[h=1]‘Game of Thrones’: Characters Who Don’t Die in Books Will Die in Season 5[/h]

If there’s one thing Game of Thrones is known for (besides its critically acclaimed storytelling and memorable characters, that is), it’s the show’s tendency to kill off characters both great and small in service of the larger tale at hand. In fact, the show’s ever-increasing body count has arguably made the series the very epitome of TV spoiler warnings.

However, for fans of the George R.R. Martin A Song of Ice and Fire book series on which the show is based, Games of Thrones‘ various twists and turns haven’t been nearly as shocking. After all, this is a story that has been told before, and there’s no reason to think the show would veer so far away from its source material as to take out anyone particularly integral to the main story. Not anymore.

Making a surprise appearance at the Writers Guild West Awards, Martin himself made a bold claim about season 5 of Games Thrones. According to Showbiz411, here’s what the author had to say:

“People are going to die who don’t die in the books, so even the book readers will be unhappy. So everybody better be on their toes. [The show's co-creators] David [Benioff] and D.B. [Weiss] are even bloodier than I am.”

Considering that a number of the show’s primary cast recently signed up through season 7, fans might be primed and ready to breathe a sigh of relief. However, the fact that the show is also set to include flashbacks in the upcoming season may be setting the stage for several noteworthy deaths. Going forward, even if an actor is contracted to appear, there are no guarantees that his or her character will still be an active participant in the latest happenings in Westeros.

We know that Martin already has an endgame in mind for the book series, and it’s almost certain that he’s communicated at least some of those details to the showrunners so that they can plan their narrative accordingly. However, anyone who isn’t absolutely essential to how the story comes together would, presumably, be fair game for the Game of Thrones creators to kill off.

There’s always the chance that even characters that feature heavily in the story’s conclusion could simply see their roles transferred to other characters, but smart money is that Game of Thrones will keep Martin’s select few free from an untimely demise.

[h=1]‘Game of Thrones’ Season 5 Plot Synopses for First 3 Episodes Revealed[/h]

[SPOILERS ahead for those not caught up on Game of Thrones.]-
Winter is coming for everyone on Game of Thrones, but what will happen to each character in season 5 is a bit of a mystery. Source material author George R.R. Martin recently revealed that the upcoming season of the hit HBO series could make some significant departures from his “A Song of Ice and Fire” books. Reportedly, characters who haven’t died yet in the novels may not make it out of this season alive, while others like Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) won’t even show up at all.

So it’s anybody’s guess as to how this season will play out. But when we last saw Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), the warrior queen was still learning the ropes of how to be a proper ruler. Meanwhile at the wall, Jon (Kit Harington) witnessed King Mance Rayder (Ciarán Hinds) being captured by Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane); and in King’s Landing, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) had murdered his father Tywin (Charles Dance) before fleeing. And elsewhere, Arya (Maisie Williams) boarded a ship for Braavos.

Fortunately, we do have a few clues as to what will happen in season 5, thanks to new plot synopses for the first three episodes:
Episode #41: “The Wars to Come”: Cersei and Jaime adjust to a world without Tywin. Varys reveals a conspiracy to Tyrion. Dany faces a new threat to her rule. Jon is caught between two kings. (Written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss; directed by Michael Slovis.) (TV-MA) [AC, AL, GV, N] ESP Playdates: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 24
Episode #42: “The House of Black and White”: Arya arrives in Braavos. Pod and Brienne run into trouble on the road. Cersei fears for her daughter’s safety in Dorne as Ellaria Sand seeks revenge for Oberyn’s death. Stannis tempts Jon. An adviser tempts Dany. (Written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss; directed by Michael Slovis.) (TVMA) [AC, AL, V] ESP Playdates: 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25
Episode #43: “High Sparrow”: In Braavos, Arya sees the Many-Faced God. In King’s Landing, Queen Margaery enjoys her new husband. Tyrion and Varys walk the Long Bridge of Volantis. (Written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss; directed by Mark Mylod.) (TV-MA) [AC, AL, GV, N] ESP Playdates: 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30

The synopses, of course, don’t give away much of the plot. Instead, they keep details to a minimum, while confirming that the various storylines of season 4 will continue where they left off. It seems Daenerys’ problems ruling Meereen will only get worse, while Jon will find himself at a crossroads when it comes to determining where his true loyalties lie.

Still there are some exciting moments coming up ahead. ‘The House of Black and White’ will see Arya in a new location with new adventures and joining the guild of the Faceless Men. And ‘High Sparrow’ will introduce the eponymous character, High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce), the leader of the Faith of the Seven. What do you think of the synopses, Screen Rant readers – are you excited for all the new locations and characters in season 5?

Game of Thrones season 5 begins airing on April 12th, 2015.

[h=1]‘Game of Thrones’ Season 5 Images Feature Arya’s New Costume, The Sand Snakes & More[/h]

The times they are definitely a changing in Westeros and Essos: Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is getting ready to conquer the world and she has the firepower (pun!) to do it; there’s a new King in King’s Landing, but who knows how long that will last; and in the north, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) realizes that time is quickly running out, before Winter arrives at long last – and by Winter, we mean the massive army of White Walkers.
Indeed, there are very exciting times ahead on Game of Thrones, as various pieces continue to maneuver around the board. Certain still-living players won’t even be making an appearance during the show’s story-packed fifth season, while some of the minor ones might not be as safe as even those who’ve read George R.R. Martin source novels would believe. Some of the main characters will even be crossing paths at last, in the episodes that lie ahead.

David Benioff, who shares showrunner responsibilities on Game of Thrones with Dan Weiss, teased just that when he was interviewed by EW, as he said that “Worlds are colliding” on the fantasy series’ fifth season. So much has already been alluded in the marketing for season five (to mention nothing of leaked set photos), but the four seasons of build-up have already done their part to generate excitement among those watching the show. And Benioff says those who make the series are just as thrilled to have reached this point (see his quote below).
“One of the things we’ve been most excited about from the beginning of the series is we’ve had all these far-flung story lines across Westeros and Essos which almost never cross. Now some of these characters start to head on a collision course for each other.”
Certain players are indeed moving on a collision course right now – such as Daenerys and the exile/fugitive Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) – while others are striking out on their own; to be exact, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), who’s headed off to Braavos to train and become an assassin. Game of Thrones award-winning costume designer Michele Clapton’s conceptual art for Arya’s season five outfit was released a while back, but now you can an early look at the real thing – along with other key players featured in EW‘s Thrones-themed magazine covers (including, Clarke, Dinklage, and Harington), seen below.

Williams has already weighed in with her own thoughts on Arya’s makeover: from her short-haired and generally unkempt appearance during the past three seasons (much of which she spent with The Hound) to her much cleaner, stylized, and overall cool stealth-assassin look. As she told EW:
“It’s very neutral, very plain, but clean! I have clean hair that actually moves. I came onto the set and nobody recognized me.”
And speaking of stylishly-dressed, deadly young women: a previously-released behind the scenes video - one highlighting the weapon design for Game of Thrones season five – shone a light on the Sand Snakes: the daughters of the late Dorne prince – and fan-favorite – Oberyn “The Red Viper” Martell (Pedro Pascal). There’s the bullwhip-wielding Nymeria (Jessica Henwick); spear-fighter Obara (Keisha Castle-Hughes); and the youngest of the trio, Tyene (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers), whose weapon of choice is a pair of daggers.
As has been noted by Castle-Hughes (again, via EW):
“We haven’t seen women like this on Game of Thrones before. You have lone wolves like Arya and Brienne [played by Gwendoline Christie], and others like Daenerys or Cersei [played by Lena Headey], who are politically strong surrounded by men. But you haven’t seen women who are strong together and who collaborate – which is a dangerous thing. We’re three girls who are violent and manipulative who are thirsty for Lannister blood.”
On that note, we have new pictures of all three Sand Snakes for you to peruse over, below:

[h=1]‘Game of Thrones’: George R. R. Martin Not Writing Any Season 6 Episodes[/h]

HBO’sGame of Thrones has done a remarkable job of translating itself from book to screen. The incredibly successful TV show – originally based off the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R. R. Martin – has been able to seemingly please both fans of the original source material as well as the newcomers who only watch the show. A lot of that has to do with how faithful the series has been to the brutal and deep fantasy novels (some would argue that the series has improved upon some of the novels’ decisions at points), but a lot of that also has to do with how involved and vocal Marton has been with his support of the show.

Martin has not only moderated several of the Comic-Con panels for Game of Thrones and consulted on the series’ direction and story for the showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, he’s also written one episode each season. These tend to be pivotal episodes to each season’s arc (last season he wrote the infamous Purple Wedding episode), and involve sequences that might be harder to adapt from the novels than others (again – the Purple Wedding).

However, Martin recently revealed on his LiveJournal page that he will not be penning a single episode for the sixth season of the show. Martin revealed the following regarding the decision:

“[A]fter wrestling with it for a month or so, I’ve decided not to script an episode for season six of GAME OF THRONES. Writing a script takes me three weeks, minimum, and longer when it is not a straight adaptation from the novels. And really, it would cost me more time than that, since I have never been good at changing gears from one medium to another and back again. Writing a season six script would cost me a month’s work on WINDS, and maybe as much as six weeks, and I cannot afford that. With David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Bryan Cogman on board, the scriptwriting chores for season six should be well covered. My energies are best devoted to WINDS.”

While this might disappoint some Thrones fans – it shouldn’t necessarily shock them either. Martin also stayed away from writing an episode in the upcoming fifth season as well, due to his (slow) work on the next novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise - The Winds of Winter. It also makes a lot of sense considering that this upcoming season and the other two(?) seasons following will not be direct adaptations of the books. Why? Because they will officially be taking place ahead of what has been published in the novels up to this point.

George R.R. Martin and star Peter Dinklage

Fans have known for a while now that this new season of Game of Thrones will be diverging from the novel in a lot of ways. In fact, the show caught up with some of the characters’ storylines in the novels by the end of the last season – which led to some of them being excluded from the fifth. It wouldn’t make sense to have Martin devote time to writing an episode for a series that takes place ahead of what he’s written, when the main reason for having him write an episode of the show (besides just having him included in the process more) is to make sure it is an accurate adaptation from the novels.

This most likely won’t affect many opinions of the series because Benioff and Weiss have proven they are more than capable of taking matters into their own hands when it comes to the story in the show and they already know from Martin what the plan is for the conclusion of the story. It was also confirmed recently that the series would be spoiling the novels for book readers, which had already been suspected up until this point – and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This upcoming fifth season will prove once and for all how well Benioff and Weiss can do taking this story and making it theirs because the odds are this season will be end up being more of a continuation than an adaptation.

The fifth season of Game of Thronesis set to premiere Sunday, April 12, 2015 on HBO.

[h=1]‘Game of Thrones’: George R.R. Martin Releases ‘The Winds of Winter’ Excerpt[/h]

[WARNING: This post will contain SPOILERS for 'Game of Thrones' through season 4 and previously-released sample chapters from 'The Winds of Winter.']

The relationship between novel and adaptation is going to get even trickier, now that Game of Thrones‘ producer David Benioff has confirmed that the HBO series will spoil events from the as-of-yet unpublished novels on which it is based. The warning upset some fans – particular those who would rather experience what comes next on the page than the screen – but given just how slowly author George R.R. Martin releases his novels, the conflict wasn’t entirely unexpected.

It was previously confirmed that the sixth novel in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series would not release this year; in fact, Martin has not penned an episode for season 5 (having previously written one episode per season) and may skip San Diego Comic-Con altogether in order to focus on completing his next novel, The Winds of Winter.

Either to satiate fans or simply to prove he has indeed written some part of The Winds of Winter already, Martin has made a habit over the years of releasing chapter excerpts from the unpublished novel. Some are available online, while others have been read aloud by Martin at convention appearances and later transcribed by fans (for those interested, Tor has an updated listing of all the released chapters and where to find them).

Today, Martin released yet another excerpt to coincide with the premiere of Game of Thrones season 5 in a little over a week. This latest chapter comes from the point of view of Alayne Stone – better known to television viewers as Sansa Stark.

Contrary to what happens on the show, Sansa assumes the identity of Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish’s bastard daughter, instead of his niece. Her true identity has not yet been revealed, and she will continue masquerading as Alayne until Littlefinger decides the precise moment to reintroduce her as Sansa Stark, heir to Winterfell.

Read an excerpt of Alayne’s chapter below:

“Come,” Petyr said, “walk with me.” He took her by the arm and led her deeper into the vaults, past an empty dungeon. “And how was your first meeting with Harry the Heir?”
“He’s horrible.”
“The world is full of horrors, sweet. By now you ought to know that. You’ve seen enough of them.”
“Yes,” she said, “but why must he be so cruel? He called me your bastard. Right in the yard, in front of everyone.”
“So far as he knows, that’s who you are. This betrothal was never his idea, and Bronze Yohn has no doubt warned him against my wiles. You are my daughter. He does not trust you, and he believes that you’re beneath him.”
“Well, I’m not. He may think he’s some great knight, but Ser Lothor says he’s just some upjumped squire.”
Petyr put his arm around her. “So he is, but he is Robert’s heir as well. Bringing Harry here was the first step in our plan, but now we need to keep him, and only you can do that. He has a weakness for a pretty face, and whose face is prettier than yours? Charm him. Entrance him. Bewitch him.”
“I don’t know how,” she said miserably.
“Oh, I think you do,” said Littlefinger, with one of those smiles that did not reach his eyes. “You will be the most beautiful woman in the hall tonight, as lovely as your lady mother at your age. I cannot seat you on the dais, but you’ll have a place of honor above the salt and underneath a wall sconce. The fire will be shining in your hair, so everyone will see how fair of face you are. Keep a good long spoon on hand to beat the squires off, sweetling. You will not want green boys underfoot when the knights come round to beg you for your favor.”

You can find the full text of the new chapter on Martin’s website.

Over the course of the show, Sansa has grown quite a bit from the young, naive girl who first arrived in King’s Landing. Since then she’s witnessed her father’s beheading, been beaten and humiliated, and wed against her will to a Lannister. Her experiences have far from broken her, and Sansa is quickly proving herself a very capable player in the dangerous game of thrones.

Some of that credit, however, belongs to Littlefinger and his tutelage in the ways of manipulation. The pair’s relationship will continue to evolve over the course of season 5, something that actress Sophie Turner admits will seem very creepy” to some viewers. Don’t worry too much for Sansa, however, because before too long she may prove capable of outwitting even Littlefinger and securing her own position as a powerful figure in Westeros.

Game of Thrones premieres April 12th, 2015 on HBO. A release date for The Winds of Winter has not yet been announced.
