Read "Live by Night" by Dennis Lehane. A crime noir, focusing on the rise and fall of a gangster in the prohibition era America. I have a few words for this book. Amazing. This is the stuff of legends. It's like the combination of The Godfather, Scarface, Goodfellas, Boardwalk Empire, Casino, Busgy and every god damn gangster movie out there. Fast paced, beautifully written, amazing characters, some of the best dialogues i have ever read...this is a must read. And if you know the works of Dennis Lehane then you know this guy has got some real talent.

I don't know any books explicitly about vocabulary, but you should try reading reading everything and anything you can get your hands on. Also there's a great website http://vocabulary.com/. It has helped me master a lot of words.
