No offense to anyone but most of the people who voted Tekken would also pick NFS as their favorite racing game i.e an easy 'casual' game with very little depth.
that is exactly what it is.

i'll give tekken6 a shot, but i still think 3d fighters have a long way to go before that can catch up with the complexity of 2d fighters.

I would like to ask DCMD and Bad Mofo what their favorite racing game is? Need for Speed series has many mediocre games. But it also has games like Most Wanted.

Tekken is not perfect, far from it. For example, I don't like those juggling moves. I mean it's characters, not soccer balls.
And it surely is a friendly game for starters. People can start playing this game and defeat players who have been playing this game for a long time.

But does playing a game for longer periods of time makes anybody a good player? I don't think so. Anybody who plays only single player game can be defeated even by a noob. Humans and computer controlled characters don't behave in the same way.

Tekken does have many button mashing friendly characters like Eddy/Christie (they are the same DCMD :p) and Hwoarang (although he has a lot of depth if you invest the time). But there are many characters which are very effective against such button mashers. My personal favorite against any new player who chooses any button mashing friendly character is Nina Williams. If you stick to your normal character which isn't good at low shots than you are going to have some difficulty against button mashers. But it's this diverse selection of characters which balances everything.

To be honest I don't understand all this talk about learning combos to win in Street Fighter but not in Tekken. Are combos the most important thing in any fighting game? The most important thing for me in any fighting game is timing and anticipation. Learning combos is only a part of anticipation. In multiplayer games (Tekken) I loved to block all the moves of a ten hit combo and then counter the final move. That left the opponents so frustrated :D. But when a new button masher comes against you, do you think he is going to use any such combos? All you need to do is not make any mistakes and attack at the appropriate time. If anybody believes that that is too difficult, maybe they should find another hobby.

And what are those combos that exist in Street Fighter that make it superior? All you need is to learn how to use the uppercut and Hadouken and all that is left is timing. A player who plays with simple kicks and punches with good timing can beat a player who tries to pull off all those flashy moves.

Maybe people who have grown up playing Street Fighter just love it too much to appreciate anything else :p

^Well said. Now you can argue that juggling in combos is not realistic... but mastering the juggling takes much more talent than learning some short combos in SF. Possibilities are endless really. You need to know MORE about the character to connect different moves in a juggle...whereas in SF there is a limited set of moves to begin with compared with Tekken. (not to mention most characters have a similar command for their attacks) Don't get me wrong... Im a die hard SF fan.. (3rd Strike/Alpha series anyone?)..but saying one game is less technical or a button smasher than the other is kinda silly.

In multiplayer games (Tekken) I loved to block all the moves of a ten hit combo and then counter the final move. That left the opponents so frustrated
.
Nomad, some people actually pull off the combos anticipating that the last attack would be countered so you can pull off a reversal to THAT counter....and thats when you hear that sweet sound of "CHICKEN" in the background. Priceless! :D (but good players rarely use the full 10 hit combos)

Actually I used to do that in Tekken 2. People had just started playing Tekken and some people got hold of those strategy guides and learned 10 hit combos of their favorite characters. At that time hitting that 10 hit combo was thought of as symbol of a good player.
I learned 10 hit combos of almost all characters just to counter such players. Against such people I used to pick Nina or Jun as they were probably the only characters who had counter system in Tekken 2 (if I remember correctly). That chicken system was launched in Tekken 3 and against players trying to use anti counter it was better to disrupt their combo by a hit instead of a counter.

10 hit combo was a big thing back in Tekken 2...I agree. But I was talking about recent editions.

The throw followed by the 'chicken' counter took damn good timing to execute and it had considerable amount of damage.

@nomad:

my favorite racing game is pgr2 followed closely by pgr4 :)

anyway, it's not that i grew up just with street fighter. i mean, when did tekken come out? 96? 97? i did play a lot of tekken 2 on those desi arcades (they had a ps1 hooked up to a monitor and a couple of fight-sticks).

i gotta admit i am totally new to fighitng games. sure, i played them for hours and hours with friends. but i never actually got how much depth those games have. i mean, playing sf4 against iron and micronuke made me realise how completely complex the game is. i had NEVER seen anyone play like that before.

i will try out tekken6 when it's released. maybe i'll find out that these games are layered as well.

In that case you should leave Street Fighter 4 and play Virtua Fighter 5 :wink2:

I loved Tekken 2 and kept playing it for some time even after Tekken 3 was launched. Tekken 3 was very different from Tekken 2 and didn't have some of my favorite characters.

But after playing it for some time I realized that they had added a lot of depth to the game. All those flying jumps were gone and some really great characters (Jin) were introduced. Some older characters got new moves while some other characters were somewhat downgraded (even with extra moves) to make a more balanced game (for example new Law). Tekken 3 is actually the game when serious fighting fans started taking Tekken seriously. Before Tekken 3 people considered Tekken as just a flashy but shallow game compared to Virtus Fighter 2. But Tekken 3 changed all that.

You really can't judge Tekken series just by Tekken 2. You should give Tekken DR a try to see how much it has changed.

The game is absolutely fantastic once you learn all the tricks. Tekken 3 was by far the best since it brought so many changes to the genre. Tekken 4 was broken..the juggling system with the walls was extremely unbalanced!!! Tekken Tag and Tekken 5 were rock solid with huge range of characters and new moves etc. Overall, its easy to play...but hard to master :)

But Street Fighter is 2D classic and we cant deny that. It has depth as well and since its a 2D fighter, some combos actually take much more timing and perfection to execute. An example is the EX Alpha series...which was a 3D shooter... it was alot of fun but it wasnt well recieved by the fans of the classic fighting style..and was way too easy.

Virtua Fighter 5, I never got into it. Its supposedly the most technical fighter... but I have yet to play it in more depth.

Im surprised no one mentioned DOA here.... button smashing at its best! But the overall presentation of the game is superb. The tag combos are amazingly fast.

@nomad:

virtua fighter is more comparable to gran turismo or forza. street fighter is like grid or pgr. tekken is like nfs:u.

not about how good those games are; they're all amazing games no doubt. some games are more realistic, some are most fast and fun.

personal tastes i guess.
