German videogames magazine “Gamestar” has reported that Crytek is in big trouble and that it may go bankrupt.
According to Gamestar, the adoption of CRYENGINE is not going well and the word-of-mouth at GDC was negative. Strangely enough, CRYENGINE is currently one of the most optimized engines, so Crytek should really look into its subscription prices otherwise this amazing engine may never be used by other triple-A developers.
Not only that, but Gamestar claims that the development of Ryse was catastrophic for the studio. Just mere months before its release, the game was severely behind and Crytek was able to complete it with additional manpower. And from what we’ve seen thus far, Ryse did not sell as good as Crytek hoped (especially for a console exclusive).
Things are definitely not looking good for Crytek and while Avni Yerli claimed that a cash injection for the company is finally imminent (with a contract to be signed really soon), a lot of big publishers are waiting for a possible bankrupt in order to sign the talent and shop the IPs from Crytek.
For what is worth, Wargaming is listed as a possible buyer of Crytek. If Wargaming does buys Crytek, we can kiss goodbye to all of the studio’s single-player games (as Wargaming is best known for its Free-To-Play games). In short, this may be the end of the Crytek we knew.
But what has happened and the team is facing this major financial issues? According to Yerli, there were “dramatized rumors” from disgruntled ex-employers, something that obviously had a negative impact to Crytek’s public image. Additionally, Crytek has more than 800 employees (a number so huge that explains the company’s possible financial issues). Moreover, Gamestar reported that salaries were paid late and leading employees were sending applications to other studios at home and abroad. And if that wasn’t enough, Warface was only successful in Russia and Crytek’s G-face platform was a big flop.
In short, Crytek is currently in deep trouble and we don’t know whether the studio will be able to recover. And yes, PC gamers can now say to Crytek “We told you so, you had to keep Crysis exclusive to the PC and keep pushing the graphical boundaries.”

Can't say I'm surprised. Switching to a free-to-play model hasn't done them any favors. The Crysis series has been on a downward spiral in terms of quality and sales, and EA has distanced itself from it altogether. Ryse was a disaster. With the exception of CIG and The Chinese Room, hardly any known developer has licensed CryEngine; so, no meaningful revenue from there either. There had to be a point where they simply couldn't afford to run a 700 strong studio any longer.

Meanwhile, Ryse resulting in the Fall of the studio. MAXIMUM IRONY.

CryEngine should live somehow, it's a thing of MAXIMUM BEAUTY.

Welp, can't say this is shocking. None of Crytek's games have been looking that great for the past few years. This is what happens when all you churn out is polished turds.

I find it highly disgraceful for such a brilliant company to see that road. While i do agree that they need to revise their policies on Cry Engine 3 (its one of the best engines anyway, without a doubt), i feel they also need new Leadership. Maybe dear Yerli has gotten old and can't take effective decisions, or is too full of himself ... maybe.

That's a Damn shame. Oh well, this may be for the better. Crytek had a good run while it lasted... sad to see studios disband like this, but it is what it is.

Going by the logic in this thread Irrational Games was a poor developer and Bioshock Infinite was a turd lol

Crytek probably shouldn't have expanded to so many studios if they were having financial issues. Would be shame to lose one of the best FPS developers out there. Hopefully they can recover if this is true.

and EA has distanced itself from it altogether.
That has nothing to do with Crytek in particular. It was a result of the closure of the EA Partner's program division, which included many 3rd party developers.

With the exception of CIG and The Chinese Room, hardly any known developer has licensed CryEngine; so, no meaningful revenue from there either.
I'd argue Turtle Rock Studios, developers of L4D 1/2 and now Evolve, is more known than either of those developers.

Donno i m lost!!
it will be a shame if crytek goes bankrupt. their CryEngine has so much potential and its costs a fraction compared to the shitty Unreal Engine4. i guess their current state could be summed up to "a series of bad management decisions". personally i think they could have made a lot of $$$ from marketing their engine and providing constant tech support alone. oh well

To be honest, Unreal Engine 4 ain't doing great either this generation. Most of the devs will utilize their own in-house engine, and we won't see a repeat of Unreal domination like in the previous gen (and for all the good reason)

Absolutely unfathomable that they expanded to an 800-man army while fully aware of their recent games not being financially successful. Bad management and awful leadership for an otherwise decent studio.

From glorious FARCRY/Crysis 1 to blaming PC gamers to be pirates and ending up being XBOX exclusive devs.

There will be very few who will feel sorry if they go. They deserved it.

did you try setting up Google Payments? For UBL you may have to get it enabled for internet transactions, Naya should work without it!
