MS is in an odd situation.

One one hand, the Scorpio can't compete with the PS4/Pro's library of exclusives. Heck, it hardly has any exclusives left.

On the other hand, in terms of raw horsepower, it can't compete with a high-end PC, especially given its Jaguar-based (probably Puma) CPU. Target frame rates will remain the same across both Scorpio and Xbox One games, since they have to exist in the same ecosystem. It's no surprise that Forza 6, a game that already runs at 1080p/60fps on Xbox One, hits native 4K/60fps on Scorpio.

The only thing I can appreciate here is the bump to 12GB unified memory. But that obviously won't come for free. I don't see this costing less than $500, although MS may choose to bear a loss on each Scorpio sold and price it more aggressively at $400. That would make things a bit more interesting. Though, by the time it launches, Sony is undoubtedly dropping the Pro's price as well.

Never promised native 4k across the board but they are very vocal abt hitting that target with most games specially first party exclusives. There were no such indications by Sony for PS4 pro.
Forza was hitting 4k60fps with just 68% GPU utilization. That means something imo.

GPU utilization was close to 90% on Ultra settings. 68% was for XB1 equivalent settings at 4K. Lower GPU usage could also mean that the CPU is the bottleneck, that figure was conveniently not shown.

[h=1]Xbox Scorpio also ditches the Kinect port[/h]

[h=2]No word on whether Microsoft will comp the $40 adapter[/h]

The Xbox One S, as well as Xbox Scorpio, lacks the dedicated Kinect port and instead uses this USB port via an adapter Xbox Today’s Xbox Scorpio hardware specs reveal continues to erode Microsoft’s insistence that Kinect is an important part of the Xbox ecosystem. Like the Xbox One S before it, Scorpio is losing the dedicated Kinect port, replacing it with a $40 adapter that lets you use the peripheral with one of the console’s USB ports and an additional external power supply.
“Since port arrangement is based on Xbox One S, there's no return for the original Xbox One's Kinect port (a USB adapter is required) but the HDMI input is retained,” Digital Foundry writes in its Xbox Scorpio hardware reveal. That’s the only instance of the word Kinect across the article’s massive, 4,000-plus word count.
When the Xbox One S was released last August, more than two years after the Kinect was unbundled from the console, Microsoft offered a free adapter to users who had already purchased an Xbox One and an Xbox One Kinect. That offer expired last month. Microsoft issued Polygon the following statement:
Kinect will be compatible with Project Scorpio via the Xbox Kinect Adapter and the experience will not change due to the connection.
The Xbox Kinect Adapter program was a limited-time offer, in tandem with the launch of Xbox One S in August 2016, to ensure that gamers who own a Kinect for Xbox One could seamlessly enjoy all the same Kinect benefits on the Xbox One S via a free adapter. While the Xbox Kinect Adapter program is no longer being offered, the adapter will continue to be available for purchase at participating retailers, including Microsoft Store.
The $40 adapter needed to connect the Kinect to an Xbox One S and, it appears, the Xbox Scorpio Xbox Further discounting the company’s long-term enthusiasm for Kinect, Microsoft’s plans to include the adapter in new retail Kinect packages failed to come to fruition, and the adapter’s product page on Microsoft’s own store fails to point out the need for the USB adapter. This is a far cry from the formerly “integral” Kinect that the Xbox One launched with, and not everyone is happy about it.
Xbox One S is removing the Kinect port on the back of the system. If Scorpio is a more high-end system, I would like to see it include a Kinect port on the back of the box so we can continue to use the Kinect without taking up a USB port.

That’s from a feature request on Microsoft’s official feedback forum with nearly one thousand votes.

While Microsoft avoids discussion of Kinect for gaming — seriously, can you remember the last time you heard about a Kinect-enabled game? — it’s worked to integrate its Cortana digital assistant across the platform. While Cortana works with a headset microphone, the functionality is still focused on having a Kinect hooked up to your Xbox One.
But an expensive camera array seems like a complicated way to get voice controls on your Xbox One; contrast the $100 Kinect with the $50 Echo Dot, which adds Amazon’s Alexa integration to any room in your house. In less than three years, Alexa has become synonymous with voice-activated technology in the home, while Kinect remains something of a sore spot for Microsoft.
The Xbox One S added an IR blaster to obviate part of the Kinect’s utility. Xbox But perhaps Scorpio has plans in mind to continue the company’s retreat from Kinect. The Xbox One S added an IR blaster to begin to reduce the console’s dependence on the Kinect. The IR blaster replaces the Kinect’s IR functionality, which helped the Xbox One manage its control of the components connected through it, like cable boxes. The Xbox One S can do all of that, without the Kinect at all. We don’t know how else, if at all, Microsoft plans on obviating the Kinect.

Or maybe the target render really isn't that taxing on the hardware. It would help if DF could share the complete bechmark.

@Journeys End I have a question for you. Do you see yourself getting the Scorpio down the road at some point? If your answer is a "yes", I'd like to know why, given that you already have a capable PC (going by the specs you've listed) and almost all Xbox One games are/will be available on the Windows store.

Ur rite. At this moment, I don't see myself buying this as my PC is more than enough but then there are days when I really need my halo meds :D That is when I miss my XBO.
Although I m very impressed by DF's coverage of project Scorpio but MS will have to make the next halo console only if they want me to buy it.

People who wants the best out of their 4K displays and the best multiplatform experience without dealing with building a PC would benefit from Scorpio. And thats a huge chunk of the market. Those people wont care if next Halo goes to PC as well.

AKA people like myself. Though even if I decide to go for one, it will have to be next year.

Not fair to rule out that this was a port managed in 2 days with almost zero scorpio-specific optimizations. That 90% GPU utilization can easily be brought down with some effort.

I believe Richard has a dedicated video upcoming where he's going to discuss how scorpio handled ultra settings on Forza on this system.

if all games are running at 4k and the console price is somewhat close to ps4 pro.. it will FQ the PC Gaming MARKET.
Well in the end all of it would eventually be effected by the price point of the scorpio but i would have to disagree that this would affect the PC gaming market. I think if there would be any effect it would primarily be in the console market itself. I mean just look what encouraged you to get in to PS4, surely it was for the exclusives. For PC peeps the biggest selling point is performance and i think no console (closed hardware) will be able to match that. Plus the fact that all Xbox exclusive games can be played on the PC itself would be a reason not to buy a closed hardware for the PC crowd.

Although you can never know with MS but given the messaging from MS that this is for premium users, I am guessing this would be north of 500 bucks. At this prince point i think they are way too high for the median console market that is highly price sensitive. PS3's launch price misstep is evident of this.

Not at all. Xbox doesn't have the flexibility the PC platform offers which its audience wants. Native 4K would be impressive, but being stuck with 30FPS for majority of the games isn't something PC gamers would find tempting.

As with every new console hardware launch, the specs and the ability to "code to the metal" on a closed hardware is blown out of proportion. This has always been the case and I don't see any reason why it would change now. Real world results in games seldom surpass (if at all) what is theoretically possible.

MS has their version of "checker boarding" tech so they know many developers would opt for that rather than hitting native 4K where they want to push more eye candy or achieve stable frame rates. Anyone expecting native 4K on all modern graphically intensive titles is in for disappointment.

"DX12 built on the GPU", as we have learned now, is part of the feature set on the current Xbox 1/S as well. Scorpio has an evolved version of that, but I don't recall it doing any wonders for XB1 beyond what was expected from that machine.
