KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to ban instant messaging and voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) clients Skype, Viber and other networks such as Tango for three months in the province for security reasons, Express News reported on Thursday.


The decision was taken during a meeting between Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and other officials including the additional IG Karachi, DG Rangers and representatives of intelligence agencies.

How do they ban Apps/Softwares like Viber & Skype, ain't these Internet based? I mean you'd need an Internet connection to run these, did they block Internet connections/ISPs in Karachi?

Nope it doesn't work like that. Apps like these use specific protocols, the govt just has to ask the major Internet providers to block those protocols. It's nothing major, my university blocks Skype like this too.

Anyway coming back to the topic, this is just plain shitty on the government's side, I mean first YouTube and now this. They don't even have a proper excuse for this. I bet they won't block the blackberry services because all the elite class and politicians use that but this they block.

If terrorists know how to use whatsapp, viber and skype. I seriously doubt how they can't know the other ways to communicate through internet.

The moments like this when you doubt the intelligence of the government and the intelligence agencies.

so what is the next step? ban internet? stop the use of mobile phones? staple our mouths so that we can't talk?

what is the proof that they won't do this stupidity again after the time period? its just old book tactics to make us hold our patience.

I wasn't praising their actions but atleast it's not like YouTube which has been blocked for over a year now.
