CA or ACCA?

So here I am guys, just appeared in my HSSC Part-II exams and with that, the fun times have ended; it's time to get serious about my career. The thing is I was born in a medical background family, so I was forced to take up Biology in 9th/10th even though I have always been into computer and other technical stuff (used to carry a few wires, bulb and a battery in my pocket all the time as a kid :p).

I got bad marks in Biology and made it pretty clear that I don't wanna take Pre-Med in Inter, so my dad allowed me to take Pre-Engg. Now the problem was I absolutely loved the practical aspects of it but hated the theory part especially physics and chemistry (what the hell am I going to do by learning how caustic soda is made by various methods? :p). Loved all the maths except calculus. Got only 67% in 1st year. So then I realized I couldn't continue with engineering either.

So after much discussion with by bro and dad I've decided to take up accounting; mainly because I find income, expenditure, tax etc very interesting; and partly because I've been regularly reading columns and articles about business and financial positions of big tech companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google etc and I love it.

So I've two choices in front of me - CA or ACCA. Now I'm pretty confused about these two. Asked a few people about it who were taking these courses, some loved their own course and some were cursing it. So what do you guys suggest? What's might be the scope of these two in 2-3 years time? I'm sure there will be a few of are doing either of two or already done, so any input will be greatly appreciated. I don't want to take this decision in a hurry and regret it later :D

P.S. I'm sure there might've been quite a few discussions here already, but I guess I'm too lazy to search :p

P.P.S I saluate you if you read this post till the end. That's the largest post I've ever written. :p

OK, so what about a combo of ACCA + then MBA?

If someone can briefly tell me the differences or scope of either ACCA or CA, it will be much appreciated. Unfortunately, I've to make a decision fast :(

well this has been discussed many times before, you should search it up.
if u want to study all your life then go for CA....
ACCA if u can work hard, cox if u do u get through....acca is recognized world wide + has better pay in other countries except for PAK,CA has far more pay here...monopoly of ICAP

are u ok ? its like ur sleeping while commenting on this topic dumb?
O dhakan ca is pakistan's one of most sublime qualificaton, eng n wales wholly exempt, australian working permit wd out delay. CA, quota system moha lol n was sleeping. A true dhakan

@threadmaker brother go for ca if you want challaging career. After four samesters you start to get handsome stipend alongwith reimbursement of books. Articleship has been reduced to 3.5 years which further reduces by 6 months if you pass in first attempt. Starting package is 60k plus car plus benefit. In uae package is 35k average. Wht u want more, all you have to burn your ass to get exam cleared n i think this what challanging career means

First off, Im ACCA Qualified and doing CA currently. Have Module E exams in December.

Now, @gesherbrum.. What sort of "handsome" stipend are you talking about? In CA, You study Module A to D in 2 years (4 semesters you can say) and after that you join a firm, and the policy for ALL ICAP trainees in firms is 6500rs stipend PER MONTH. I dont know how you can call that "handsome" stipend, my driver probably earns more than that. Plus dont forget if you are an Audit Trainee, you also have to go on saturdays and in some cases Sundays even and daily you come back at around 7-8 minimum DAILY.

Now at the topic, Well i was faced with the same situation a few years back and you can go through my posts in other topics regarding CA/ACCA as well. I decided to start with ACCA, since i never liked the local pakistani board. I dont like the way they set papers in Matric/Inter and after going through the CA past papers and syllabus, It looked similar to Inter/Matric (i.e rattafication system). Since i was O/A Level student, i opted for ACCA and i cleared ACCA alhamdullilah in first attempt in minimum time in 2 years. After that i claimed exemptions towards CA (at that time for ACCA students, Module a to d was exempt. Its not the same case now) and joined CA firm to complete 3.5 years CA training and to study towards module E and F and become CA qualified.

I would suggest you to assess your options carefully. No offense but since you dont seem to be the brightest of kids, you might have trouble if you go for CA. Its very tough and alot of people fail exams even in the starting modules. If you're really determined, Then go for CA. Otherwise go for ACCA. Its more expensive but its a little easier. However CA and ACCA covers essentially the same course plus ACCA has equal value to a CA in abroad countries (provided you have adequate experience with it as well).

Once you've done with your ACCA you can go for an MBA, You can also write a thesis and get the Bachelors Degree from Oxford Brookes through the ACCA program. You cant do CA after ACCA now because they have reduced the exemptions for ACCA in CA so now you dont get complete exemption from A to D modules.

Good Luck !

I used to get a1940 n its now 6500 around four times increase over a period of eight year. Pls dnt compare your stipend with salary of your driverl, its stipend nit salary. Rest of stuff you said i agree, except one thing that acca=ca globally. Whereas i believe ca>acca.
Lastly pls clarify to that dhakan that there is no quota system

Increase is because of increase in the minimum wage.. :p
Anyways, Ask around in UK, If people see you doing ICAEW after ACCA, they ask you why have you done the same thing twice. Plus look at the job market in UK and other countries, Almost every job for an Accountant is advertised as requiring ICAEW/ACCA, But yeah i agree over here in Pakistan CA is more powerful which is why im also doing it after doing ACCA.

Cant say anything about Quota system but there is no established passing requirement. You dont pass at 50% in CA. If paper is easy you might pass at 80% or at 20% if its difficult.. its all at the discretion of ICAP

Its not discretion of ICAP they have announced 50% passing marks. They have to be stick with it INSHA ALLAH when you would qualify and sit inot council you would come to know what students do in thier sheets. i have been this profession since last thirteen years and what my conclusion regarding failuers is that students donot realize the mistakes they commit into examination, whcih ultimately lead to failuer. ICAP even has come down to paper to paper passing criteria and has recently allowed 15 min just to read out, open book policy. Yar what more you want.

And that dhakan who even does not the meaning of ICAP has come up with the argument that dus dus attempt say log fail ho rahey hey, donot know to whom students that dhakan associated with. Pls do tell him quota system is connected with the admission of subject matter not the passing. Seriously a ture dhakan.

I am also engaged in the CA program for quite a while now. My opinion about the two fields is that u really need to be a bookworm in order to pass your exams. Specially in case of CA where you have to attempt 100% questions in the paper without any choice and strict passing criteria. Once you qualify upto Module D (CA Intermediate) you have to work as a Trainee in a firm which make things more complicated as you don't get much time to concentrate on your studies.
But if you look at the other side of the picture, these two degrees offer you huge market opportunities globally. If you want to take an easy path,MBA Finance would be a better option specially if you get admission in a renowned institute.

so dhakan you completed your CA inter into two years, (30 percent students do so i m of them dhakan) it means you are now doing article ship pls tell me name of your firm (just for GK) and if you are not doing it means that you spent two years (If in first attempt) in CA now intend to compelete ACCA into two years its four years. Again four or five years. So if you had to do ACCA then why first completed the CA Inter.????????? and after this you mind to be called "Dhakan", oh i got this you were afraid of "Quota System" of ICAP            yar you are a real dhakan

My current salary is in six digit :) you know why because i m not dhakan
