Playstation Rumor: Sony chooses IBM POWER 7 CPU for PlayStation 4

After earlier reports about the new GPU for PlayStation 4 Sony is now told that the IBM Power CPU 7 has selected the next generation console the PlayStation 4.

Further reports in English, it is a rumor and not confirmed by Sony.

“We can officially reveal in this world exclusive that SCEI has officially chosen IBM's currently in development POWER7 architecture for it's PlayStation 4 system, currently scheduled for a 2012 worldwide release.​

IBM shall debut POWER7 for the server market in the summer of 2010.​

The PlayStation 4 shall use a cost effective version of the architecture custom designed for Sony's specific needs.​

The only information FGNOnline currently has available regarding specifications and performance is that the PS4 implementation of the chip shall use 6-8 cores, 24-32MB shared L3 Cache, Quad threading per core, and a double precision performance approaching 200GFLOPS.​

The CELL chip which powers the PS3 is capable of 15 double precision GFLOPS.​

Considering SONY's rep in keeping secrets , most rumors have been proved . Let's see how this one stacks up . But I would never want a 2012 release for PS4 .

That's not fair... I got my PS3 a few months ago and now the PS4 is coming out in 2012!? 2015 or 2016 should be the selected dates of release for the PlayStation 4... I really hate the rush! <_<

Whereas you guys are so much after a much late release ... simply take into account the fact that PS1 came out in 1994, PS2 in 2000 and PS3 in 2006 ... a time difference of 6-7 years, i.e. 2012-2013 is what historically we can expect.

Also from the viewpoint of hardware (specially the GPUs), both the Xbox360 and PS3 are slowly and steadily getting outdated and limited for the scale of games that are coming out today. Dragon Age Origins is a perfect example ... The PC variant of the GPUs used in these consoles cannot even render todays 720p games effectively, so its obvious that these GPUs are being pushed to the max and it is because of the optimization due to a single configuration of hardware in each console that you get what you get today.

To be very honest, a new console in 2012-2013 is what you will need if you want games to improve in graphics, physics and dynamic world etc. as fast as tehy have in this (and previous) generations.

Oh and to those talking about the "10 year" thing ... thats the years of manufacture rather than years as the flagship console. Both PS1 and PS2 were sold even after they had been superceded

Of course there is no PS4 next to our doors in 2012. Its too early and a uncompleted task.I think just a small theory works leaked as well. But i hope PS4 contains a lot more power than this it doesn't mean these 7 are less for ps3.
What's next for Microsoft. Natal or something else?
I hope Microsoft will keep their mouth shut until a good prove. Because last time in hassle Microsoft developed 3 rings of death instead of x360. Biggest failure ever. Hardware wise.
