I was going through the internet, idling away my free hours. I came upon an article which was discussing that the sequel fever, which has been high ever since the early noughties, is sky high right now. If not sequels, then reboots, prequels, spin offs and the like.
2007 was called the year of threequels.
2011 has the most sequels, reboots and the like in the history of film.
My questions is that are sequels really that much of a requirement? Are they really good? Do they further propel the legacy of a beloved movie or tarnish it.
I can think of these sequels that live up to the greatness of the original, and surpass it even:
The Godfather Part II (equally good, if not better)
Star Wars V : Empire Strikes Back
Spider-Man 2
The Lord of the Rings : Return of the King (although I don't think that the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is actually a trilogy. It is one movie, edited in three parts)
The Dark Knight
and many other.
The list of shitty sequels is non-exhausting.
So, what do you people think? Are sequels a good idea or not?
