Another dud in the Stadia library

FF XV runs at 1080p/30 FPS with frame pacing issues even if you select 4K mode.

Stadia still not meeting or exceeding the current consoles, while they promised 10.7 TFlops.

Wonder what comes first, the originally promised Stadia experience or the addition of Stadia's name to the Google Graveyard :laugh1:

[h=1]Google buys developer Typhoon Studios to work on Stadia games[/h]

Typhoon’s first game, Journey to the Savage Planet, arrives in 2020

Google has acquired Typhoon Studios, the developer behind upcoming space exploration game Journey to the Savage Planet, as part of the company’s efforts to bolster its internal game development plan. Typhoon Studios will join Stadia Games and Entertainment, according to a statement posted by that studio’s head, Jade Raymond.
Typhoon Studios was founded in 2017. The studio, based in Montreal, was co-founded by former Ubisoft creative director Alex Hutchinson and former Electronic Arts executive producer Reid Schneider. The studio announced Journey to the Savage Planet the following year.
Stadia Games and Entertainment was formally announced in March, when Google unveiled the Stadia platform. Raymond was named vice president of the division, which is tasked with developing original games using Stadia technology. Raymond said at the time that the internal studio will “reimagine the new generation of games” and “will also be working with external developers to make all of the bleeding-edge Google technology you’ve seen today available to partner studios big and small.”
Raymond says that Sébastien Puel, longtime Assassin’s Creed executive producer, will oversee the first Stadia Games and Entertainment studio in Montreal, which Typhoon is joining.
“Typhoon Studios will continue to work on the launch of Journey to the Savage Planet for multiple platforms on January 28, 2020,” Raymond said. “Meanwhile, our priority will be on integrating the team from Typhoon Studios into Stadia Games and Entertainment. We’re thrilled to welcome this incredibly talented team to the Google family!”
Google’s lineup of original, Stadia-exclusive games is nearly nonexistent, and the number of games that take advantage of the platform’s unique technology — outside of its streaming features — are similarly thin. Only Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint stands out among the current list of available games to take advantage of Stadia-exclusive features with support for Stream Connect in Breakpoint’s PvE mode. That feature lets players share their screen in real-time with up to three co-op teammates. “Seeing other players’ point of view eases the tactical communication between teammates, allowing players to collaborate like never before,” Ubisoft says of the feature.

[h=1]Google Stadia Pro users will get Thumper, Rise of the Tomb Raider in January[/h]

Stadia Pro subscription will also phase out its first game

Image

Google Stadia owners with Stadia Pro subscriptions will get two additional games as part of the service in January: stylishly bleak “rhythm violence” game Thumper and Lara Croft’s 2016 adventure, Rise of the Tomb Raider. Both titles will be available on Jan. 1, 2020.
The version of Rise of the Tomb Raider available through Stadia Pro is the 20 Year Celebration edition of the game. That version includes post-release content including the Blood Ties single-player add-on and Lara’s Nightmare, which adds a zombie combat mode.
Stadia Pro subscribers have just a few days to claim one of the platform’s launch games, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which is leaving Stadia Pro at 9 a.m. PT on Dec. 31.
Subscribers also have access to Stadia launch titles Destiny 2: The Collection and Samurai Shodown as part of the subscription, as well as Farming Simulator 19, which was added to Stadia Pro in November.
A Stadia Pro subscription costs $9.99 per month, and offers access to Stadia streams with 4K/60 fps HDR with 5.1 surround sound (provided your bandwidth can handle it), as well as select free games and discounts on game purchases.

[h=1]Even DOOM Eternal Can't Run In True 4K On Google Stadia (Despite Promises It Would)[/h]

DOOM Eternal will not be able to support 4K capabilities upon release, despite Google Stadia toting the title as a marquee title capable of 4K.

DOOM Eternal will not support 4K capabilities on Google Stadia, despite previous reports. The platform is Google's effort in creating their own on-demand game service. As part of its marketing efforts, Stadia boasted games like DOOM Eternal would be able to be run at 4K resolution.
Reality has suggested that optimizing games for Stadia is more difficult than previously thought, however. For instance, Red Dead Redemption 2 renders between 1080p and 1440p, well beneath 4K standards. In fact, the Google service's "4K streaming" isn't technically 4K at all. Destiny 2 developers gave technical insight into how games are run on Stadia. They explained games like Destiny 2 render at 1080p, then are upsampled. Bungie says Destiny 2runs at the PC equivalent of medium in-game settings, a far reach from 4K.

According to Engadget, DOOM Eternal will run at 1800p and then upscale to 4K. While much higher quality than 1080p, it's on the same level as the quality produced by Xbox One X rendering. For a game to be "true 4K" it would have to run with a horizontal display resolution of 4 thousand pixels, closer to around 3840 x 2160. On the other hand, DOOM Eternal will run at 3200 x 1800. Upsampling the game from 1800p means extra pixels are calculated to a near-4K level. While the image quality of 4K is similar to an upsampled resolution, the process is oftentimes criticized for not producing as sharp of an image as true 4K.

On paper, Stadia should easily support 4k. Stadia's GPU should be on par with the highest-end PC hardware. When Stadia's specifications were released, gamers were excited at the notion of high quality, cloud-based gaming made accessible on a myriad of devices. At GDC in 2019, a significant selling point of Stadia was that game titles like DOOM Eternal would run at 4K. As consumers learned more about Stadia, it was unveiled that 4K capabilities are locked behind a paywall. Stadia Pro members pay a monthly 10$ fee for 4K support, which is found to largely unavailable to them on most titles.
Since then, Google has faced backlash for not upholding promised specifications. At the moment, Stadia representatives insist the platform outputs 60 FPS at 4K, and put more of the responsibility on the developers to improve the quality of their games on the platform. Until Google takes a more proactive role in ensuring its customers receive what they're paying for,Stadia will continue to garner frustration from the gaming community.

It's not 4K, but 1800p/60 FPS is no slouch (although its the same as what the Xbox X will reportedly run).

[h=1]Google Stadia now free to anyone with a Gmail address[/h]

Stadia Pro is also free for two months

Google’s video game streaming platform, Stadia, is now free to anyone with a Gmail address, the company announced on Wednesday. To sweeten the deal, Google is also giving new users two months of Stadia Pro — including access to nine games — for free.
Existing Stadia Pro subscribers won’t be charged for the next two months of the service, Google said.
Previously, access to Stadia required purchasing the $129 Google Stadia Premiere Edition, a bundle that includes a Chromecast Ultra, a wireless Stadia Controller, and three months of Stadia Pro, the service that offered free games and video streams up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second with HDR lighting.

As of April 8, access to the base-level version of Stadia — games stream at a maximum resolution of 1080p — will be free by signing up at the Stadia website. Users still have to purchase games to own them, but those games can be played on a PC, Chrome OS tablet, Google Pixel phone, and other supported Android devices. A Stadia Controller (which can be purchased separately for $69) is not required; users can also play with a supported USB controller or mouse and keyboard.
The two free months of Stadia Pro will give users access to the following games, as of April:

 • Destiny 2: The Collection
 • GRID
 • Gylt
 • SteamWorld Dig 2
 • SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech
 • Serious Sam Collection
 • Spitlings
 • Stacks on Stacks (on Stacks)
 • Thumper
After the two-month trial period, Stadia Pro will cost $9.99 per month. Subscribers can cancel their subscriptions online, if they choose to do so.
Google is also making a change to Stadia Pro’s default streaming resolution in an effort to manage bandwidth, similar to efforts from Netflix, Disney, and Sony Interactive Entertainment, according to Stadia vice president and general manager Phil Harrison.
“With increased demand due to more people at home during this time, we’re taking a responsible approach to internet traffic,” Harrison said on the Stadia blog. “For Stadia, we’ve always adjusted bandwidth use based on a variety of in-home and local internet factors. To reduce load on the internet further, we’re working toward a temporary feature that changes the default screen resolution from 4k to 1080p. The vast majority of people on a desktop or laptop won’t notice a significant drop in gameplay quality, but you can choose your data usage options in the Stadia app.”
Google Stadia launched in November and is currently available in 14 countries. The platform boasts 38 games available to purchase, and Google said it is “tracking more than 120 games coming to Stadia in 2020,” with 10 of those being exclusive to Stadia.

[h=1]EA bringing Madden, FIFA, and Star Wars games to Google Stadia[/h]

Stadia gets Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order this fall

Electronic Arts is bringing its games to Google Stadia. The publisher will release at least five games, including this year’s Madden NFL and FIFA sports simulations and 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, on Stadia in 2020 “and beyond.”
Jedi: Fallen Order will come to Google Stadia this fall, while Madden and FIFA are slated for some time this winter. Google and EA did not announce what the other two games coming to Stadia beyond 2020 would be, but Phil Harrison, vice president and general manager at Google, promised more details on EA’s plans during a Stadia Connect video presentation.
EA joins publishers like 2K, Bethesda Softworks, Rockstar Games, Square Enix, and Ubisoft, which have committed to bring past and future games to the Stadia platform.
Google announced earlier this month that the standard version of Stadia, which can be accessed by anyone with a Gmail address in the platform’s 14 launch territories, is now available and includes two free months of Stadia Pro. The standard version of Stadia is free, but users need to purchase the games they want to keep.
