as Jimmy Olsen), to go along with the first official look at Melissa Benoist as Kara Denvers/Zor-El.

A better look at the Supergirl TV series lies just over the horizon, now that filming on the pilot has wrapped. The show, like fellow DC small screen adaptation The Flash, will need some fairly substantial visual effects magic – so that it might properly realize its namesake’s super-powers. Which is to say, the pilot may require a fair amount of post-production work, before its potential as a series can really be properly evaluated (by both CBS executives and test audiences alike).

Arrow and The Flash director/cinematographer (as well as longtime Smallville director of photography) Glen Winter was tasked with calling the shots on the Supergirl pilot, drawing from Adler and Berlanti’s script work. Winter confirmed that production on the pilot is done over the weekend (via Twitter), while Benoist alluded to the completion of filming with her respective Twitter post yesterday (see below).

Supergirl pilot is wrapped. 5:30 am Sunday morning. So tired and happy.
— Glen Winter (@Glen__Winter) March 29, 2015
Today was a really really really good day.
— Melissa Benoist (@itsmmbenoist) March 29, 2015

Kryptonsite, which picked up Winter’s message shortly after he posted it, noted that CBS is slated to present its Fall 2015 programming (which includes the Supergirl pilot) to potential advertisers in May (the 13th, to be exact) – so it’s unlikely that any footage from Winter’s pilot episode will be released before then. Hence, it remains to be seen if this new Berlanti/DC project can bring Kara’s powers to life as convincingly as The Flash handles Barry Allen’s lightning-fast speed.

However, in a TV era when The Flash continues to impress with its metahuman effects even operating on a CW TV series budget (and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has managed likewise with its own VFX demands on ABC), there’s a solid chance Supergirl will prove impressive enough (sheerly in terms of small screen spectacle) to get plenty of attention from marketers. This certainly isn’t another David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman pilot in the making; the Supergirl comic book property is getting the respect it deserves here, judging by the caliber of talent involved and the effort already put towards creating a good look for Kara – one that’s modern, yet pays respect to the character’s history.

Here is the synopsis for Supergirl:
The series will follow Kara Zor-El, a Kryptonian girl who’s been hiding her powers here on Earth, but decides to embrace her powers, and become the hero she was always meant to be.

[h=1]‘Supergirl’ TV Show Gets Official Season Order from CBS[/h]

Comic book-based televisions shows are only increasing in popularity, with several such programs (ranging from AMC’s Preacher to Fox’s Lucifer) currently in the pipeline. We can now confirm that at least one of those projects will be making its way to a small screen near you soon, now that CBS has officially given Supergirl a season order.

The news isn’t surprising, as CBS had already made a series commitment to the Melissa Benoist (Glee) starring superhero TV show – meaning, the network would have faced a penalty, had it not picked up Supergirl for season one. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting, not least of all because this move finally gives CBS its own horse in the comic book adaptation race that it seems most everyone else is already playing.

Supergirl stars Benoist as Kara Zor-El, a 24-year old Kryptonian who’s been hiding her special powers for years – passing for an ordinary young person on Earth – when trouble rears its head in the form of super-villains, prompting Kara to embrace her true identity at last. Benoist was quick to express her excitement to the public about the good news (read: Supergirl getting an official order) via her Twitter account.
The Supergirl pilot was penned by Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and Arrow and The Flash co-creator Greg Berlanti. The pair will executive produce the series along with Sarah Schechter: an Arrow and Flash contributor, who’s also producing the upcoming spinoff TV show set in that same DC comic book television universe.

Supergirl will be airing on a different channel that those CW DC TV shows, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility that Kara Zor-El could one day cross paths with either Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and/or Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) – cementing the idea of a Shared Berlanti Productions DC TV show universe. It’s likewise conceivable that a Shared DCTVU could encompass more than these four programs one day – but best to not get too far ahead of ourselves.

Comic book superheroes may be more ubiquitous than ever on the small screen, but there’s certainly room for Supergirl to stand out from the rest of the pack. After all, it’s a female superhero series (which is still rare); Kara’s powers and opponents are unlike most any other on television, save for her famous cousin (who reportedly will exist in the Supergirl TV show continuity); and the Berlanti Productions team has started to become synonymous with quality superhero TV show storytelling. So the potential is definitely there for something worthwhile.

The Supergirl cast includes Laura Benanti (Nashville) as Kara’s mother, Alura Zor-El; Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) as Cat Grant, the head of CatCo and Kara’s boss; Mehcad Brooks (Necessary Roughness) as Jimmy Olsen, a photographer for CatCo on this TV show; Owain Yoman (The Mentalist) as the super-villain Vartox; and Dean Cain (Lois & Clark) and Helen Slater (Supergirl the 1984 movie) in supporting roles.
Supergirl season one should premiere on CBS by Fall 2015.

Watched the Pilot of Supergirl. Not impressed. It's damn cheesy to say the least. Will rate it 6/10.

^ This. The part with "Is it a man?" made me facepalm. Seems much like a chickflick but then again i've misjudged shows before. Will give it a try.

Does nothing to differentiate itself from all those powered shows out there. This has got summer cancellation written all over it.

Just watched the pilot.
Everything in this show sucks ass! The cringeworthy acting, shitty CGi, action.. EVERY bloody THING! This isn't a show, it's a shit show! The whole episode felt like an uber cheap b-grade movie.
I hope it gets cancelled soon.

Yeah, I reacted in the same manner to that, haha! And it sooo is like a chickflick! That's what I meant by "cheesy". I guess this show's meant for the teenagers out there! [emoji19]

Watched the episode, it was meh. At least not horrible like man of steel, but still not that good.
This show is probably gonna last a season only, and get cancelled then.

And hopefully this crap doesn't crossover with Arrow and The Flash.

Alan wake 2 is yet to recover it's development costs. Due to no physical release and no steam launch.
You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
