[h=1]Winter Break: 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 delayed[/h]
The countdown to next season of Game of Thrones just got a little longer because…well…winter isn’t here long enough. In an interview on the Ufc Unfiltered podcast, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss explained that because of the story lines for next year, production will need to be pushed back. And as a result, the premiere date for Season 7 gets a delay too. “We don’t have an air date yet,” Benioff and Weiss said. “We’re starting a bit later because at the end of this season, ‘Winter is here’ - and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more. So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.” For each of the first six years, GoT has started anywhere between late March and late April.

[h=1]Game of Thrones Season 7 Officially 7 Episodes; Arrives Summer 2017[/h]

In recent months, HBO and various people on the creative side of Game of Thrones haven’t exactly been shy about admitting that season 7 of the show is likely to be presented differently than all of the previous seasons. The season, they’ve said, will probably have fewer than the usual ten episodes, and may even debut later in the year than the series’ usual April debuts.
The reason for this? When it comes to the fewer episodes, the creators have an exact amount of story left to tell and have determined, for whatever reason, that telling that story will require fewer than 20 remaining episodes. As for the delay in production, each season of Game of Thrones has taken longer and been more difficult to produce than the one before – an issue exasperated by the need for colder weather in the TV show’s more Northern filming locations in season 7 (after all, “Winter is here). Now, we have official confirmation from HBO that such rumors are true.
Game of Thrones’ seventh season will indeed run for only seven episodes, and will debut in the summer rather than the spring of next year, per the announcement from HBO. The network did not announce a specific release date for the show’s next season, but here is HBO programming president Casey Bloys’s statement on the matter:

“Now that winter has arrived on ‘Game of Thrones,’ executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing. Instead of the show’s traditional spring debut, we’re moving the debut to summer to accommodate the shooting schedule.”
In addition, HBO announced the the season is mostly being filmed in Northern Ireland, with other locations including several cities in Spain (Sevilla, Caceres, Almodovar del Rio, Santiponce, Zumaia and Bermeo) as well as Iceland. And the network confirmed earlier reports that Mark Mylod, Jeremy Podeswa, Matt Shakman and Alan Taylor will direct episodes in Season 7.

What can we glean from this? Well, the filming in Iceland indicates that we’re going to spend some time in season 7 North of the Wall, while Northern Ireland has served as the location headquarters for King’s Landing, as well as various other interiors, throughout the series. As for Spain: the country has been used in the past to stand in for (ahem) everyone’s favorite location, Dorne, although one could guess that the numerous locations in Spain will be used for various places that Daenerys Targaryen will be visiting and/or laying waste to during her conquest of Westeros.
Yes, it’s disappointing that Game of Thrones fans will have to wait a few months longer for the resolution to Season 6’s plots. But if it results in a better, more satisfying show? It will be worth the wait. After all, HBO spent years making fans wait uncommon amounts of time for new episodes of The Sopranos, a series whose production was never nearly as complex.
Game of Thrones will debut in the summer of 2017 on HBO; an official date has not yet been announced.

[h=1]Game of Thrones Season 8 Confirmed to Be the Last[/h]

Season 6 of Game of Thrones proved to be a momentous one for the hit HBO fantasy series, bringing in its largest viewing audience to date – averaging 5 million more viewers per episode than in previous seasons! This season also began expanding far beyond the narrative of George R.R. Martin’s published novels, making it all but certain that Game of Thrones will wrap before Martin finishes his A Song of Ice and Fire series.
There is a chance, however, that Martin will release the much anticipated sixth book, The Winds of Winter, before the start of season 7. As we learned previously, Game of Thrones season 7 is premiering later in the year, aiming for a summer 2017 premiere instead of its usual spring slot. This will allow the production to film in more winter climates since, well, by now winter has actually come.
Still, even if Martin were to publish his next novel before the next season of Game of Thrones, he’d be hard-pressed to finish his novel series first. During today’s Television Critics Association’s press tour, EW talked with HBO’s new programming president Casey Bloys who confirmed that Game of Thrones season 8 will be the series’ last:

“Yes, they have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more. I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show.”
Bloyd also said Game of Thrones‘ showrunners, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, are planning for season 8 to be only six episodes long instead of the usual 10 (season 7 will have only seven episodes), but that has yet to finalized and could still change.

Anyone who watched Game of Thrones season 6 should know the end is right around the corner. Last season spent a good chunk of its episodes positioning characters for what will be, presumably, their final arcs. This was most evident in the closing shot of the finale, which saw Daenerys leading an armada of ships across the Narrow Sea to Westeros, finally making her play for the Iron Throne. Waiting for her, however, is Cersei, newly crowned Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s still unclear just who Cersei will have in her corner, but it’s a given she won’t give up the throne without a fight.
The North, too, may have itself a struggle for power between Jon – hailed King in the North by his men in the finale – and Sansa, the trueborn daughter and heir of Ned Stark. Though there’s no real animosity between two “siblings”, Sansa was left feeling passed over when everyone was quick to proclaim Jon their King without considering it was actually Sansa (with help from Littlefinger) who brought about their victory against Ramsey Bolton. Then again, The Night King and his white walkers may come crashing through The Wall before an real arguments over who will rule can even come to pass.

[h=1]Game of Thrones: Cast Your Vote For Who Should Sit on Iron Throne[/h]

In any election year there’s a temptation, whether among media, politicians, or voters themselves, to treat politics like it’s entertainment. In fact, so many different political columnists have written pieces this year comparing politics to Game of Thrones that the comparison itself is now almost reflexive. So it only makes sense, to treat entertainment — and Game of Thrones — like politics. And that’s what HBO is doing right now.
The pay cable channel has taken full advantage of the election madness to remind everyone of their favorite show while it is on hiatus before filming can begin on its penultimate season. And in order to do so, HBO is giving fans a chance to let democracy choose the next person who they think should rule over Westeros until they die — which sort of defeats the purpose of voting but that’s the way this game works, apparently.

HBO launched the project with a campaign called The GoT Party, advertised with the hashtag #GoT2016 , which is attached to a 30-day campaign to get Game of Thrones fans to vote on who they would like to see sit on the Iron Throne, implicitly at the conclusion of the series. In addition to the “What We Believe” platform above, there are four candidates, each with a platform, a list of skills and attributes, as well as a running mate. The field for Game of Thrones’ faux-election consists of Daenerys Targaryeyn (with running mate Tyrion Lannister), Jon Snow (with Lyanna Mormont), incumbent Cersei Lannister (with Qyburn), and Petyr “Littlefinger” Balish (with Sansa Stark).

As of Monday night, Jon Snow leads the voting with 56 percent, followed by Khaleesi (36 percent), Littlefinger (5.7 percent) and Cersei (2.5 percent.) There’s no polling on individual issues, but presumably the mass murder carried out by Cersei Lannister in the season 6 finale did not resonate especially well with voters, nor did Littlefinger’s scheme in season 5 to arrange his own running mate’s marriage to a known sadist and rapist.
It’s clear what HBO is doing here: Using a monthlong contest to keep interest in Game of Thrones during its offseason, especially considering the series won’t be back until the summer of 2017. The other motive is to encourage sales of the digital edition of season 6, as the site features links to buy the latest season on Amazon, Cinema Now, Flixster, Goole Play, iTunes, Sony, Verizon, Vudu, and Xbox. The page also keeps a running tally of likes on the series’ Facebook page, which crossed the 19 million mark on Monday.
This campaign seems like a good idea, so long as HBO doesn’t do something foolish, like actually making the election binding and awarding the real-life Iron Throne to the winner of the fan vote. Even if fan service plays a role in the series’ endgame, David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and George R.R. Martin likely know better than to leave their creation to that sort of chance.

[h=1]Angela Lansbury Reportedly Joining Game of Thrones[/h]

Game of Thrones recently started production on its seventh season, as the popular HBO series moves decisively towards its endgame. The seventh season will feature the long-awaited Targaryen invasion of Westeros, the reign of Cersei Lannister on the Iron Throne, and the continued encroachment of the White Walkers.
Word has begun to trickle in on casting of the new season, with respected English character actor Jim Broadbent already on board and casting notices out for some other new roles. Now there’s word that a legendary actress may be joining the cast in season 7 as well.
Angela Lansbury, the famed actress whose eight-decade career has included performances on Broadway, many movie roles, and a popular run on the TV mystery series Murder She Wrote, is in talks to join the new season of Game of Thrones, Gamesradar reported Tuesday, citing the German news website Bild. According to the report, Lansbury, 90, will appear in two episodes and spend four days on set. It’s unknown what the part or how it fits in with the world of Game of Thrones as we currently know it.

Lansbury was born in 1925 and has been acting since 1943. She has won five Tony Awards, six Golden Globes and an honorary Oscar. Her most famous on-screen roles include playing Eleanor Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate (1962), singing teapot Mrs. Potts in the 1991 Disney animated classic Beauty and the Beast, and her 12-year run starring on Murder She Wrote, CBS’ mystery series that ran from 1984 through 1996. More recently, Lansbury has worked most extensively in the theater.
It’s not hard to see Lansbury fitting well in the Game of Thrones world, which has had a number of high-profile British actors join its cast (and later leave when their characters are horribly killed off). Lansbury brings a certain gravitas to just about any role that she takes on, and a series that has done much work – especially in the last year – to highlight its female characters, from Daenerys to Lyanna Mormont, can only continue to do so by adding one of the most accomplished actresses in history – assuming this claim proves to be accurate.
Now, what role she may be playing, or which plotline she fits into, will certainly lead to much speculation. Will Lansbury meet Daenerys somewhere along the way? Will she play the mother or grandmother of a previous character, out for revenge? The lady of a previously obscure house or castle? The first woman maester? We’ll find out next summer, if not sooner.

[h=1]Game of Thrones: 2 Key Characters Possibly Returning for Season 7[/h]

[Potential MILD SPOILERS for Game of Thrones season 7 ahead.]–
Leading up to the premiere of Game of Thrones season 7 later next summer, there has been plenty of information steadily forthcoming in regards to what scripts that been hyped as getting “very dark before it gets better” over the course of the show’s final two seasons. It remains to be seen in just what direction the beloved fantasy series will take going forward in seasons 7 and 8, though based on all accounts heard thus far showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have things thoroughly under control.
Despite the fact that the HBO show has gone far beyond the narrative material covered in author George R.R. Martin’s original A Song of Ice and Fire cycle of novels, Benioff and Weiss have proven that their small screen take on Game of Thrones is every bit as thrilling as Martin’s prose. Following recent word that has celebrated British actor Jim Broadbent (Hot Fuzz) joining the cast in season 7, things are looking up as the show begins winding its way down towards what is sure to be a thrilling conclusion in season 8. What’s more, the latest news is that two key characters might be making their return to the series next year, too.
Per Comic Book , longtime series actors Iain Glen and Joe Dempsie have been spotted on location in Belfast, leading many to assume that their respective characters, Jorah Mormont and Gendry, will be making a return to Game of Thrones in season 7. The last viewers saw of Jorah was when his beloved Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) urged him to singlehandedly seek out a cure for his recently contracted greyscale affliction in season 6. As for Gendry, viewers last caught a glimpse of him in Dragonstone, when Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunnigham) set him adrift in a row boat after a brief encounter with potential ritual sacrifice at the hands of the Red Woman, Melisandre (Carice van Houten).

Just where longtime viewers can expect to see Jorah (Glenn) and Gendry (Dempsie) next is still up in the air, though it might be safe to venture guesses that Jorah’s expedition in search of a cure for greyscale might be depicted, while Gendry may have found his way back to the Brotherhood Without Banners (according to evidence from the books). Either way, fans will probably be eager to discover what the two characters have been up to in the interim since they were last seen (provided they actually end up making appearence in season 7).
Any appearence from the long absent Gendry (Dempsie) is sure to be met with plenty of eager anticipation from fans who have been wondering what had become of the bastard son of former King Robert Baratheon – especially considering his reentrance could signal another viable heir to the Iron Throne in King’s Landing. Furthermore, Jorah (Glenn) has always been a consistently sympathetic protagonist to root for, making the potential return of the two characters something to hope for in season 7 of Game of Thrones.

[h=1]Game of Thrones Season 7 Cast Adds Two More Actors[/h]

Ever since Game of Thrones formally began production on its seventh season last month, there have been occasional reports about casting of new characters for the show. Some of them – such as that of Jim Broadbent joining the cast – turned out to be true, while others, like the supposed casting of Angela Lansbury, were eventually denied by all involved.
Still, the series is likely going to be exploring new realms of Westeros in the coming season, from Oldtown to various spots along the the Khaleesi’s planned invasion route, and that most likely means quite a few new, never-before-seen characters. We’ve already heard reports about the casting call sheet of the new season, and now we have a new report of two actors who have been added to the cast.
According to the Game of Thrones fan site Watchers on the Wall, citing agency CVs, Joseph Quinn will be appeared on the show as a character named “Koner,” while Irish actor Paul Ward will be appearing in the new season in an unnamed role. Quinn is British, while Ward is Irish.
Joseph Quinn (R) in Dickensian

Quinn, best known for the BBC series Dickensian, while Ward has had small guest appearances in both Vikings and Penny Dreadful. There’s not much clue as to what characters the two new actors will be playing; the site suggests that perhaps one or two both parts fit with previously announced casting notices for guards, lords and other new characters. The name of Quinn’s character isn’t much of a clue, as there’s no character named “Koner” in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, nor in any ancillary material to date.
Unless you’re a die-hard fan of the shows that they appeared in, neither Quinn nor Ward is a particularly familiar name, although it’s worth noting that the vast majority of actors who have excelled on Game of Thrones, even in relatively major roles, were less than well-known to general audiences prior to their involvement in the show.
There are certainly enough bit-parts in each new Game of Thrones season that both Ward and Quinn could be playing very minor characters, but it’s worth keeping an eye out for them both when the show returns next year. Hopefully there will be a few more major casting reveals between now and then.

Game of Thrones Showrunners Confirm 6-Episode Season 8

Just last week, HBO made viewers eager to know when the penultimate season of Game of Thrones would premiere sit through a social media stunt in which flames slowly melted a block of ice. The stunt was met with a mixed response, as most fans just wanted the news of when the adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire would finally be back on their screens for a shortened seventh season. After an arduous wait, the midsummer premiere date was finally confirmed along with a teaser for ‘The Great War’ that’s on the horizon.
That quick tease was almost enough to make you forget there are only a handful of episodes left in the entire series, with the upcoming season comprised of a mere seven episodes. But while it’s already a foregone conclusion that season 7 will be a few episodes shy of the show’s typical 10-episode installments, some speculation persisted that co-showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff might yet opt to have the eighth and finale season run a bit longer. After all, not long ago, HBO president Casey Bloys said,“They’re still figuring it out because I think they’re trying to get a shape of the season. They always do what they think [will yield] the best version of the show. It’s all about how many they’re comfortable [with]. But I’ll always take more.”

As it turns out, Weiss and Benioff will be going the less-is-more route with season 8. The duo recently confirmed at SXSW (via EW) the final season of Game of Thrones will clock in at a scant six episodes. Speaking rather matter-of-factly, Benioff said:
“It’s only going to be six episodes for the final season.”

The news, coupled with the fact that the show is also coming to an end, will likely be a bitter pill to swallow for most fans. Still it’s nice that the creators aren’t interested in stretching the series’ final run to fit a prescribed or corporate-mandated episode count. While Bloys said he would always take more episodes, seeing the premium channel grant Weiss and Benioff the creative freedom to end the series on their (truncated) terms is a positive sign that Game of Thrones will reach its conclusion without having to turn to unnecessary filler before announcing who will sit atop the Iron Throne.
Besides, as Kit Harington recently said, there are advantages to using a smaller episode count, as some of the show’s already impressive per-episode budget can be funneled into creating grander special effects and more bombastic action sequences. While many fans will likely say they’ll take more episodes over larger set pieces, it just comes down to the story Weiss and Benioff have left to tell. It may not be the most popular choice, but it seems it’ll only take then 13 episodes until the series is done.

Game of Thrones season 6 premieres on Sunday, July 16 @9pm on HBO.

Excellent new trailer. Damn this really is the best show in the history of television.

I think Sansa is talking about Benjen when she mentions the lone wolf. Jon will need saving beyond the Wall after his encounter with the Night King.

Bloody brilliant stuff. So excited.

would have been better if they just made a 13 or 15 ep final season
Late quote but.. the episodes are longer. Especially the final 2 (season 7).
