Switching from Windows to Mac OS?

I've been researching on new laptops for quite a while now and now I'll be making a decision soon. From everything I've read, from a hardware perspective, a Macbook Pro fits my needs. It's got exceptional battery, exceptional built quality and exceptional screen quality. The only thing is that it has a Mac which I have NEVER used. I've never used any OS other than Windows.

So my question is, will I miss Windows? Most importantly, will MS Office docs made in Windows open fine on Mac? What about the OS generally and the apps available for it?

P.S I wont install Windows on a Macbook if I get one.

its like 5 years back my cousin bought me a Macbook... It was latest system which costed 120k (at that time)... it was stolen one which some Negro had grabbed from a White in US and then sold to my cousin for 100$ and my cousin presented that as a gift to me...

I used that operating system for one week and it was good but once you are user of Windows u cant adjust to any other. there was always compatibility issues.

Later I decided to sell it as I installed XP in it using virtual machine which was very slow...

In market noone was offering me 20k for it... there as one shop in blue area that offerred me 30k and I sold it with eyes closed. I knew it was going at very low price but in Pakistan it has no Resale....

I dont understand y arent u opting for a Super windows laptop in same price range...

Mac is not for us... Mind it...

Dear ammar,

new laptops specially dell's with Optimus offer great battery timings. No doubt mac has great build quality and brilliant screen but my friend you will miss windows badly later. I was in same dilemma i was puzzled like hell but after all i made a right decision and i pulled my trigger on Dell XPS 17 & you know I thanks to Allah i did right thing, i went for XPS which offers best price/hardware:) You know well mac OS vs windows OS in terms of price & hardware, windows and notebook win in every term.

Regarding MS Office files you have to install Mac MS office which is specially made for OS X by Microsoft. The thing you will miss much is windows platform and its apps. Mac computer offers great apps but they are limited as compare to windows apps. This apps situation is like Android and iOS apps. In terms of cell phones Apple have great and thousands of apps but not in terms of computer.

MS Office Read here

Overall my suggestion is get a windows notebook but if you really want to taste mac then go ahead and buy it. Buy mac as soon as possible other wise you will keep getting confuse.

If you can share us your budget, need and from where you will buy? we can help you for sure!

My budget is around 120,000rs. Dell XPS series is out because its got terrible battery life (3 hours only). I wanted Sony Vaio SA series but it's not available in Pakistan. The only model Sony Center has is for 250,000rs because it's got a frackin 256GB SSD which alone is like a 1000$ worth.

^ That's SB series. SA is slightly better built and has a 1600x900 display with a faster GPU (6630). My purpose is general usage which includes university work (on MS office), an occasional session of TF2, browsing and sometimes watching a movie. My req. are a decent screen, good built quality, not too big and heavy and excellent battery life. I know a cheap HP can do all that but since I have a sizable budget I want something better.
Unfortunately since I don't know anyone coming from abroad I'll have to get it from here.

did you call them and ask about SA series? if not then call them and ask regarding SA series availability. my friend according to your usage i will suggest you take a look on HP Pro Book series. I myself used this machine and i was stunned by its build quality. Its build quality is way better then other laptops like inspiron. It is elegant, strong, sturdy + look as well, an elegant machine. The machine which i used was having 4gigs ram + i5 sandy + 500 hdd + AMD Radeon HD 6490M cost was Rs.70,000 For sure this machine display and sound is also much better then other similar price laptops. If you get a chance try it in local market.

If you skip HP then you have no much choice. You either have to skip one of your mention usage.

Take a look on these as well available in different colors.

Why would I buy a Mac only to use Windows on it? The brilliant trackpad of Macbook will loose all gesture controls on Windows. Battery time on Windows is around 4 hours compared to 8-9 hours on Mac. And Macbook doesnt have a windows button either.

If you are after a good battery life plus performance definitely go for mac it has excellent battery timing and once you get used to Mac OS which isnt all that difficult n start using multitouch controls believe me you will never want to go to windows again as these gestures n shortcuts really help alot.
Oh n dont forget the great finishing and good looks you are gonna get :).

I still use a 2006 macbook (not even dual core a core duo) and just now the battery life degraded and went to 1.30hrs on moderate use. I play n watch 720p videos on it all the time so going after a mac will be a long term investment. But ofcourse they are not built for gaming.

You'll be very limited, I can't read all replies on this thread but surely you'll miss Windows, Windows is pretty friendly as compare to Unix-like OS systems, if you can troubleshoot it and willing to do it in text-only mod go ahead, if you don't want much trouble and you're happy with GUI stick to Windows.

You can also optimize your Windows for better battery timings.
May I ask you what are your least and most usage?

BTW, Apple uses very powerful kernel for their operating systems. Indeed very few people on the earth uses their OS. Steam was stupid enough to introduce Steam for Mac.

Did y'all see the new Assassin's Creed trailer? They finally made a AC set in Japan & then they put a negro as the male protagonist. Ubisoft is taking cues from Disney, and it isn't gonna end well for them, just like Disney. Go woke, go broke!
