[h=1]Supergirl Season 4 Inspired By DC's Superman: Red Son[/h]

Supergirl season 4 is taking cues from the seminal DC Comics story, Superman: Red Sonand having Kara's greatest villain become herself. The Supergirl season 3 finale was more transformative than expected. Reign, was defeated, but nearly everything else changed around that event. Mon-El and Winn both joined the Legion of Superheroes and traveled to the future to fight a new threat, explaining why neither will be a series regular in season 4. Brainiac 5 decided to stay in the present, explaining why his actor Jesse Rath will be a series regular for season 4.
Lastly, and maybe most importantly, a second Kara showed up in snow-covered Siberia in the season's last moments. This Kara was born of Supergirl's aura that escaped during the final showdown with Reign. It's unknown if this new Kara will be the main villain of Supergirlseason 4 or not. However, she'll definitely be a huge part what will unfold and her appearing in Siberia is very intentional.

In an interview with TV Line, Supergirl showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller explained that Superman: Red Son is a huge inspiration for the next season of the series and the season 3 ending teaser. Rovner explained, "For fans of the comics, I think they might recognize that the story we want to tell is inspired by the iconic DC Comics’ Red Son, which told an alternate origin story for Superman."
Red Son is one of DC Comics' many Elseworld stories, which imagine worlds that are similar but different in key ways, to the main DC Universe. The premise of Red Son is simple. It begins with baby Kal-El escaping Krypton and landing in the Soviet Union, not in the middle of America's heartland. Red Son sees Superman became a symbol and ward of the Soviet state. Through Superman and his powers, the Soviet Union makes impressive strides to controlling the entire world. The only serious resistance ends up being the President of the United States, Lex Luthor.

It's pretty safe to say that story won't be replicated exactly in Supergirl season 4 and not just because the President of the United States is an alien played by Lynda Carter and Lex Luthor is a convicted criminal. Like many comic stories the Arrowverse has adapted it's more likely Supergirl will take the core idea of Red Son, a Kryptonian under the control of Russia, and mold it to their own purposes. Rather than chart a Siberian Kara's rise and fall in the Russian government, the main Supergirl will likely come across and face off against her (probably evil) clone.
The concept of there being two Supergirls in season 4 is strange but not unprecedented. The last Arrowverse crossover event, "Crisis on Earth-X," saw Kara come up against an evil Nazi version of herself named Overgirl. Since Overgirl and Melissa Benoist's performance were one of the best parts of the excellent "Crisis on Earth-X," it's probable that she's somewhat behind the decision to adapt Red Son for Supergirl season 4.
Benoist definitely has the acting capability to play season 4's hero and main villain. Hopefully Red Son isn't the entirety of Supergirl's season 4 plans. Supergirl has never been a series to shy away from political discussions or comic book weirdness and Kara facing off against a Russian version of herself would undoubtedly have healthy amounts of both. Yet there's only so much story that Supergirl can explore with Kara seeing an evil version of herself, especially after season 3.
Much of Supergirl season 3 was about Kara exploring her own personal dark side and pulling away from it into the light of optimism. Having a Red Son-inspired Supergirl as the main villain would likely hit on much of the same thematic beats. It would be better if the Red Sonstory opens Supergirl season 4 or is just a smaller arc within it, rather than being the entire year-long story.

[h=1]Supergirl Season 4 Confirmed to Introduce Lex Luthor[/h]

Lex Luthor is official set to make his Arrowverse debut in Supergirl season 4. The infamous Superman villain has been frequently name-dropped on the show since his sister Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) became a main character back in season 2. The Man of Steel himself (Tyler Hoechlin) made his Arrowverse debut that same season and will finally be joined by Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) during The CW's DC TV Elseworlds crossover event later this year. The three-part event will further see Hoechlin don Superman's black suit for the first time.
With Jimmy Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) likewise a key player on the show and more and more of the larger Superman mythology being incorporated, that leaves Lex as the last major piece to the puzzle that Supergirl has yet to formally introduce. The Arrowverse version of the character is currently in prison and his company Luthor Corp has since been taken over by Lena and rebranded L-Corp, as a reflection of the latter's efforts to separate herself from her family's dark legacy. Unfortunately for Lena, that's going to be more difficult than ever in season 4, now that Lex is set to enter the picture again.

Current Supergirl showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner have officially confirmed that Lex will make his debut on the series in season 4, via the following statement (h/t EW):
“We’re beyond excited to introduce iconic villain, Lex Luthor, to Supergirl and to weave him into our story this season. We’ve talked about having Lex on the show since it’s inception and we’re excited to have him finally arrive. We can’t wait for him to shake things up in National City and watch him go toe to toe with not only Supergirl, but his sister Lena Luthor.”

There's already speculation among fans that Lex has resumed his criminal activities behind bars in the Supergirl universe. The season 4 premiere episode, "American Alien", featured an appearance by Lex's former head of security Mercy Graves (Rhona Mitra) and her brother Otis (Robert Baker), as they attempted to fan the flames of growing anti-extraterrestrial sentiment in National City and the world at large. They ultimately succeed in doing just that, after they launched an attack on Camp David that forced Lynda Carter's
U.S. President Olivia Marsdin to reveal that she is an alien in disguise, herself.

Question is, were Mercy and Otis acting on Lex's orders? While it's possible that Lex is innocent in this case and that the Graves were acting solely on behalf of the season 4 antagonist
Agent Liberty (Sam Witwer), it's just as plausible that Lex was involved somehow and/or that he plans to use the rise in anti-alien sentiment to his advantage (maybe even to try and get his 32 consecutive life sentences reduced). Either way, it will be just as interesting to learn how Lex fits into the plot this season as it will be to find out who's playing him, seeing as there hasn't been a live-acton Lex Luthor on TV since Michael Rosebaum's iteration from Smallville.

[h=1]Supergirl TV Show Casts Jon Cryer As Lex Luthor[/h]

Jon Cryer has been officially cast as Lex Luthor on Supergirl. The news follows last month's announcement from showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner that Lex would be showing up in the flesh during the show's ongoing fourth season.
Lex has cast a long shadow across Supergirl ever since season 2, when his sister Lena (Katie McGrath) became a recurring player on the series. Though Lena is as brilliant as her brother, she's attempted to leave the Luthor family's criminal legacy behind by rebranding their company (Luther Corp) as L-Corp and lending Supergirl a helping hand, in the aftermath of Lex being arrested and sent to prison to serve no less than 32 consecutive life sentences. However, that's been easier said than done, between Lena's mother Lillian (Brenda Strong) running the anti-alien Project Cadmus in seasons past, and Lex - potentially - causing trouble in the everyday world from behind bars.

Lex is finally going to show up in the flesh on Supergirl season 4, episode 15, according to a new report from TVLine. Queller and Rovner have further confirmed that Cryer will bring the character to life on the show, and issued the following statement in conjunction with the announcement:
“We are enormous fans of Jon Cryer, and he was instantly our dream actor to play the iconic role of Lex Luthor. Jon is a super-talent, and the fact that he played Lenny Luthor in Superman IV brings an added layer of legacy to his casting. We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Jon to the Supergirl family.”

Nowadays, Cryer is best known for his role as Alan Harper across all twelve seasons of CBS' hit comedy show Two and a Half Men. The actor will be the first person to portray Lex Luthor in live-action on television since Michael Rosenbaum brought the diabolical mastermind to life in Smallville back in the 2000s. He will also be the first live-action iteration since Jesse Eisenberg reprised his Batman V Superman role as Mr. Luthor during
Justice League's post-credits scene last year. There was a fan push for Smallville veteran Tom Welling to play Lex on Supergirl recently, but the Arrowverse series' creatives ended up going with a very different Superman legacy casting choice altogether.

As for Lex's role on the show: some fans have speculated that
Lex has been manipulating events on Supergirl since the series began, and may have even taken steps to land himself in prison, so he could continue to pull the strings on groups like Cadmus without Superman or Supergirl knowing or being able to stop him. It's certainly not outside the realm of possibility that Lex is responsible for the current rise in anti-alien sentiment across the U.S. in Supergirl season 4; or, failing that, he may have hatched a plan to use the growing chaos to his advantage. Either way, it sounds like he's about to make both Lena and Kara Danvers' lives a whole lot more complicated.

Supergirl season 4 continues Sunday, November 18 with "Call to Action" on The CW.
