Sony announced that it has sold through over 5.3 million units of its new PlayStation 4 console. The figure is taken from worldwide sales and is accurate as of February 8, 2014. That's nearly three months after its launch in November and a couple weeks before it launches in Japan later this week on February 22.


"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season," Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said in a press release.


"We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4."


Previously, Sony put forth a sales target that it would sell five million units before the end of its fiscal year ending March 31, 2014. With that number beat almost two full months ahead of schedule and before Japan's launch, it looks like Sony may see even more impressive numbers than expected.

With 5.3 million sold through to customers since its launch in November, it’s a given by now that the PS4 is selling very fast, faster than its predecessors by Sony Computer Entertainment, but just how much faster? Thanks to NeoGaf user Aquamarine, we can catch a glimpse on that thanks to the sales data over time of all four home consoles by Sony:
PlayStation:
4 months (one territory) – March 31st, 1995 – 0.85 million
10 months – September 30th, 1995 – 1.77 million
16 months – March 31st, 1996 – 4.26 million
22 months – September 30th, 1996 – 8.07 million
28 months – March 31st, 1997 – 13.50 million
PS2:
1 month (one territory) – March 31st, 2000 – 1.41 million
7 months (one territory) – September 30th, 2000 – 3.52 million
13 months – March 31st, 2001 – 10.61 million
19 months – September 30th, 2001 – 19.58 million

PS3:

From the data showcased above we can gather that PS1 took ten months to sell 1.77 million units, PS2 took seven to sell 3.52 million. PS3 needed four months to move 3.5 million units.
PS4 is, for now, outpacing them all, having sold 5.3 million in just three months. Of course initial sales aren’t everything in this market, but for the moment there’s no reason on the horizon to predict a future slow down. It’ll be interesting to see where we’ll be at the end of the year, but so far so good.

While you may not explicitly know about it, catching a glimpse of its logo before the beginning of each video game, Bink Video is a very well-known video format. It’s been used for nearly decades now to present cutscenes and full motion video in games ranging from the original Xbox to the PlayStation 3. Bink Video has gotten even better with the reveal of Bink 2 but developer RAD Game Tools pointed out something interesting about the same.
First, it proclaims the speed of Bink 2 thanks to “multi-core scaling and SIMD design (up to 70% of the instructions executed on a frame are SIMD). It is really fast – it can play 4K video frames (3840×2160) in 4 ms on PCs and 11 ms on Sony PS4 or Xbox One using the CPU only (or 1.4 ms and 2.3 ms using GPU acceleration)!”
The last part is especially interesting, because it indicates the PlayStation 4 is faster than the Xbox One’s GPU for this particular instance. Sure it’s only slightly faster but it still counts. The similarity in both systems’ CPU speeds is understandable since they both rely on AMD CPUs with 8 cores. But this is perhaps the first solid instance of the PS4′s GPU being superior.

I dont know the final lineup, but leading up to E3 and perhaps at E3, there is a good chance you’ll be happy.

While the answer was teasing and somewhat cryptic, it was also quite promising. After that, he moved on to give further info on just how many studios are working on the console:

That’s a tough one to answer by me. There are MANY teams from the development side alone. Most (all?) studios will have at least another team doing something right now away from the main team. Larger studios will have more than that. One studio for example has 5+ teams on PS4 : )

He then specified that he’s talking only about the western arms of the company:

I wasn’t talking about Japan (not to say they also don’t have a few teams internally on the development side). As I said… many are on PS4 right now so putting a number on it is difficult at best : )

[h=1]HBO GO for PlayStation 3 Will Be Released Later Today[/h]

Announced back in January, HBO GO is finally coming to PlayStation 3 with an app for PlayStation 4 to follow. PS3 owners will be able to download the app starting today when the PlayStation Store is refreshed.
"Watch every episode of every season of the HBO’s best shows, including True Detective, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones," SCEA's Phil Rosenberg wrote on the PlayStation Blog.


"We are also working diligently with HBO to bring the HBO GO app to PS4. Keep checking PlayStation.Blog for updates."

To utilize HBO GO, users will need to have a subscription to HBO from their video provider. More information about the service can be found on its official website.

[h=1]Dual Shock 4 Lightbar Can be Dimmed in Upcoming PS4 Firmware [Update][/h]

Sony performs a reversal regarding the controller's lightbar.



GT's own Geoff Keighley just revealed, speaking with Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida, that the Dual Shock 4 lightbar can be turned off in an upcoming PS4 system update.



This is a reversal by Sony as Yoshida previously said "no" when asked if a future update will ever allow players to turn off the Dual Shock 4 lightbar.

Just interviewed @yosp and he said that upcoming PS4 firmware will let you turn off light bar on controller!

This should be good news for most PS4 owners as it was one of the most requested features for the PlayStation 4.


Yesterday, Sony revealed that the next firmware update will include a number of improvements with the system's Share functionality.

Update: It appears there was some confusion as Yoshida clarifies that the controller's lightbar can be dimmed, not completely turned off. Not exactly a reversal then, but an option that should help somewhat.
