On earth...Lahore

The resolution of televisions and monitors is constantly rising. Currently NHK and a consortium of electronics companies are developing Ultra High Definition, a format with four to eight times the resolution of current HD television.

And the next PlayStation is rumored to be part of Sony's larger push.

If true this would hardly be surprising. Sony has often used the PlayStation to push other technologies at the same time. The success of the PlayStation 2 helped promote DVD as the next change in media. And the PlayStation 3 was built around the Blu-Ray drive as part of an attempt to win a format war… an effort that largely succeeded.

As for 4K, Sony is introducing an 80-inch set that supports the format and supposedly will be using the PS4 to promote it as part of a set.

Our Take: It seems likely that this is true: Sony would obviously like to sell more television sets.

It also seems likely that 4K will simply be an option available, especially since honestly it's unlikely the format will go very far for decades. It will make for some gorgeous booth displays and even better eSports.

But beyond that we're not really sure if this is for gamers. Sony certainly sees the PlayStation as a "living-room box" with far more than just games available for it. Still, we find it unlikely in an era of Netflix streaming and tight budgets that 4K games in of themselves will get any traction: Sony's flagship 4K set will cost a cool $30,000.

That said, we can't wait to see those tech demos.

Do you want 4K games? Or do you think Sony is asking a little much from your wallet?

I dont think it will be smart move for sony to go 4k with new console. They should focus more on full hd at 60fps first which both console manufacture fail to do in current gen. Even if they do it will be a gimic some upscaling. Coz the hardware they will put in will not be able to push that.

the word here is SUPPORT....360 and PS3 support 1080p.this does not mean their games play on them too.i think this is actually very true and possible.PS4 and next-box can have 4k support while their games run on 1080p, makes sense.

Hmm. Thing with LCDs is that anything less than native resolution would look kinda ugly after scaling, no matter how good the panel. I wonder if the 4 times jump is gonna get mainstream as quickly as 1080p did.

Nailed it.

This would unnecessarily increase the cost of the console, which is primarily meant for gaming, not movies & photo viewing. Current blu-ray players with faster read speeds would be better.

Including the option to output at 4K bears no additional cost on the hardware. HDMI 1.4 chips with higher bandwidth are already available on Nvidia's GTX6xx and ATI's 7970 lineup of GPUs (and all future mid/high-end GPUs from here onwards). All they require is a firmware update that will allow them to support 4K.

Current blu-ray players with faster read speeds would be better.
I doubt the PS4's blu-ray drive will have slower read speeds than the current slew of blu-ray players.

Right. I said that based on the price increment between BDP-S790 ($250) and BDP-S590 ($150). Must be something else I overlooked in the specs then other than 4K support in S790.

As far as those blu-ray players are concerned, you're right. The price difference is most definitely because of the additional 4K support (and probably a few other bells and whistles). However, this is pretty much a case of Sony cashing in on a high-end feature. They do cost more to manufacture, but the difference isn't huge. Plus, production of low-bandwidth chips is gradually being phased out. It's already becoming the norm on PC GPUs, as I already mentioned, so it'd be pretty short-sighted of Sony and MS to not include them in their next consoles.

Current-gen consoles can output at 720p/60Hz in 3D via HDMI. It's only natural for next-gen consoles to be able to do the same at 1080p/60Hz. For this, high-bandwidth HDMI chips are going to be included one way or another. Hence, when I said "no additional cost on the hardware", I meant no additional cost over what is required to get the PS4 to do 1080p/60Hz in 3D. The bandwidth required to do 4K in 2D is roughly around twice as much as what is required to do 1080p/60Hz in 3D.

what confuses me is that if these high end HDMI chips really not that expensive to manufacture then why hasn't anyone used them to allow 3D 1080p/60Hz on a TV yet?we are living in a world where 4k TVs are available to the consumer market while 1080p/60Hz 3D isn't.its almost like nobody is interested in bring that.considering these facts i think the next-gen console will not have 3d 1080p/60hz support since there is no hardware to use to utilize it yet.

Seems pretty logical. 4k resolution TVs are just around the corner, so it makes sense that next-gen consoles will make the jump.

Wasn't it the same case this gen?

Same thing as today's Native 720p Games upscaled to 1080p

The thing is going from 720p to 1080p is Twice the Pixel Count but going from 1080p to 4k is 4 times the Pixels and i seriously doubt any decent game could be rendered natively at 4k Resolution

The Native Rendering resolution jumping to almost 8 times the Pixel Count (720p to 4k) is not an easy task specially interms of processing power required

the thing is that these days developers will go to any length to sell their games, to stand out, to have an USP.
And also on the other hand few devs who like to act like perfectionists and offer gamers every possible advantage might too work on this..
I wont be surprized if devs out there do implement the 4K option..

Started Dead Island 2, and i find it pretty lame. The story is shit. The characters are either cringe or bland (all 6 of them), The gameplay isn't fun. Even the goddamn zombies don't behave like proper zombies. They're all fast & intelligent unlike how zombies are supposed to be like. Any fan of "zombie" genre cannot possibly like this shitfest of a game. Dying Light 2 was million times better than this shit.

tbh gaming industry as a whole is failing much like tech industry. They have buckled down too much to Corporate suites then relying on passionate and innovative people. A corporate only believes in financial growth and shareholders.
