I am at the later end of the game and thus far have had a very good time with the game. The story has just taken an unbelievable turn !!! Just as the game starts to feel a bit of a drag a certain story mission just brings you back into it... Side missions which are more or less bounty hunting are an easy pass but the main story missions are really good.

Days Gone is much more similar to Red Dead 2 than a lot of people realize ( but with some performance drops RDR2 doesn't have) . Pacing is much slower than other Sony first party open-ish games. God of War, Horizon ZD etc.

cross copying my post from Era.

Story Progress
Spoiler: show
Just met Tucker at her camp for the first time, but decided to bring the drugs back to Copeland. Now there's a story mission at Tucker's and that's where I'm at.

Game:
Almost everywhere I looked, I read that I should first put all resources and trust towards Copeland to get their trust up. Now, I'm at trust level 2 with them and have pretty much purchased all bike upgrades (some upgrades have a third tier, like different type of tires, but those don't seem to modify the stats at all .. so it looks like for all intents and purposes, my bike is as much tooled up as it will get at this point (including nitrous).

My question is, is level 2 as far high as I should focus on Copeland for relevant Bike upgrade concerns. Or will other tiers of bike upgrades (for example a better engine or fuel tank .. not just something cosmetic) will open up at Copeland's later so I can continue sending resources their way ? or am I good to start focusing on Tucker to get more money off of them ??

Gameplay wise, I think I've already secured around 6 Nero beacons (anything I see on the map, I go explore immediately and put story stuff on the back burner). I have put 5 towards health and 1 towards Stamina. Honestly, the way I'm playing, I'm not using Focus at all so seems pointless for me to even consider that.

I have taken out 2 hordes so far. 1 in Copeland's territory and 1 in Tucker's. The second one was much more difficult but nothing I couldn't manage with my shitty early game equipment, molotov's and a spare pipe bomb or two. The capacity of items I can carry has been pretty shitty so far and I run out of things real quick.

Can someone please tell me if ambush camp rewards are random ? If now, can someone please tell me where I can find the upgrade which gives me incendiary bolts ? cause I'm getting tired of wasting all my molotov's on nests.

Performance:
Playing this on a PS4 Pro and the game looks really clean. Facial animation (especially on minor NPC's like people who you rescue) is pretty bad and whenever I'm entering Copeland or Tucker's camps, there's some real bad slowdown for a few seconds while everything loads up. Other then that the game has been really good so far. No glitches, no hitches during game play or combat. Looks like waiting for a relatively patched up version of the game before starting was a good idea.

Once you have the Bike upgrades you want from Copeland its best to start focusing on Tucker's Camp. But dont worry as you progress through the game other camps will provide even better gear - both for your bike and guns.

I am the complete opposite of this. I use alot of focus since I prefer the stealth approach. But i would recommend putting in alot of these Nero injectors in Stamina if you dont use focus. This is essential for taking out the bigger hordes.

Not sure if these are random or not. But I got my incendiary bolts pretty late in the game from a Southern Bandit camp that you encounter in the latter half of the game.

Facial animations are pretty bad yes but for some strange reason I didnt encounter any issue performance wise until i rode south. Once you ride south the game gets really choppy in some areas. I am not sure what might be the reason of this. but the drops in frame rate are very very apparent once you head south.

I did some reading and apparently the ambush camp rewards are given based on the number of camps you've finished, it's not random. The one I'm looking for (Incendiary bolts) are given after finishing 8 camps. They're supposed to be really good for taking out nests.

Right now I'm starting to wrap up the first 2 zones, just met a character for a new zone and looks like I'll be heading there shortly. Took out 3 hordes so far but definitely need a few more skill points to get the item capacity upgrades. Deacon's bike is pretty much the equivalent of RDR2's horse.

Yeah, someone on resetere put it best. This game feels like something that was developed by the B team at Naughty Dog without their top creative heads (Druckmann etc).

Bend are *really* trying to make an open world TLoU, but it lacks the ND polish and writing.

Edit: I am apparently around half way in the game's story which feels ridiculous because I have put in a lot of time in the game and covered a big chunk of the world map, but there is a lot of worldmap still covered in fog .. meaning there are still full zones I have yet to access. So, unless they are pulling off an AC Odyssey where some parts of the map don't even have any story and are just for side stuff .. it feels like Bend put in a lot of content over the year's worth of delay.

The game can also use another coat of performance polish. Every now and then when entering a settlement the performance tanks for a few seconds before stabilizing itself. DF covered this in their video as well but sadly it hasn't been fixed as of patch 1.07.

This game also has the "MOST" amount of ambient dialogue from the character. They really used that actor to his fullest (unlike Kojima and Sutherland). Deacon is just mouthing off to himself almost everywhere .. the dialogue and writing isn't the best there either.

This plays like a cross between Far Cry 5 and RDR2. The sneaking, marking and stealth taking out people feels like how you would tackle outposts in Far Cry, while everything in between (Traversal, running into people on the road) feels like Bend saw Red Dead 2's design docs and made their own iteration.

I mean, Naughty Dog's output under an unproven director (Lost Legacy) turned out really good too :p
Yeah, but that's because ND as a studio is much better, and has a lot more favorable, releases than Bend :p (also to be fair, Lost Legacy is working entirely off of the Uncharted 4 mold)

That point is meant in that the game is really trying to be an ND game in terms of tone and character portrayals but falls short.

Ended it last night and honestly had a great time with the game. As Chandoo pointed out the game certainly lacks the polish of other first party Sony titles but it still held its ground for the 30-ish hours i have had with the game. The best part of the game is taking out hordes. Even if someone is not really interested in the game, the thrill of taking on a horde is just fantastic. I am done with all the main and side missions and the only thing left i guess are the hordes and a couple of Nero checkpoints. Thankfully the game marks the horde locations on the map once you are done with it so I going to try out taking on as much hordes as i can. Also i would recommend playing the game on HARD mode. I didnt try out the normal mode but the hard mode itself felt more like normal mode in the sense that it wasnt as challenging as i expected it to be.

I would recommend everyone to at least try the game out for yourself without forming any opinion based on the reviews especially if you are a fan of open world action games.

Once you guys get far enough to reach the Crystal Lake area, start gaining trust quick for one of the camps there. You can buy a gun called "Chicago Chopper" which has the biggest clip size in the game and is powerful enough to kill 1 freaker with 1 bullet. I just took out a big 100+ freaker horde using just this gun and a few pipe bombs. It's *really* good.

Yeah this gun is a freakin beast. This was the first gun i unlocked as soon as i got trust level 2 and never switched it afterwards.

How far are you into the game ? I've played enough that I have finished the general Nero checkpoint, infestation and ambush camp quests. And taken out I think 8, 10 hordes in total. The chopper has made that task a lot easier to manage. Find a higher vantage point where hordes have difficulty reaching, start taking potshots. boom.

Apparently some of the game's sluggish-ness is tied to how the game's save system works. It makes a new save file every time the game is auto saving instead of overwriting the last few. So go to your PS4 system settings and the oldest save files and keep the newest or manual one's. Basically your game is making a brand new 40MB file each time the game auto saves (Which means you could have hundreds of them by now).

It's a pretty big oversight by Bend lol.
