I generally dont buy into rumors, but lately SO many people have been telling me PTCL is all ready to bump their packages once again, and that their top package will be 4mbps. Well, if it is indeed planned, I hope it happens soon!

People with fiber optic lines wont have any trouble getting a 4mbps line imo, but for those of us who are still on the old copper wiring (like me), the line quality (SNR/attenuation) will probably be the determinant.

Anyone else hear anything about this?

Yar! I read internal PTCL confidential mails daily caz I am employed by PTCL :). But I haven't heard this "RUMOR".
But I will ask proper DSL guys! OK! (2t)
PTCL certainly got the Bandwidth to carry out this upgrade. But I think they still need 4-500 Rs 256 or 512K package to cater to the masses ...now! If only I was BB n IPTV chief! :angel3:

instead of trying to fix their existing problems, and try to satisfy angry customers, they go for an upgrade which will virtually be worth nothing at the end of the day ..

Instead of launching a 4Mb package they should give a 256K connection for 500-600 RS. People would appreciate that more than this. Cause 500 RS would be a lot in their budget.

^I think they will employ what they did before . Previous users will get double the speed .

Question : How are we supposed to get Fibre Optic Cable Connections ?

I have a fibre optic connection. just go to their office and ask them for the form. Last time i heard they were giving it away for free, i got it when it was launched back then it had problems but now its working fine, and the net(dial up) is much fatser on it as well. My friend's connection connects @ 35-42 kbps but mine always 52.

Fiber optic is slowly but surely becoming available in Islamabad (not sure about other cities). Right now, several sectors in Islamabad have fiber optic cables, just call up your exchange and get a number. People in sectors that don't have fiber optics yet will have to wait a year or so, but this does not mean they cant support a 4mbps connection. The ultimate determinant of whether or not you can support a 4mbps connection are the SNR and attenuation values, which you can find in your router. A good, clean set up with copper wiring and a less than ludicrous distance from your exchange should pretty much ensure your line will be able to handle 4mbps.

I googled a bit out of curiosity, and discovered that my line, despite being copper, can actually support a 12mbps connection. So don't worry too much.

Actually, if someone here has a fiber optic line, please go into your routers setup and post your SNR and attenuation values here. It'll quench my curiosity once and for all!

I also doube a Rs500 package will be introduced, above all PTCL wants to make money, and while a Rs500 package might increase the number of subscribers by a bit, it'll cut deep into profits. Think about it: people who get broadband are generally people who use computers a lot, play games etc, and these people can generally afford to pay Rs.1000/month.

Pretty sure if this does happen, it'll happen like last time, ie charges will remain static while the speed for each package will double.

I found a page that will let you estimate the max speed your line can support:

http://212.23.23.177/ADSL/default.aspx

It requires you to enter 3 values: downstream SNR, downstream attenuation, and sync rate (also known as line rate). You can find these values in your routers setup. This page wont estimate speeds greater than 8mbps, but thats irrelevant since most of you will be checking it out for 4mbps anyway.

4mb? It'll only work on ONU lines i think.. The standard copper wires which most of the people have only support upto 2mb i think... Im not sure though.

did you try setting up Google Payments? For UBL you may have to get it enabled for internet transactions, Naya should work without it!
