Synopsis: "Fuyuki City is the setting for a secret and violent war among competing magi. For the past two centuries, seven sorcerers have gathered and engage in a battle royale known as the Holy Grail War, each gambling his or her own life to obtain the Holy Grail, a legendary chalice capable of granting wishes. The past four Holy Grail Wars have typically occurred every sixty years or so. However, the fifth war has started prematurely, with the most recent concluding less than a decade ago.

The seven sorcerers, known as Masters, are aided by seven beings known as Servants, reincarnations of legendary heroes from all time. These resurrected souls possess superhuman characteristics and wield powerful artifacts or abilities called Noble Phantasms, symbols of their heroism during life. Anyway, the first episode streams today. Though I'll be waiting for it to go on torrents.

Just finished watching the prologue, my thoughts so far:

Animation is great, the backgrounds are crisp and the animation is fluid as expected of Ufotable.

The music really set up the mood, although I did recognize one of the tracks being recycled from Fate/Zero. The metal-on-metal sound effects in the fight scene were a bit sharper this time compared to F/Z, and gave the fight scene a really weighty feel.

The episode was well paced and closely followed the VN, which is miles better compared to DEEN's abrupt and shoddy opening. As expected, the overall vibe is a lot more light-hearted than F/Z and doesn't feel as rushed.

Still a bit early to judge, but so far so good...

well they made some of the things abt the episode alittle longer but overall thts how u fully understand and take sides wid the characters
the fighting animations are splendid like amazing this time .. lovin those smooth n fast moments , the story itself is gng really gr8 cant wait for the ep2

Finished both episodes. The two perspective episodes were really good, ufotable still showing how they're the best animator out there.
Loved all the little hints and cameos to all the things to come. I wonder how closely this will follow the tone of F/Z.

Episode 0 was great. It started off slow and picked up gradually. The animation is on a league of its own. This might be the best looking anime show yet, hell it even blows away most good looking anime movies. It's not just the animation that looks amazing, the overall depth of the show is top notch. Everything is so engrossing, from the poetic enchantments that Tohsaka recites to the cloth and hair movement of someone who's on a high rise. It's like someone actually put thought into the scenes, and it honestly just makes other animations look sloppy and lazy.

Episode 1 was equally great but it raised some concerns. There's a bunch of trope characters in the show that seem really abrupt and out of place. Coming from Fate/Zero, I can't think of any trope characters in that show (maybe Iskander, but at least he showed complex emotions the majority of the time). And now in Fate/stay night, they suddenly show up. It's a really jarring experience when you think about it.

Are these people going to be the norm? Fate/Zero had a certain air to it when it came to its characters. Some of them were exotic, but they were pretty well grounded overall. There was a happy psycopath, a loud and macho conqueror, a pompous ruler of all, a sob story, a conniving anti-hero pseudo-protagonist, a "Muh Ideals" moron, etc. All of them were special and unique, but in an interesting way that made you want to see more of their character. Now we have a tsundere schoolgirl wanting to get noticed by her senpai, a pretty boy low-life, a loud and annoying teacher, a three person trope group consisting of a loud and annoying girl trope, a quiet and smart girl trope, and a third girl (trope unknown, trope might just be being the third girl), there's also shit head Shirou with his retard of justice dribble, and now "Muh Ideals" moron is back. It's like they cut the most generic trope characters from any garbage tier anime like Naruto or whatever and pasted those tropes in F/Z's world.

All of these characters really make me doubt that F/sn is gonna have the same plot and character developments that F/Z had. Can Ufotable please use their amazing animation skills to erase these trope characters? They're a real bother.

There's going to be a definite tone shift from F/Z to Stay night, you're going from a battle royal between seven great mages to a fight between teenagers. It's not going to be as dark as F/Z or have all the different character perspectives that F/Z had but we really can't fault it for that, at the end of the day it is but a mere adaptation of a VN.

Sakura isn't tsundere, but eh she's not going to be in the anime any longer. Shinji's a pretty decent* character, if he's "fleshed" out correctly and hopefully ufotable can do that. You need the annoying teacher and the trope group for the comedy, and this is the first time I'm seeing the trope group myself they weren't in the VN.

Shirou is a really strong character, and this is the route that shows it, I'd say why but that would spoil quite a bit so just wait for a few more episodes & trust in ufotable.

*Shinji is a piece of shit, but he's a piece of shit that you can understand.

This has a lot to do with the contrasting writing styles. I personally love what Urobutchi did with the Fate series, not only did he add his own little twist to it but he managed to fix quite a few fundamental flaws from Nasu's writing style. But that isn't to say that Nasu lacks any characterization whatsoever. At points, there is some pretty good characterization and even some good underlying qualities to these characters but because of the way they act and behave on the surface, it can be very hard to digest.

F/SN will definitely not have the same level of developments as F/Z and that's to be expected frankly. But it will hold up on it's own.

Episode 2 felt a little awkward because of that info-dump scene in the middle, hopefully there aren't much more of these. You can definitely feel a change in the pacing going from 50 min prologues to 30 min episodes.

They cut out a few lines of dialogue from the church scene that gave Kotomine a sinister vibe, not sure how this will affect the over-all anime.

I forgot how not garbage Shirou was in this route, and I really like the opening and the new costume designs. Can't wait for the next fight.
