Like I said, if only ONE company out of the 2 is opting for this path, then...well. It's going to be a disaster for sure because Microsoft's OWN statistics show that barely 10% of the gamers who purchase legit games EVER take the game online. These are ofcourse average statistics because 70% or more COD buyers probably take the game online.

No one would be THAT stupid, after looking at these stats, to go for "always online".

Sony has a similar patent though: ELECTRONIC CONTENT PROCESSING SYSTEM, ELECTRONIC CONTENT PROCESSING METHOD, PACKAGE OF ELECTRONIC CONTENT, AND USE PERMISSION APPARATUS - SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT INC.

Some more fuel for the Durango fire, the devkit info released so far is apparently based on older devkit models.
IIRC, the Edge article did mention that their info was recent and that their source (game developers with more recent devkits) was accurate. It did state that, while the PS4 is more powerful, there isn't much difference between the overall capabilities of both consoles.

Development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles have told us that PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014.
It’s clear Sony has designed a system that, on paper, outperforms Microsoft’s next Xbox. One source familiar with both platforms tells us that in real terms Sony’s console is “slightly more powerful” and “very simple to work with”.

I am surprised what MS is doing at there PR.

Kinect is a fail with no concrete game library, lack of exclusives and now Always online and no second hand game rumors are really bad press.

They have not come forward to deny anything. This is turning out to be more disastrous then WIN 8 launch.

They are failing to realize that CALL OF DUTY and GTA DLCs will not save them for long.

Regardless, you can kiss cheap gaming on Xbox goodbye. With BluRay in place, it'll be incredibly difficult to crack, not to mention the exorbitant prices :looking:

I can see plenty of guys shifting from the xbox gang to pc gaming if it indeed is true. Imagine Chandoo and Necrokiller in a single team waving the PC Flag

God save the PS community

^ Lol that would be a sight indeed :D.

But to be honest, this was eventually going to happen one way or the other. The industry has simply grown too greedy, and they're hell bent on cutting 2nd hand game purchases, they're even willing to go as far as shutting those retailers off who sell these 2nd hand games. This next cycle might very well be the death of console gaming as we know it :p (sarcasm intended).

Well, PS3 led to legit games being sold on shelves here in Pakistan which is quite amazing given the adamant piracy here.
Am sure that won't be a big deal. Piracy is now irrelevant.

Also, Chandoo now has a job :p

Blu ray has nothing to do with piracy.Take the PS3 for example. It's all about hacking the security mechanisms of the console in question.Hell AFAIK you can get blu ray burners for about $100 (correct me if I'm wrong plz) and these prices will drop eventually as well, Blu rays are not the issue.

In any case pircacy is still a crucial factor as far as I'm concerened. No piracy = No gaming for me.Or atleast not on the same level as before.I might have to settle for playing about half a dozen games per year which does not work for me.

Indeed, Blu-ray is no concern for Piracy. Recently, a Blu-ray emulator i.e close to the one on 360 are in-development for PS3. They are called ODE and they work in similar way i.e latest OFW and latest games using Blu-ray. So yeh, Blu-ray doesn't equate to no piracy, it is more about the security mechanism built in system.

As for PC gaming, unless JRPGs or Japanese games start getting released on PC; i don't see myself next to a PC for the upcoming years.

I have no problem in going semi-legit i.e piracy on PC and legit on consoles :p

But, BluRay is still prohibitively expensive as a media, even if they do end up cracking the security mechanism, which given Sony's paranoia is highly unlikely.

Japanese are oblivious to PC gaming. To them, PC gaming doesn't exist, when their next door neighbor (South Korea), pretty much the entire nation is PC gaming addict. That tells you a lot about the demographics of the Japanese people, not that I'm saying I hold it against them. I like their Live action dramas & movies, and have had my fill of brilliant games in the earlier years (PS1 era, the absolute best when it came to innovative and entirely new different IPs).
