I would like to ask DCMD and Bad Mofo what their favorite racing game is? Need for Speed series has many mediocre games. But it also has games like Most Wanted.
Tekken is not perfect, far from it. For example, I don't like those juggling moves. I mean it's characters, not soccer balls.
And it surely is a friendly game for starters. People can start playing this game and defeat players who have been playing this game for a long time.
But does playing a game for longer periods of time makes anybody a good player? I don't think so. Anybody who plays only single player game can be defeated even by a noob. Humans and computer controlled characters don't behave in the same way.
Tekken does have many button mashing friendly characters like Eddy/Christie (they are the same DCMD
) and Hwoarang (although he has a lot of depth if you invest the time). But there are many characters which are very effective against such button mashers. My personal favorite against any new player who chooses any button mashing friendly character is Nina Williams. If you stick to your normal character which isn't good at low shots than you are going to have some difficulty against button mashers. But it's this diverse selection of characters which balances everything.
To be honest I don't understand all this talk about learning combos to win in Street Fighter but not in Tekken. Are combos the most important thing in any fighting game? The most important thing for me in any fighting game is timing and anticipation. Learning combos is only a part of anticipation. In multiplayer games (Tekken) I loved to block all the moves of a ten hit combo and then counter the final move. That left the opponents so frustrated
. But when a new button masher comes against you, do you think he is going to use any such combos? All you need to do is not make any mistakes and attack at the appropriate time. If anybody believes that that is too difficult, maybe they should find another hobby.
And what are those combos that exist in Street Fighter that make it superior? All you need is to learn how to use the uppercut and Hadouken and all that is left is timing. A player who plays with simple kicks and punches with good timing can beat a player who tries to pull off all those flashy moves.
Maybe people who have grown up playing Street Fighter just love it too much to appreciate anything else
