NBA - Canon vs Nikon

Im stuck between Canon 550D and Nikon D3100. D3100 is significantly cheaper and within my budget. But I heard Nikon lenses are way more expensive compared to Nikon. And what is an upgrade after D3100?
Also can someone tell me for how much the D3100 is available. Plus a good 50mm lens for it?

No comparison b/w 550D and D3100. 550D wins hands-down. The comparison should be b/w D5100 and a 550D of which D5100 is newer and much better..

Yeah but Im trying to keep my budget low and buy a 50mm lens aswell. Is the D3100 not a good beginner DSLR?

Nikon over canon.. always! Way better color reproduction! Wayyyy Better!

The DSLR IMO would be the Nikon D800E and then Nikon D600 (recent release) but way expensive.

I'd advise you to go for Nikon D7000 (considering it as a bit old so would be cheaper like for 100k with 18-105 VR lens)

If your budget is lower than that then wait for the Nikon D5200 which would be released anytime in December - homeshopping.pk has it for pre-orders!

If you can't even afford that then go for D5100!

To back my claim that Nikon has better color reproduction, go to this link and compare the color quality of different models! SEE IT FOR YOURSELF instead of relying on mere specs!

Try to judge the colors by hovering over the threads and that greenish-toy like thing! Select the cameras in the filter (Canon 7D comes somewhat of a rival to Nikon 7000 though its a semi-pro; even its color reproduction ain't better than that of D7000)

As far as the metering and focusing is concerned, D5200 is better in that perspective!

Go for Canon. Nikon lenses are expensive if you want autofocus. Canon lenses of the same type are generally 50-70% of the price of Nikon's .

You have a budget of around 40-45K I guess. D7000 and D5100 would be out of range.

@ghalibmeer very well said. Its just a misconception that Nikon's (Nikkor) lenses are expensive than Canon's. You can compare them at adorama.com or even ebay.
Moreover, lenses are kind of long-term assets and you hold onto them like forever; body is disposable and therefore you must choose a brand with better color reproduction. Once you have chosen one, you cannot swap easily! Those lenses you'll accumulate over time will determine your next upgrade - not the body!

Do not think about purchasing every lens on your first day, they'll come - eventually! First you'll have to get accustomed with your camera and PLEASE don't just shoot around auto-programs when you are having such a pro equipment at your disposal! I just hate to see so many "burger bachas" roaming around - and showing - their newly bought DSLRs, only to shoot like a noob!

As for the price, Nikon D5100 is getting pretty cheap these days (New one getting around 50-54k) so just wait a few more days till the launch of D5200 and grab yourself a better deal at D5100 (since all those shops would try to flush the old models).
