[h=1]Supergirl’s Season 3 Villain: Who is Reign?[/h]

[h=1][/h]

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for the Supergirl season 2 finale–
While worldbuilding and stage-setting are all the rage for the superhero genre – especially on episodic TV – Supergirl opted to focus its second season finale on wrapping up the seasonal storylines and keeping the setups for new status-quos in the realm of character relationships (specifically, Kara is now the lone single person among a cast of characters that have almost all paired-up at this point), rather than comic-book references or mythology details. If anything, it’s main “big” change (Mon-El is gone for parts unknown, with Earth’s atmosphere rendered toxic to Daxamites for the foreseeable future) served to take things back closer to their season 1 starting point.
At least right up to the ending, where the somber final shot of Supergirl flying off to work out her newfound loneliness through crime-fighting (and the reveal that the returning Cat Grant has sussed-out her secret identity) cut abruptly to a flashback of the destruction of Krypton and the reveal that at least one more baby… “something” had been loaded into an escape pod and shot off to Earth before the planet went up in smoke. We didn’t get to see it, but whoever was doing the loading left us with one word: “Reign.”
While Supergirl is a show that often thrives on misdirection (the much-hyped word of General Zod turning up in the finale turned out to be references to a hallucination), “Reign” would seem very much to suggest that this incoming new nemesis will indeed be drawn once again from the character’s comic book incarnation. But while the majority of the enemies faced by Kara Zor-El over her first two seasons have been modernized versions of classic Superman/Supergirl foes, the character most associated with the name Reign is a fairly recent creation of DC’s now-concluding “New 52” era.
[h=2]WORLDKILLERS[/h]

As incarnated in the pages of Supergirl’s 6th DC Comics Universe incarnation – which featured an aloof, distant Kara who was fixated on her Kryptonian heritage and largely distrustful/dismissive of humanity – Reign is a female superhuman created by Krypton scientists but actually “built” from the fetal stage up from genetic experiments on a creature from an unknown alien world. She had comparable powers to Supergirl herself (flight, superhuman strength, super-speed, invulnerability and additionally was a master of weapons-based combat) and was later revealed to be the nominal leader of an entire four person team of similarly-created bio-weapons called “Worldkillers,” which also included members named Perillus, Deimax and Flower of Heaven.
The gradual reveal of the Worldkillers’ powers and origin were spread over a three issue Supergirl storyline that made them the first significant new nemeses the Girl of Steel faced in her New 52 continuity, which at the time was meant to exist in the absence of any prior storylines and center this particular Kara as one of the most recently-emerged figures in the new “streamlined” DC Universe. However, allusions to characters and events that had come before were still common; and more than a few fans took notice that the Worldkillers’ origin as monsters made by cruel Kryptonian experimentation made them very similar to the villain of the infamous Death of Superman storyline – Doomsday.
This connection was teased out further when Supergirl, having worked out the “trick” that the Worldkiller’s were vulnerable to one another’s attacks, pushed them to the brink of defeat. In retreat, Reign revealed that a fifth yet-unseen Worldkiller existed somewhere in the universe – leaving fans to speculate that this could become the origin of the eventual New 52 version of Doomsday himself… while others speculated that Reign may actually have been referring to Kara.
[h=2]IS THIS DOOMSDAY?[/h]

Ever since the character was created, Superman adaptations have tended to be in a hurry to get a version of Doomsday into the mix. Given that the DCEU TV world’s version of Supergirl has leaned harder than most on establishing Kara as a direct parallel of her more famous cousin (with much of Superman’s presence in the Season 2 finale serving to reinforce the idea that she is, in fact, the more powerful of the two), it’s not hard to imagine the showrunners deciding that the next logical step in terms of enemies is to have Kara encounter a Doomsday analog of her own. If so, Reign – a female character with an extremely similar origin story – would seem to fit the bill for such a role almost too perfectly.
If this is the case, the question Supergirl fans will have to ask themselves while they wait for Season 3 to start delivering answers is what purpose a Doomsday-like character will play. In this particular series, villains’ goals and motives tend to be secondary to what effect they’ll have on Kara and her compatriots on an emotional/character level – and with Kara now having lost her main love interest and seemingly set to be re-focused on the superheroic side of her identity, a Doomsday-style encounter sets her up for intriguing and potentially character turns.
Doomsday, of course, was the character who killed (or, rather, appeared to have killed) Superman. No one really expects Supergirl to “kill off” its title character (at least not without a similar “just kidding” denouement); but the broader fallout of that storyline, which involved various “pretender” Supermen vying for the position of one true hero and an overall question of whether the “returned” original had changed for the worse. Is Reign set to be an excuse for Supergirl to work through some of the Reign (there’s that word again…) of The Supermen story-beats? It seems possible – but we’ll have to wait for season 3 to find out.

[h=1]Supergirl: Odette Annable to Play Reign in Season 3[/h]

[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Supergirl ahead.]–
The third season of Supergirl has found its big bad, with Odette Annable tapped to play Reign. The series may have left CBS after just one season, but quickly found a home on The CW for its second season. Supergirl will stay there for the foreseeable future and be part of the Arrowverse that has become increasingly populated in recent years. However, thanks to Kara Danvers being the hero on a different Earth, it has largely been allowed to stand on its own and delve into Kara’s growth as a hero.
With season three already confirmed, the Supergirl season two finale left many aspects up in the air; whether that be the future of Mon-El or Maggie’s answer to Alex’s proposal it will be season three that helps answer those. However, the biggest tease in the season 2 finale was a flashback that showed another pod taking off from Krypton before it was destroyed – and now we know who is inside.

The Wrap is reporting that Odette Annable will be playing the character of Reign in season 3 and serve as the big bad throughout. Reign is one of several individuals known as Worldkillers and her younger self is all-but-confirmed to be who is inside that pod. Annable has had quite a few notable roles on past television programs like The Astronauts Club and Banshee, but also was seen in Cloverfield. As a series regular and the big bad for Supergirl‘s third season, expect to see a lot of her from the get go.

In the comics, Reign is leader of the Worldkillers – a group created by Kryptonians (and Kara’s father) – to discover and experiment on different alien races. However, once these Worldkillers were freed, they sought out to learn of their own origin, but Krypton’s destruction lead them down a path of destruction – making their name very fitting. While Reign is the leader, she is but one of five Worldkillers. One of them has never surfaced before, but Reign has previously called upon fellow members Flower of Heaven, Perrilus, and Deimax to try and defeat Supergirl.
There is no word at this point if the other Worldkillers will also be making an appearance in season 3, but it is nothing if not possible. With confirmation now here that Reign will be the big bad for season 3, the upcoming season begins to take a bit more shape. Supergirl has already fought her fair share of powerful enemies (and just recently defeated Superman as well), but having a baddie like Worldkillers will pose a brand new set of problems for the hero of National City.

[h=1]Supergirl Season 3 Casts Amy Jackson As Saturn Girl[/h]

Bollywood actress Amy Jackson has been cast in the recurring role of Saturn Girl on The CW TV series Supergirl. Since Supergirl premiered, fans have been introduced to a number of prominent DC characters, with many of them hailing from the cosmic side of the DC Universe, and now it looks as though season 3 will bring yet another familiar character to the small screen.
During season 1, it was revealed that series regular Hank Henshaw is actually Martian Manhunter, an iconic DC character and key member of the Justice League. Smallville‘s Supergirl actress, Laura Vandervoot portrayed Indigo, a different version of classic Superman antagonist, Brainiac. Over the course of the series, Maxima, Red Tornado, Miss Martian, General Zod, and Parasite have also been introduced.
[h=3]The CW has announced that British-born Bollywood actress Amy Jackson will play Saturn Girl in season 3 of Supergirl. After beginning her career as a model, Jackson has starred in a number of Bollywood films and is now one of India’s most prominent leading ladies. The actress will next be seen in 2.0, a sequel to the Indian box office hit, Robot. A description for Jackson’s character has also been released:[/h]

Saturn Girl, aka Imra Ardeen, is a kind, smart, and strong-willed hero who uses her telekinetic ability to help those in need. She was born on Titan, one of Saturn’s moons, and arrives on Earth to help Supergirl battle one of her biggest threats.”

Introduced in Adventure Comics #247 in 1958, Saturn Girl is a founding member of the Legion of Super Heroes, a team based in the 30th century and one of DC’s most famous superhero groups. The news suggests that Supergirl will soon introduce new threats via time travel, though it could be that this version of Saturn Girl is from the present.
The introduction of the Legion of Super Heroes into the Arrowverse is something that has been teased for a while. In one episode of Supergirl, a Legion Flight Ring can be spotted in the Fortress of Solitude. A Legion Flight Ring was also seen in an Easter egg-filled scene on The Flash. Worn by members of the Legion, the rings grant the wearer the ability of flight and protects them from traveling through space. It can also be used to make distress calls. Supergirl star Melissa Benoist has also remarked that the Legion “is on its way.”
Amy Jackson’s role in Supergirl won’t be Saturn Girl’s first live-action appearance. Played by Canadian singer Alexz Johnson, Saturn Girl appeared in a season 8 episode of Smallville alongside fellow Legion members Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad. Saturn Girl and the others helped Clark defeat Brainiac.

[h=1]Supergirl Season 3 Will See Reign Evolve Into the Big Bad[/h]

The upcoming season of Supergirl will see the character progression of show’s new main Big Bad, Reign. Played by series newbie, Odette Annable, the arrival of the villain already teased at the end of season 2, although, admittedly, because of the very eventful finale that involved Kara being heartbroken and Cat’s return into the fold, many fans might not have thought it to be as pivotal as it was.
To the uninitiated, Reign, who is mined from the pages of the comic books (as most characters in these shows are) is a Worldkiller who is technically a biological weapon created on Krypton. However, they were eventually outlawed by the Kryptonian Science Council following the realization of just how much danger they pose to the planet. Despite basically knowing where she came from, her complete origin story is unknown even to her. With her home planet already non-existent, she descends to Earth in an effort to find some answers regarding her mysterious creation.
[h=3]While fans of the comic books know Reign’s official story, it is uncertain just how much of it will be used in Supergirl. Based on a recent interview with EW, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg is also starting to figure out how they will present a version of the character in a way that presents her as a complex antagonist that will also be easy for fans to be engaged with:[/h]

I’m not only competing with myself on Supergirl, but I’m competing with myself on all the other shows that I’ve done, and by that, I mean I don’t want to repeat what I’ve done on Supergirl, nor do I want to repeat what I’ve done on Arrowand Flash, so when we were figuring out Reign, one thing we’ve never really seen on any of these shows is we’ve never seen the big bad become the big bad. Usually on these shows, you either meet the big bad at the end of episode 1 or you meet them at episode 7 or 9, and you realize that they’ve been pulling the strings the whole time and were out there working with their multi-year plan to take down the heroes or destroy the city. When we meet Reign, she’s just a woman. Her name is Samantha Arias and she’s a single mom, and she has no idea that she is Reign. She has no idea that she was the baby in the pod at the end of last season, so the journey that she takes this season is watching her realize her heritage and see how it manifests.”

We have already spent two full seasons seeing Kara’s respective personal and superhero journey and it only makes sense that we at least have a similar arc for her villains, just to make sure that they don’t feel unworthy of going up against the Girl of Steel. Starting with Reign is a great move given that her comic book story already opens up a lot of opportunities to showcase the character’s growth, and not just an antagonist.
While Reign takes her time finding more about her true self, Kara will be busy with other things such as Supergirl‘s first villain of the season, Bloodsport aka Robert DuBois, as well as still nursing a broken heart with the loss of Mon-El (Chris Wood). Meanwhile, fans can also look forward to more of the relationship between Kara’s sister Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima).

[h=1]Supergirl Casts Defiance Actor As Brainiac 5[/h]

The CW’s Supergirl has cast actor Jesse Rath in the role of Brainiac 5, a character who originated in the world of DC Comics back in 1961. Rath himself is no stranger to the world of sci-fi and fantasy television, having previously played roles on such genre TV series as Being Human and Defiance, as well as the Assassin’s Creed: Lineage miniseries. The actor also played a recurring role on The CW’s romantic dramedy series No Tomorrow, which aired for a single season this past year.
In his earliest comic book iteration, Brainiac 5 claimed to be the descendant of the original and far more infamous Brainiac, though the characters’ connections (or lack thereof) have varied in subsequent versions. Blake Ritson is playing Brainiac on the upcoming SyFy TV series Krypton (a show that revolves around Superman’s grandfather), but there has been no indication so far that Supergirl’s showrunners have plans to introduce their own version of Brainiac to the small screen anytime soon. As for Brainiac 5: he’s no stranger to the world of live-action TV either, having previously been brought to life by James Marsters on Smallville.
[h=3]According to TV Line, Rath will make his debut as Brainiac 5 on the upcoming Supergirl season 3 episode ‘Legion of Super-Heroes’ (the tenth episode for this season). ‘Legion of Super-Heroes’ will introduce the half-computer, half-organic being as a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, who hale from the 31st Century and travel back in time to modern-day National City, in order to help Kara in her battle against Reign (Odette Annable) – the Worldkiller that newly minted L-Corp CEO and single mom Samantha Arias has already begun to transform into.[/h]

In addition to all that, Supergirl co-showrunner Andrew Kreisberg previously indicated to TV Line that Brainiac 5 would form a romantic interest in Supergirl herself, saying:
“Someone down the road will like Kara a lot, which will be a lot of fun.”

Kara’s love life has been kept on the back-burner in Supergirl season 3 thus far, what with the character still reeling from the the loss of Mon-El (Chris Wood) and struggling with her own sense of dual identity; not to mention, her sense of spirituality and purpose during the episode ‘The Faithful’. Between Reign’s impending emergence and the possibility that Kara inadvertently awakened another Worldkiller during the climax of ‘The Faithful’, romance probably isn’t going to be on Supergirl’s mind anytime soon, either. Of course, that may not prevent other people from falling hard for Kara in the foreseeable future, Rath’s Brainiac 5 included.
