He needs a sturdy smartphone which can take a beating.

Budget is around ~40-45K

blackberry q10 is just awesome in looks and if he likes physical keyboard then it will be a good choice if not then xperia z or nexus 4 will be best in this budget..

TBH, WP is quite good. My mother had an Xperia Mini (she barely knew how to use that), then she bought the HTC 8S, lemme tell you she loves it! She got used to it quicker than she did to the Xperia. I think Lumia 820 is a great choice.
