[h=1]PUBG’s new map makes the game faster and more technical than ever[/h]

[h=2]You had best bring your A game to Savage[/h]

Last night the latest map for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds dropped on a new, invite-only test server. It’s smaller by far than either of the two maps already released for the game, but it sacrifices nothing. In fact, it’s a dense playground that will appeal to hardcore players and skilled teams alike.
The map is called Codename: Savage for now, and it’s Battlegroundsfirst 4 km by 4 km map. Both of the previous maps were 8 km on a side, but that’s not the only difference.
Savage has a tropical, Asian theme. While the jungle isn’t nearly as oppressive and dense as you might find portrayed in a film like Full Metal Jacket or Predator, it includes much more foliage than any of the game’s previous maps. It also features more dramatic changes in elevation. Rather than appearing to be placed on a flat table like a piece of miniature wargaming terrain, the towns and villages on Savage fit within the contours of the land. Overall, it’s a much more believable and authentic space to explore.
The map has many different kinds of spaces to explore as well.
PUBG Corp.
To the west is a small island with a military bootcamp and a densely built manufacturing area. In the center is an ancient mountain cut through with deep ravines running north to south. As the circle closes in on this area your movement is heavily restricted. Expect many desperate showdowns to take place as players confront one another directly with very little cover between them.

To the south is a slightly larger island with another military complex, but also an ancient temple complex. The temple is still in graybox, waiting for the team at PUBG Corp. to finish the final skin, but it’s already proving to be a deathtrap. Four entrances, one on each side of the building, funnel players into a central room. Its multiple levels are filled to bursting with high-quality loot. Expect many early confrontations to take place here as players jockey for the best loadouts before moving on.
Connecting that southern island to the larger island to the east is River Town, a built-up area that straddles the map’s massive central waterway. In this area it feels as thoughBattlegrounds has finally turned a corner with its design, making good use of its waterborne vehicles for the first time.
Dropping in over the larger island, facing west. You can see the large waterway that bisects the map. It’s a highway, allowing anyone with a boat to land virtually anywhere they want once the circle starts to close in. PUBG Corp.Jet skis are incredibly fast, but they have never been as useful as they are now. Savage is filled with little outcroppings that you can use to launch yourself into the air, landing in the water to continue your trip or planting yourself in cover on dry land. Because the map is so small, movement by water is incredibly useful. You’ll find that those players who were previously trapped along the edges of the map are now able to use boats to easily move around the islands, arriving at completely different areas in order to regroup.
Movement on land is a very different tactical experience. Elevated locations with good peripheral vision are hard to come by, making sniping a much less profitable endeavor. That means in order to score kills you’ll need to stay on the move. But the elevation changes mean there are many more blind corners to contend with.
PUBG Corp.
A useful strategy on Battlegrounds’ Erangel and Miramar maps was always to move quickly from town to town, using two and three-story buildings as fortresses, spotting the enemy and planning your next maneuver. But many of Savage’s towns are placed inside bowls with wooded hillsides rising up all around them. That negates much of the advantage to planting yourself inside a building and taking potshots from the windows, since other players can move around you and flank you by carefully using the cover found around the edge of the bowl.
This is where duo and squad-based play could be elevated to the next level. By working together and using good verbal communication, groups of players should be able to use suppressing fire, smoke and fragmentation grenades to aggressively assault towns. That’s going to lead to very dramatic finishes, and demand a higher level of expertise for both the attackers and the defenders.
Simply put, Savage lives up to the hype. It speeds the game up considerably. I’m looking forward to playing it more, and to seeing what professionals and other skilled players do with it going forward. Savage will be live on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ testing server until 4 a.m. PT on Thursday, April 5.

[h=1]PUBG now allows you to spectate your killer[/h]
[h=2]Dying is about to become a lot more entertaining[/h]

The latest update to the PC version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will add a very interesting feature: The ability to spectate the player who killed you.
All you have to do is hit the “watch” button on the match result screen to spectate whoever took you out, which is going to be both entertaining and a good way to find and report cheaters. If your killer is then taken out by another player, you can jump to spectating theirkiller. You can spectate the nearest player to your death if you die by falling, get bombed in the red zone or get caught in the blue zone.
If you’re playing in a duo or as part of a squad, you won’t be able to spectate until all your teammates are dead to avoid players sharing information with each other through voice chat.
One interesting wrinkle is that you won’t be able to spectate your killer if you click on the death cam, although there is no official information from PUBG Corp. about why this limitation exists.
Some are theorizing that it’s a technical issue, not a strategic one.
“If you spectate the killer, you’re still in the game and connected to the server,” one player wrote on the game’s subreddit. “If you engage the kill cam, you clearly see a loading screen which can only mean that your leaving the server and entering a replay mode. You can’t just connect and disconnect and reconnect and disconnect to the servers over and over. If everyone connected to the server decided to do this it would just make the servers worse. Wait until you’re done spectating, then watch the kill cam. Problem solved.”
PUBG’s next update — version 1.0, update #9 — will be added to the test server before being moved to the live servers. This feature was already available on the experimental server that hosts the Codename: Savage map, to the surprise and delight of the players in the alpha test.

[h=1]PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One gets Miramar in May[/h]

[h=2]And deadmau5 plays PUBG at PAX[/h]

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One will get the Miramar map in May, game director Brendan Greene said during a panel at PAX East this afternoon.
It was the only real piece of news in a panel that was otherwise a rollicking celebrity play-through of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds featuring Joel Zimmerman, the electronic music artist known as deadmau5, wearing a 15-pound PUBG-themed helmet.
Miramar, a desert map, has been available on the Windows PC version of PUBG since the game’s 1.0 launch in mid-December. The game is still in Xbox One Preview access, where the only map is the base map, Erangel.
Otherwise, it was a modestly entertaining show despite deadmau5’s one (1) kill over several rounds. That casualty was an Xbox player named D1RT B1KE RACER so, if that’s your gamertag, congratulations, you were killed by deadmau5.
deadmau5 was playing with Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb’s account. After that first elimination, he was killed in-menu by an opportunist whose name we didn’t get. They no doubt saw the Major Nelson gamertag though. deadmau5 finished 79th.
In his second round, deadmau5 found a jeep but wrecked it, then went through an excruciatingly incompetent firefight on the bridge, which he partially blamed on wearing the helmet and playing in first-person view. deadmau5 bought the farm on the bridge, finishing 55th.
“I shoulda won that with the dude on the bridge,” he said. “I was just so amped.”
deadmau5 professes to be a big PUBG fan with “a whole bunch of chicken dinners” to his name. “My gamertag is _deadmau5 because ‘deadmau5’ was actually taken,” he said.
“Oh look, there’s someone with a 5 in his name, pfft, original,” he quipped later.
If you want to see the entire playthrough, it’s archived on the PAX Twitch channel.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is currently in a three-day event (on PC) on Miramar called “Tequila Sunrise.” Only shotguns and melee weapons are spawning in the four-person squad mode.

[h=1]PUBG’s new map will let you parachute into an underground cave system[/h]

[h=2]David Attenborough, eat your heart out[/h]

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds newest map, called Savage, is a work-in-progress. According to the team at PUBG Corp., they have a very specific vision that will take months to fully assemble. One piece of that vision is an ambitious underground cave system that players will be able to parachute right into.
Fans of the Planet Earth documentary series will recall the dramatic introduction to the fourth episode of its first season, titled “Caves.” In the opening frames, narrator David Attenborough introduces viewers to base jumping, the act of flinging yourself off a high peak with a parachute strapped to your back. It’s just that in this sequence these base jumpers are flinging themselves down the biggest underground cave shaft in the world.

BBC One/NetflixAs the developers at PUBG Corp. discovered on a recent trip, Thailand has its own version of Mexico’s Cave of Swallows. It’s called the Phraya Nakhon Cave, and it’s buried deep inside the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. That setting makes it a great fit forBattlegrounds’ Southeast Asian-themed Savage map.
The resulting in-game asset could lead to one of the most spectacular entrances to a multiplayer game ever made.

Using images captured from the team’s recent scouting trip, artists will interpret the Phraya Nakhon Caveto create something entirely unique. The goal is to allow players to drop straight into the mouth of the cave, gear up, and then fight their way out.
This isn’t the first underground section of a Battlegrounds map by any stretch. The game’s original environment, Erangel, featured a system of tunnels in the southeastern portion of the map, but they’re nothing like what’s on the drawing board right now.

Concept art showing a player parachuting into the entrance (or exit) of an ambitious cave system being built into PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds newest map, Savage. PUBG Corp. The real-life Phraya Nakhon Cave includes a small patch of greenery, including trees and other plants, growing right up out of the limestone. But there’s also a small pavilion, which was erected in 1890 to celebrate the visit by the king of Siam, Chulalongkorn. Since then, the site has become a symbol of Thailand’s Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

An exemplary photo of the Kuhu Kharuehat pavilion inside the Phraya Nakhon Cave. BerryJThe team at PUBG Corp. are taking the building-inside-a-cave concept and running with it. Expect multi-story structures to be placed underground, all accessible by parachute.
“We drew inspiration from this real life setting and then ultimate [sic] how we thought about ways to make it a fun and unique part of our next map,” PUBG Corp. said in a post on Steam. “We’re excited about it, and we hope you will be too! [...] We have months of work left to do; beyond refining the experience and making changes that impact balance, we also plan to add new vehicles, new weapons, and most exciting in our eyes are the new areas that we think will set this map apart from our first two.”
Expect the new cave system to deploy on to test servers some time in the next few months.

[h=1]PUBG’s second map, Miramar, is finally coming to Xbox One[/h]
[h=2]Four months after its release on PC, Xbox players can test the new map[/h]

Xbox One players are finally about to get their hands on Miramar, the second map forPlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, when it launches on the brand new PUBG test serverversion of the game today, April 25.
According to the official patch notes released by the PUBG Xbox development team, this test server patch will include a whole range of performance and stability fixes for the game, as well as Miramar and the exclusive weapons and vehicles that are only available on that map.
Just like the original Miramar release, it’s likely that the map will stay in the testing stage for a few weeks before it’s added to the live game. Unlike the Miramar test that was available to Windows PC players back in December, however, this test will only occur during a very limited window on the Xbox test server. The first test will run on April 25-27, from 8 p.m. ET to 2 a.m. ET each day, as well as from 2 p.m. ET to 2 a.m. ET on April 28 and 29.
Players can participate in the Miramar test by downloading the PUBG Test Serverfrom the Microsoft Store. The test server is available to anyone who owns a copy of PUBG for Xbox One.

[h=1]War Mode returns to PUBG and this time it’s coming to Miramar[/h]
[h=2]Everyone’s favorite team deathmatch mode is back[/h]

One of the most popular event modes in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds — War Mode — is headed back to the game this weekend.
This time, War Mode, which will be called Desert Knights, will take place on Miramar. It will be the first time PUBG’s second map will host the team deathmatch-style game mode. Also changing this time around are the squad sizes. While the last version of War Mode featured three, 10-person squads duking it out, Desert Knights will feature 10 five-person squads competing for victory.
Other than those two changes, things should be pretty familiar if you played the last version of the game mode. There will be one fixed safe zone where players compete to kill each other. Players will respawn every time they die, and kills and downs will award points to the team that secured them. The first team to 200 points wins the match.
Loot will once again be randomly assigned to players when they drop, but this time players are getting significantly better items. Along with level-three vests and helmets, and two grenades, players will spawn with one random weapon limited to those that appear in care packages: AWM, M24, Mk14, M249, Groza or AUG.
The new Desert Knights version of War Mode will be available starting on May 3 at 11 p.m. ET, and will remain up on the servers until May 6 at 11 p.m. ET. The mode will be available in most regions, with both third-person perspective and first-person perspective options, and third-person only for Korean and Japanese servers.

[h=1]PUBG’s new map has a name inspired by ‘fun’ and ‘chicken’[/h]

[h=2]So long, Codename: Savage; hello, Sanhok[/h]

he next map coming to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds now has an official name: Sanhok. Previously known by its working title, Codename: Savage, Sanhok will be returning for testing later this week and “is now only a couple of months away” from being officially released, developer PUBG Corp. said today.
In an update posted to Steam, PUBG Corp. explained how it landed on the name Sanhok. The map is based on “islands across southeast Asia,” including Thailand and the Philippines, so the developer mashed up some Thai and Tagalog. Here’s the brief etymology of Sanhok:
First, the Thai word for “fun:” สนุก (pronounced like “sah-nook”)
Second, the Filipino (Tagalog) word for “chicken:” manok (pronounced like “mah-nok”)

Combine the two and you get Codename: Savage’s new name: Sanhok (pronounced “sah-nok”).
Sanhok will be available to play later this week in an open beta test. Anyone who owns a copy of PUBG on Windows PC will be able to take part starting this Thursday, May 10, at 7 p.m. PDT. Sanhok will be available on the PUBG Experimental Server on Steam until Monday, May 14 at 4 a.m. PDT.
We tried out the map last month and found Sanhok to be “a dense playground that will appeal to hardcore players and skilled teams alike.”

[h=1]PUBG Mobile players can now head to Miramar[/h]
[h=2]The desert map is on mobile just a few months after the game’s initial release[/h]

Miramar, the desert-themed map in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, arrives in PUBG Mobile today, thanks to the game’s new 0.5.0 update.
Miramar has been a part of the PC version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds since December of last year, while the map still has yet to come to the Xbox One version. While Miramar and its new weapons and vehicles might be the most exciting parts of the latest patch, they’re joined by additional new content.
In a tweet from the PUBG Mobile Twitter account, the developers detailed the rest of the big update to the game. Patch 0.5.0 is the start of PUBG Mobile’s second season, which should mean new cosmetic content down the road as well as a stat reset to help players keep track of their latest seasonal accomplishments. Also coming to the game are “Progress Missions,” which are small, weekly accomplishments that unlock rewards.
There is also now a PUBG Mobile shop, where players can buy new cosmetic items, as well as a “Secret Stash,” which will sell certain special items at a discount.
Patch 0.5.0 introduces a whole host of improvements on the technical side of the game too, including improved sound effects and camera smoothness. There is also now language-specific chat to help people communicate a little better in-game.
PUBG Mobile’s 0.5.0 update is out now in most regions. For a detailed look at everything in the patch, you can check out PUBG Mobile’s official patch notes.

[h=1]Miramar has finally been released for PUBG on Xbox One[/h]

[h=2]The map arrives as part of the game’s spring update[/h]

Six months after its initial release — and after almost a month on the Xbox One test server — Miramar, the second map for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, has finally been released for the Xbox One version of the game.
The map arrived today as a part of PUBG’s spring update. The update also included all of the game’s Miramar-specific weapons and a variety of improvements to the Xbox One version’s load times, stability and optimization. The largest of these improvements should help to improve issues of buildings not fully loading when players land, and instability that led to the game crashing.
The update also comes with a few cosmetic additions to the game, including the instructor set and the golden tracksuit set. Both of these new cosmetic sets will be available for $4.99 and can be purchased directly from the Xbox Store.
Miramar has been in the Windows PC version of PUBG since December 2017 and has been in testing on Xbox One since April 2018. The PC version of the game is currently testing the game’s third map, Sanhok, which should be released in the coming months.

[h=1]PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds PC developers promise big performance changes[/h]

[h=2]‘We’ve fallen short,’ they acknowledge[/h]
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ development team for PC promised to be more responsive to player concerns — particularly over long running performance issues in the game — in alengthy note to the community posted yesterday.
Performance, server-side optimization and cheating are the top priorities, PUBG’s developers said, noting that “we’ve fallen short” despite some improvements to the game since its 1.0 launch back in December. “Players have rightfully called us out for failing to address complaints about performance,” they wrote, “and recently we haven’t done the best job of communicating about the changes we’re making to the game.”
To show even more responsiveness, the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds team will push updates to servers once fixes are ready; in the past, they’d waited on major patches to do a round all at once. “We’ll announce each of these improvements in subsequent patch notes,” meaning players may not know something has been fixed unless they see it for themselves.

As for optimization: some of the promises the developers make acknowledge some of the weaker and more aggravating points of the game. Most of these are related to things like frame rate drops, sluggish performance and stuttering. These are broken down into server-side problems (stuff handled online) and client-side (issues where the user’s hardware is getting flooded).
For example, a client-side optimization promised has to do with vehicles — they create so many effects driving over multiple surfaces too quickly that they can overload players’ GPUs. Character movement will also be optimized on the parachute drop, especially with a lot of players coming in, to cut down on frame drops at the beginning of a match.
And then on the server side, optimizing network code and reducing latency will mean that other players’ basic inputs will be revealed much more quickly. The speed at which server transfer data will also be improved so that items aren’t spawning in late after players parachute in. And server improvements should mean that weird physics affecting some vehicles will be resolved.
There is a ton more of what the PUBG development team promises to do — so if you play on PC, do give that letter a look, because it may address a specific gripe you have. Mainly, the performance issues seem to involve vehicles and then the rate at which servers update data. Those unoptimized processes manifest sometimes in things like image stuttering.
As for cheating, the devs called attention to the visible ways in which they’ve battled and even worked with authorities to arrest hackers and cheaters.
“We’ve introduced a variety of encryption based solutions to make it harder for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities,” they wrote. “We’ve also ... refined the process by which we identify cheaters—most cheaters are now banned within hours of using an exploit.”

Not everything was about the bad news of fixing a problem or dealing with a malefactors. The team said the Sanhok map is expected to be live on servers before the end of June, and it will carry a new vehicle — the “Tukshai” — a drivable three-wheeled vehicle like the tuk-tuk, or auto rickshaw.
“The team is focused on making literally every inch of Sanhok perfect for players,” they wrote, “whether it’s the texture on a rock wall or little unique trimmings around each of the islands houses.”

[h=1]PUBG's Player Count Has Dropped By Over 50% Since January[/h]

There is no denying that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been hurt by the success of Epic Games' Fortnite, and once players look at the actual numbers, they are pretty damning. Despite popularizing the Battle Royale genre, the shooter game has seen its player count dip by over 50% since the beginning of the year. In January, PUBG managed to peak at over 3.2 million concurrent players. Less than half a year later, and Bluehole's marquee title is averaging just over 1.4 million users daily.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' downward turn in popularity has happened while Fortnitehas ascended into the mainstream. The two games have had a tumultuous relationship since Epic Games launched their Battle Royale mode late last year, and they are now involved in alegal battle with PUBG Corp. over copyright infringement. Over the past several months, Fortnite has seen several gameplay overhauls, had a crossover event with Marvel, and even teased its first vehicle, which has all helped in establishing the game as one of the top titles today.

It's been a slow, but steady, decline for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' player count this year. By the end of February it had lowered to around 2.8 million, according to Steam Charts. In April, it finally sunk below the two million player mark, and it hasn't managed to rebound aside from one good weekend in early May. Now, it's finally below 1.5 million, and the trend continues downward.

Despite these worrying numbers, PUBG is still an incredibly popular game. In fact, it's still the most played game on Steam by far, and its concurrent numbers beat out all other titles on Valve's gaming platform. While stressing that PUBG is far from dead, Bluehole has to be worried about losing such a drastic amount of players in a short amount of time. Losing 50% of active players is a huge deal, even if there's still millions of people playing the game every day.
There are a few key factors that have contributed to the loss of all those players. A big one is that PUBG's key competitor, Fortnite, is a free-to-play game. Therefore, if more casual gamers are trying to get into the Battle Royale scene with friends, it's a much easier to start playing Fortnite than it is to play PUBG, and it helps that Fortnite is practically on every major platform out there. Players have also lost trust in Bluehole over loot box concerns, as they sell keys to unlock the loot boxes for real money (which can then be sold on the Steam market afterwards). Add to the fact that quality improvements have been slow in development, whereas Fortnite gets special events and sizable overhauls practically every week.
