Final Fantasy III Finally Coming to TV Screens Courtesy Of the Ouya
In the ridiculously complicated release history of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy III stands out.
The game US players know as Final Fantasy III is actually Final Fantasy VI. Final Fantasy III wasn't actually released in the West until 2006, sixteen years after it came out in Japan. Even then it's only gone to portable platforms, never to a dedicated TV console.
The Ouya aims to fix that and to give the graphics an overhaul into the bargain.
As we've mentioned before this is a fairly intuitive step. The Ouya is Android based and Square Enix recently ported Final Fantasy III to Android.
What's more interesting is the implications of a huge company like Square Enix working directly with Ouya. Final Fantasy III is playing it about as safe as you can get: It's already ported to Android so it'll take a relatively minimal amount of work to upgrade the graphics to HD. Still, it's the first proven publisher to work with the company and thus a major first step.
Also implied is that this is far from the last Final Fantasy game coming to the Ouya. This may or may not have something to do with the original Final Fantasy quietly being released for Android last Friday.
