Asalam o Alekum!

I want to buy a prime lens for my Nikon D3100.

Now i am confused between the 35mm and the 50mm, as both of them are at almost the same price.

I've read quite a few reviews and found out that the 50mm takes sharper pictures and has better build quality. Build quality for me won't matter but i want better results.

I currently have the 18-55mm kit lens with the camera, i can shoot with the kit lens if i want a wider angle for landscapes etc.

I've wanted a prime lens for low light photography as both of them are f1.8 so both will serve the purpose right.

I know it comes down to the use but there's only a 15mm difference between the two, i will be doing portraits and product photography and occasionally street photography.

Keeping in mind that the D3100 is a DX camera with a crop factor of 1.5.

So which one should i get? If you have a better suggestion in the same budget you can suggest that as well.

Thanks.

35mm f1.8 but you wont be getting one its out of stock everywhere.
Availability is not an issue, 35mm is readily available. 50mm will come next week, that's what my source told me.

You suggested 35mm, kindly state the reason as well.

50mm=80mm too close, 35mm= 50mm good focal length for portraits also good for street as it gives wider field of view.

What about the quality of the image, i know about the distance factor but want to know what other differences do they have.
I've read some reviews and most of them prefer the 50mm over the 35mm, because the 50mm produces better bokeh and some other reasons which i don't remember right now. For example this one: Nikon 35mm 1.8 G vs 50mm 1.8 G: Bokeh, Tests | btobey.com
I need to order one tomorrow so need quick replies.

Bro I have used 35mm f1.8 and to me it was perfect in an indoor function i never needed to switch my lens with 35mm just needed to go a bit back, I have used 50mm on my friends 90D and it was PITA to take a group shot as 80mm range is only and only for portraits while 35mm is versatile can be used for street photos/group photos and portraits. But if you only and only need for portraits then 50mm is good lens as I said both are same but with different focal lengths its your decision to choose what you need, but if it was my choice Ill always choose 35mm for Crop cameras.
But mind you both are cheap lenses makes alot of noise while autofocusing but give brilliant results. read the article and attached pic will help you understand focal lengths better. Ohh and I havnt bought ps4 :p

I've been through this conundrum. I'd suggest you to do what I did - use your 18-55 and go a couple of days shooting only at 35 and then the next few days shooting only at 50. Get the focal length which you're more comfortable at. I went for the 35, and so far I have no regrets. And as for the noise, its quieter than my 18-105.

Well i guess i'd go with the 35mm, since its more versatile. 50mm will become a bit too close if paired with a cropped sensor DSLR.

I tried that this morning with my kit lens i think i am more comfortable with the 35mm.

Thanks for the input guys, if it weren't for you guys i might have went for the 50mm and might have regretted it later on

35 is actually slightly sharper than 50, but 50 has better bokeh. Keep in mind that 50 1.8G is compatible with full frame as well and therefore its resale is very good. When I had a cropped body 50 was the best lens for me but a lot of people prefer 35 as it is wider than 50 and you can capture more things in the frame than you can with 50. Availability isn't an issue. Both the lenses are available at Camtronx Nikon.

I don't plan on getting a full frame anytime in the future so i think 35mm is fine for me.
On a cropped sensor DSLR the 50mm would be a lot more closer, it might be good for portraits but will limit the cause of street photography.
All of the reviews and comparisons i've seen between the two lenses mention that the 50mm has the better bokeh and that's what made me create this thread.
But since the 35mm is a lot more versatile, i'd go for that.

Great. If you are ok with using manual lenses, do try the Rokinon/Samyang 35 1.4. Costs 35000 or so. Amazing lens.

Happy to help. Good luck with your purchase!

Also, prepare yourself for the initial pain in the ass that is shooting at high apertures without being able to zoom. I still haven't gotten used to it. :D

It's pretty easy. You will get used to the foot work needed. In conditions like these I don't prefer to use 35mm unless I am sure that my camera won't get snatched. Go paparazzi style. Get a lens with larger focal length later on. Or maybe a good zoom lens but that will set you back 6 figures. This year I got really long prime lens. Only two people have it in Pakistan and I was the first one to get it.
