Codemasters has announced that the PC version of its off-road racer, Colin McRae: DiRT 2, is being delayed until December to incorporate the features of DirectX 11.
The console versions - 360, PS3, Wii, DS and PSP - will retain their September release date.
Hardware supporting Microsoft's latest DirectX API is expected to appear in the second half of this year, with DirectX 11 itself appearing alongside Windows 7 (and as an update to Windows Vista) on October 22nd.

Codemasters expects the appearance of water and other surfaces to be improved, crowd animations to be better and depth of field and shadow effects to be superior thanks to support for Shader Model 5.0 and hardware tessellation.

"We believe that the DirectX 11 feature set is too compelling to ignore, especially considering how much more it can add to the visual experience for PC gamers," said Bryan Marshall, Codemasters' chief technical officer. "The fusion of DirectX 11 with Codemasters' EGO Engine will raise the technical bar considerably in the racing genre."

These things can also be used in DX10 mode. But i must say a very good strategy to promote DX11.

Yep, a definite strategy to promote DX11 GPUs and Win 7... And i'm damn sure it will not utilize the DX11 to is full potential (provided there's any potential).

the only difference i've seen on direct x 10 is that performance remains good with aa on,
graphics wise, i only noticed difference in assassin's creed,
in desmonds lab room, the buildings outside the windows were brightened out and blurred in dx9 but
were very clear in dx10. and now we are getting dx11, which i think will only be there for performance
improvement, don't expect better eye candy.

That's quite a promotional strategy.......

Even they would like Dirt 2 to be Dx 11 compatible.
It would still look as same as the Next-Gen console version....

Definite blow to those guys that thought DX11 was coming in late 2010

while it promotes dx11, i think people are not going to buy dx10 cards and save money for a upgrade.

also people with dx 10.1 cards might be able to use some of dx11 options.

Such a stupid reason. Don't developers have access to DX11 right now?

They don't need to wait for arrival of DX11 for consumers. They can incorporate a setting only for DX11 and then release the game at the same time as the console parts. People who don't have DX11 hardware and software can run the game right now and DX11 settings will become available to them when they get new hardware.

Or if they have to wait for DX11 themselves then they can release the game simultaneously and incorporate DX11 later through a patch.

time for poor pc gamers to shell out more dough!..and it would take zoomed in screenshots of the games lined up side by side to tell them the 'difference' betwween the two versions of dx and finally put their minds at ease.

History goes against the development of DX over the years (dx9 --> dx10)... but it really depends which devs are working on it. Chances are few, but there might be noticeable difference between dx10 and d11. Even then, its just another strategy to support Win 7. MS needs to get out of their desperation to revive their OS sales through such lame means badly. E.g. I was laughing my ass out at Vista when Very High settings were acheivable under XP in Crysis which proved the 'need' for Vista absolutely false. Heres to hoping such a tweak would be found by hackers for this game too :wink2:
