Damn, it was hard to find a poster for this series. Got one in Arabic. Weird.
Anyhow, this was an anthology series by the indie filmmaker who popularised mumblecore: Joe Swanberg. Eight episodes, eight vignettes about modern love and relationships in Chicago. I really like stories about modern romance practices and how it is probably the most complicated relationships have been in history. Marriage as a means of finding love is a relatively new concept. In the olden days it was all about politics and making the right connections. But now (and more accurately in the late 20th century onwards), mostly in the west, it is supposed to be about finding the love of your life. That has presented interesting psychological insights into how humans perceive love.
This series is pretty short, mostly fun and a nice look at young and old, straight or otherwise, relationships in this day and age. Each episode has a couple at its center and themes like long term marriage, making choices between security and passion in the relationship, how someone changes for another person, and in one particular episode: threesomes, are explored. It does so in a light, fun and engaging way. The stories stand alone perfectly well, and characters from other stories pop up sometimes in other episodes, but they are mostly independent. The cast is terrific. I guess that the reason so many actors agreed to do this was because it was a short commitment, mostly one episode 30 minutes long. Orlanda Bloom even gives a great goofily funny performance here.
In summary: a nice, light, fun, often poignant look at modern relationships.
P.S. Malin Akerman. Wow. She is a beaut.
